Kenny, I passed my bike test 10 years ago, on the same week my 1st child was born. It was one of those things I'd promised myself to do, and thought that If I didn't do it before kids came along I probably wouldn't do it at all!
Mind you, I've been on trail/Enduro bikes etc since I was about 9yrs old so the test itself was a piece of cake. I did one of those 3 day courses and passed without any faults, so I'd recommend them to anyone with previous biking experience .
The ZX7R was the first bike that I wanted, and subsequently test rode after my test as well. I found it far too aggressive a riding position for everyday use. It puts lots of weight onto your wrists, and whilst some might say that you just need to ride faster to take the weight off them, I'd say as a new rider that the ZX7 wasn't deemed practical by me.
I ended up going for an import GSXR400R, and like Craig McD's VFR400, it wasn't the fastest bike out there but handled impecably and would redline at silly revs so was lots of fun. I did a few track days at Knockers on this, and I'd say that for a bike especially. that's the best thing I ever did. Without lamp posts and brick walls to run wide into, it's the perfect way to hone your counter-steering skills and practice safely whilst getting to know yours and your bike's limits .
I've had a few different bikes over the last 10 years including ZX6R, KTM 525exc, KTM 300exc, Triumph SprintRS & GSXR400RR, and I'm currently thinking about getting something along the lines of a Honda VTR1000 before next spring.
Hope you get yourself sorted out with the bike licence Kenny, you'll love it mate.
