the worst month i can remember............
colin_ross replied to Gumball's topic in Scottish Scoobies
It's not Sandyhills is it? Heard they're the toughest. The pass/fail ratio is not a myth, if you're at the start of the week its ok but if you're at the end you might have failed before you even sit in the car. If you think about it the more people they fail the safer their jobs are because of all the resits. Just turn up in full cammo gear, face painted the lot and say you'll follow him home afterwards to "discuss" why he failed you. -
Bad It's loud It's gets a lot of attention I end up driving it like a loony Good Points It's loud It's gets a lot of attention I end up driving it like a loony

Or just leave it wide open "man style". Be ready to catch the back end though.[]

Just in case you fail you might want to consider one of these [] -

Dear oh dear Chris, what other shady secrets have you got? Anyone up for a local meet at the test centre or maybe a convoy with the L plated micra at the front? -
Holy sh!t Pete, thats one sweet looking turbo you've got there. I/c doesn't look to shabby either [Y]. Can't wait to see it all up and running. When do the 500+ parts start arriving???
-
That's how I do mine, couple of hours should do it.
-
£17.5k is mega cheap for a 2.5 turbo and the Civic may not be out for months yet, besides, it's not on Gummy's list. I know what I've have.
-
Could be a few things. Do you have a boost gauge and is the boost stable? It's quite common to fry the lamda sensor when the maf goes. Have you done an ecu reset to see if it throws up a cel?
-
All of them will feel dog slow and leave you wanting more sooner or later. If its just for a sensible everyday car I'd go for the ST as its the cheapest as well as the fastest of the lot.
-
They did but I saw my pimp today. Ching ching!

I am working. And no, not the moths, jsut all the loose change in it.
-
Nope, just beat him with my wallet. He never stood a chance. []
-
If you ask nicely I'm sure someone could lend you a 99 cat to get you through the mot. I've got one if you can't find one local.
-
You can just keep it in that case. He won't need it where he's going.
-
Of cousre I knew it was you, no mistaking the tanman. Kudos on your mega burnout away from the lights [] Who did you carjack that from then?
-
Well spotted mate. They guy in the boot was waking up so I had to sort him out!

The vf 28's and 24's are popular upgrades but I wouldn't recommend one without knowing what your goals are with the car and how hard you want to push. TD's are generally tougher but there is a trade off in performance with some. As mentioned if you go for a td05 it will probably need converted to front entry to suit a 99/00 and if doing that you can spec the turbo more to your liking.
-
When the maf fails the car runs lean, dangerously lean. One of the side effects of this is the car runs like a bloody rocket, so much so it melts a piston and bang goes your engine. So, you may well be down on power but you're all the better for it.

Try in an afternoon mate. I had a fun day ay crail and gubbed mine withing the space of 3 hours. It was coated with oil as I hadn't vented my breathers and oil had been drawn up and contaminated it. If you have a 99/00 then you only replace the censor (£78). I had to do this before going mafless so I've got one with 300 miles on it if you need a good one to test it. Or you could just reset the ecu and see if it throws up a cel error.

Good result. As Peter said downpipe will see you crack 300 no problem. Mine was standard apart from a downpipe and fuel pump and made 320 at Dastek.

Slightly O/T - If you have a 2nd car, what is it?

My second car is my Subaru as I hardly ever use it. My main car is a 1.6 focus. Bought it from new and now has 50k on it and will keep it till its scrap. Means it can have the Subau as hardcore as I want as its not my family car and doesn't matter if I take it off the road for a few months to do some upgrades. Also mean I don't have to leave it outside tesco or have wee neds trying it on at every set of traffic lights. There are downsides though. I hate it when I see other cars going for it and I'm in the wrong car, when driving thru a tunnel, when I grab the window wiper instead of the indicator, again, the fact that when I do drive it it feels very scary as I'm not used to driving it etc etc etc -
right im getting brakes for my birthday !!
colin_ross replied to bigdavie's topic in Scottish Scoobies
Tell me about it colin as you shot past me at a braking point during one of last year's run[] Oh yes, totally forgot about that. [:$] Actually that one wasn't down to duff brakes, that was down to the wheels being in the air for the first 20 feet after the hump in the road and dodgy tyres for the next 30 feet of sliding. Actually had time to turn to JohnnyR6 and say "This doesn't look good!" -
PUT OUT FA G Actually do it outside or somewhere well ventilated. sensible to disconnect battery too. Take out back seat - 2 or 3 bolts for bottom squab down where your heels would be if you were sitting in the seat, 2 or 3 bolts at bottom of rear seatback once the bottom half is removed (can't remember exact number of bolts). Seats just lift out - time required 3-4 minutes Remove panel over gap in bulkhead between boot and passenger compartment - 2 minute Remove panel in floor on the right hand side revealing tank with a panel with fuel lines going in and out of it - 2-3 mins Remove pipes & panel in tank and the fuel pump assembly comes with it. Time a few mins It's pretty self evident what to do from there which is just to swap the new pump for the old one with a little bit of fiddling with the electrical connections on the new pump to connect to the existing loom connections. The new pump just clips in place of the existing one so no jiggery pokery apart from you should re-use the existing fuel filter net thing attached to the original pump. Re assemble Don't be surprised at how noisy a bugger the new pump is - you will be able to hear it whirring away pretty clearly. I seem to remember that Ravensblade.com had something with photos on it

Yes twas me, well spotted that man. Was down at Greers getting the mot sorted for another year. Thank goodness they can't fail you for excessive noise as even Bill and the boys said "FFS, that's ridiculous!". Thought their tester was taking th p!ss when he said "so, is this a Subaru?" but it was plain sailing after that. Well, after I replaced a blown headlight bulb, I didn't know as I haven't used the car at night for nearly a year.
