problem with paying for a place on a public track day is that you have no control over the other folks paying for a day out. You might find a few hardcore track pros, but also some idiot chavs as well. dig through some of the track day threads on here - TrackMasters do a great job and hire the circuit for exclusive use means they can control who shows up and are much less risk to your car. If you don't want to go right into track day, then how about seeing if Mark & Co can sort a track training day somewhere close to Oxon? you'll get the coaching on techniques, but also acres of tarmac to allow you to push beyond the limits without armco to mash up your pride and joy. cost of a track day can come to a lot more than the entry fee - insurance 50-100 with big excesses / severe brake wear (pads & discs) / tyres (or you get spare wheels and keep your oldies for track thrash) / fuel - very thirsty and need to keep the tank high to avoid starvation problems / extra oil change ..... I've always fancied their Goodwood event each autumn - could be an opportunity for combining skid pan and track day punters on the same day together?

Sorry, no show from us again BRSCC meeting at Sillystone (plus Style and Tuning show on the Stowe complex) Cheers, David & Chrissy

Anyone Up For A Rolling Road Day?
HairyDJ replied to little vodka goblin's topic in South East England
Looks like you did a cracking job Rach - make this your last and you'll have a fantastic 100% reputation Shame we couldn't join you - I'd have loved to have seen that monster wagon, can't match "Bill" to a forum name - whose was it? Even better to see that AndyT is still alive and well (and grafting!) -
I think the main reasons that makers mark and postcode were mandatory was part of the attempt to avoid cloned plates being knocked up cheapskate. In theory, all plates now need to be made up at licensed sites and need sight of your log book. nice idea, but not really that effective at stopping the serious bad guys? It amazes me that so many cars are still running around on "illegal" fonts / layouts - if the powers that be really don't like them, how tough is it to sort them all out in weeks? I suspect the answer might be that they only care when it comes in handy to hit some targets Like the idea of paying in pennies, but I believe there is some limit on how much coin is adjudged to be legal tender in any transaction. Knowing your luck, they'd take ages counting and recounting to delay you until your parking ticket expired and they could get in a bit of revenge

lovely little faded green Austin A35 for 40 quid - lasted a year, but was running bad at the end, 20 odd mpg on 5 star and 200 odd on oil then A40 for £65 - off to halfords for a can of matt black paint for the bonnet & I thought I was the dogs. Retired that for a brand new vauxhall magnum 1800 on an N plate for a massive £1450. god I'm old .........

amazed that the original owner didn't buy it for £500 off his insurers - he must have known that the wreck / parts could have been sold on to the 22b community! suppose we ought to feel sorry for the guy who lost it - awful to lose any car, but something that special ........

I can remember when petrol station glasses used to be free, but in those days I paid less for a gallon that I do now for a litre

problem is not just the cost, it's how miniscule your time behind the wheel can be - 3 hours shared over 12 punters with some of that time given over to briefings and certificate "awards" Years ago, soon after Chrissy passed her test, I booked a half day on the skid pan at Goodwood - basically paid for a corporate session with just the 2 of us - had loads of time at the wheel and got a lot out of it. Prices have gone up & he now seems to run most along those lines. http://www.skidcontrol.co.uk/courses.htm Looking at his 12 person course he gives 3 hours, 2 cars, 2 instrutors and it comes in at less that 50 quid each. Interesting to note that he suggests running these with less than the maximum to get more time each. Sadly, most skid pan "courses" are now more like a corporate fun day than a sound education. The other problem for us 4wd scooby folk is that the cars used on these courses are 2wd and handle very differently. I seem to recall a thread last year where somebody was trying to get a session going where you took your own car onto glazed track with kick-plates and various other high quality handling tests - cost more but gave loads more.

First Oxon Meet Of 2010 - Sunday 7th Feb, Kidlington
HairyDJ replied to stum450n's topic in South East England
a reminder of Iain's poll ( and the results) http://forums.sidc.co.uk/index.php?&sh...e=show&st=0 Given that only 12 people voted, I suppose that implies that any meet / event is only going to be drawn from a small pool? I doubt that it would significantly improve numbers, but is every month more than folk want to do? Don't get too down - SIDC Bucks seems to be a total zero & the early enthusiasm in London also seems to have faded out - makes Oxon seem like a hotbed of activity -
afraid we can't make this year. Chrissy is working lates and I'm working at Sillystone for the FIA GT supercars. For those who haven't made their mind up yet, it's a good event and pretty laid back. We have always managed to get in nice and quickly as well as having a fair sized patch to set up on. Do remember to bring your own chairs and a good coat as airfields are, understandably, exposed areas Cheers, David

congrats folk - and thanks to the existing mob for staying on. A thankless task, but do you need us to start an on-line riot to give you some practice

my 4th winter on toyo snowprox - good in the wet / cold / snow / ice but they won't work miracles at shifting slush not sure what the supply situation is with these as Camskill have them all flagged as no stock until October 2010 - if anywhere else claims to have them, check they are actually on site before you part with cash. Also makes me wonder if any left are old stock? Would probably look to replace mine next winter with the same, although some good comments seem to be out there for the Nokian WR G2. Bring on the heavy stuff - just got myself some of these puppies http://www.snowchains.co.uk/main/quattro.htm

Been getting mine credited to my shell credit card for a while now - quite nice when it also gave me a 3% cash-back on all shell fuel. Sadly it dropped to 1% the other month & today got a letter saying that Shell & Citi are folding the scheme at the end of December. The letter does mention that Shell are coming up with a new reward scheme in the new year - hopefully a good one rather than it being revised to something less useful than the current v-power one? Don't keep looking at your on-line statements though folk - it makes you realise just how much you're spending on fuel

Sorry guys, we're no can do - Chrissy working & me at Rockingham stages for the weekend. But, there's a free pudding deal if you guys come prepared again .... Can't wait till Christmas? As an early Christmas present you and 3 friends can enjoy a free Sundae Best Ice Cream when you all purchase any main meal between now and December 6th! Just print off this email and present the voucher below when ordering. Interestingly, the web page says a pud each without mentioning 3 mates http://www.harvester.co.uk/webnov09.html?u..._campaign=17811 voucher at http://www.harvester.co.uk/site-media/down...e-ice-cream.pdf Cheers, David & Chrissy

Sorry boss, Chrissy has got her next set of hours through and is working 2pm to midnight, so we'll have to give this one a miss. Hopefully we'll manage the next one (once you've decided which is the best). Cheers, David

Event timetable / brochure now published here http://www.bluewater.co.uk/contentimages/g...rogramme_AW.pdf

If we can make whatever date you guys choose, then we'll be there. I notice that 20th Nov is children in need day - not sure if that means our cars will get covered in custard or something nasty
-
We've gone all the way to Maidstone and to Cambridge for SIDC curry nights, so would love to head West for another one if we can make the date you choose Cheers, David & Chrissy

I'll let you know Marshals are signing on about 13:00 and the final safety check runs will be around the 14:45 mark. JB does his thing from 15:00 to 16:15ish. Our payback for volunteering to marshal is supposed to be a private chat session with him at around 17:00. If you're there take the time to say hello if I'm on your part of the track - if not say hi to whichever orange romper-suiter is near you, as we're all such lovely folk Just need to find a shortcut out of Bluewater, as our marshal's meeting at Silverstone that evening is with the lovely Adrian Reynard talking about his rather fast cars - can't be late for that one! Cheers, David

sad news to hear of the damage. When mine had rear end insurance repairs done, i was able to get some other paintwork sorted at a good price while the car was in for the main job - well worth asking?

Don't get too worried about mileage - there was a thread on here a long while back about top mileage with loads of folk way over 100k and still happy. I'm past 91k on the current wagon in just under 5 years. In my experience, it's not mileage that takes a scoob off the road, it's t055ers in golfs trying to drive right through your pride and joy
