Normally there is a full engine cover and partial gearbox one - if the engine one is missing then the oil filter is exposed to our rather poor weather - if the paint was damaged at fitting, one winter and parked outside will easily see it rust through.

If it doesn't work at all you would find it very difficult to stop without knowing for sure you had a major problem. It could have a leak, which would reduce it's effectiveness. Not particularly expensive - plenty newage cars being broken so you should get a replacement pretty cheaply - fitting would maybe take an hour or so - never done one on the Impreza yet. Yours is definitely working to a degree.

Are engine covers from the underside missing?

The test you carried out of starting with foot on the brake (having pumped the pedal before starting to deplete the vacuum) is a good way to check. If you start the engine and run it, then stop it, wait a minute or so, pump the pedal, it should become very hard in 3 or 4 presses - if it seems hard immediately then you may have a vacuum leak. HTH

I bought mine as I had a longing for one for years and years. It was always a second car but I didn't have any intentions of modding it. Then I started visiting SIDC and the rest is history. Minor mods and remaps to start with and that was great. Then I realised the value of the car was heading South quicker than a BA jet heading for South Africa, and that was when I made a concious decision to make the car exactly what I wanted it to be. I'll never sell it in one piece so I just literally went mental within my budget. As far as future mods go it's reached a peak where it needs thousands spent to lift it to the next level and I can't justify the massive cost for relatively little improvement in performance. Some minor tweaks probably but it's quick enough now to make me grin like a certain cat

This happened to me. They didn't keep the keys as if they are caught with them they are in the poo! I eventually found the keys close to the car.

Glad we are getting somewhere here - I released a good burble by removing the 2nd cat, fitted a straight through centre and a Ninja II silencer when I got my car way back when You're not gonna notice any power increases unless you get downpipe out and remap etc
