Note: for anyone whinging about RWD and no turbo, the BRZ is NOT intended as a replacement for the Impreza.. it's a totally new car for Subaru and more of a replacement for the Toyota Celica, with Subaru's help Edited November 30, 2011 by ScoUK Link to comment

scouk
Subaru UK have now officially announced it: http://subaru.co.uk/news/subaru-brz-makes-world-debut-at-tokyo-motor-show SUBARU BRZ MAKES WORLD DEBUT AT TOKYO MOTOR SHOW Wednesday 30th November 2011 Subaru today unveiled the production version of its highly anticipated BRZ sports coupe. With 200PS and 151lb/ft maximum torque in a car weighing just 1,220kg, the BRZ has been designed for maximum – and accessible - driving enjoyment. The result of a Subaru-led joint-engineering venture with Toyota, the BRZ delivers a sensational and engaging driving experience, thanks in large part to an engineering and development programme that focused on achieving the lowest possible centre of gravity. CONCEPT The Subaru BRZ was designed and developed from the outset to deliver driving fun and exceptional handling, combined with reliability and safety. Carefully conceived powertrain packaging allows the celebrated horizontally-opposed Boxer engine to be positioned lower than ever before. This, in conjunction with its advanced lightweight chassis and use of cutting-edge lightweight materials, endows the BRZ with exceptional handling characteristics. The low-slung, naturally aspirated engine allows for a low and wide stance: 1,300mm tall and 1,775mm wide. However, the 2+2 sports car still offers ample luggage space, ensuring it is adept as a weekend touring companion and as an enthralling daily driver. EXTERIOR STYLING The BRZ’s styling – instantly recognisable as a Subaru – conveys the car’s fun-to-drive attitude. At the front, the low-slung engine facilitates a low, purposeful bonnet line, which in turn accentuates the bulging front wheel arches. Signature design features – such as the six-star badge, distinctive headlights and hexagonal lower grille – give the BRZ a fresh, striking appearance. The clean flanks of the BRZ are punctured by neat air vents either side, pierced by a chrome dart. A visually striking diffuser dominates the lower edge of the BRZ’s tail, with twin exhaust pipes prominently penetrating on each side, representing a final flourish of stylish functionality that conveys the performance intentions of Subaru’s newest model. INTERIOR The interior of the BRZ is designed to ensure that the driver enjoys the behind-the-wheel experience to the full. The steering wheel is deliberately compact to aid rapid inputs and to ensure the driver can fully enjoy the BRZ’s lightning-quick responses. The instrument binnacle features a tachometer with a digitally displayed speedometer at its centre, ensuring that the time required to view vital information is kept to an absolute minimum, and that time concentrating on the road is maximised. The BRZ’s specially designed sports seats feature ergonomically optimised bolsters to hold the driver and passenger securely and comfortably. POWERTRAIN Fully exploiting the best design features of the current-generation Boxer engine, the newly developed 2.0-litre powerplant is exclusive to the BRZ. The joint development programme with Toyota Motor Corporation allowed Toyota’s ‘D-4S’ direct injection and port injection technology to be incorporated into the BRZ’s power unit, improving efficiency. The powerplant achieves a maximum output of 200PS and 151lb/ft torque. The transmission was engineered for exceptional gearshift feel and response. The six-speed manual features a short-stroke gear lever, which is optimized in rigidity, shift accuracy and weight. The six-speed automatic transmission has a ‘Sports’ mode for immediate shift response. Its ‘Manual’ mode allows the driver to use the steering wheel-mounted paddles and features a downshift ‘throttle blipping’ system to ensure the BRZ delivers maximum driver satisfaction. CHASSIS AND BODY BRZ boasts a lightweight yet highly rigid body, developed to maximise the advantages of the car’s low centre of gravity. The rigid and durable chassis structure employs the latest lightweight, high-tensile steel technology, and helps the car’s driving characteristics while also enhancing occupant safety. The aluminium bonnet helps to minimise the BRZ’s weight, while the structure is also designed to maximise pedestrian protection. The front suspension employs struts for optimum rigidity, while a double wishbone layout at the rear provides superb shock absorption and compliance. The 215/45 R17 tyres are mounted on lightweight and highly rigid 17-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels. All BRZ variants are equipped with electronic stability control to ensure that driving pleasure and safety are delivered hand-in-hand. The Subaru BRZ is scheduled to go on sale in the UK in July 2012. BalliSTIc
EXTERIOR STYLINGThe BRZ’s styling – instantly recognisable as a Subaru... Erm... What? I'm sure there's a gag in there about the "Unlike other cars..." tag-line they seem to keep pushing! Symmetrical AWD anyone? Always so easy to criticise... and this from a Hatch owner *chortle* I take it "DI" in the engine specs is Direct injection and not a new guise for the boxer diesel? Link to comment
scouk
No way can they say that the styling is easily recognisable as subaru... It is plainly taken from the same template as mazda's from the last 10 or so years.. Which isn't surprising given subaru has for the most part copied other peoples templates on their cars.. No surprised that when they went to an american to design the hatch it came out like a focus What makes subarus different from the template has often been the scoop and big wing on the back.. the BRZ has neither.. Only external feature being a subaru badge.. However I'm assuming they have tried to keep some sort of burble so you know it's a subaru without actually seeing it.. At the very least I hope they have kept that and not tried to hide it Link to comment
scouk
Ignoring all the pants marketing, I really like the look of it. Same ere' in fact the only thing I can think of that would make it better is a folding roof. But that kills the handling unless it was designed for it.. monsterenergy
I'm nae impressed partly cos I don't like the looks, but it seems tiny too - but think the driver is a giant cos it seems comparable in length to the hatch STi. No AWD is another big negative. If they wanted to build a 2 door coupe, they should have increased power levels to compete with the GT-R... nae made it a tiny wee car and dropped power levels to compete with the 350z! BalliSTIc
Murtaya a viable alternative? Price is gonna be the clincher here methinks... Link to comment
scouk
Year reminds me a lot of the Murtaya styling wise.. I thought that prohject came to a halt a year or so ago but just having a look at the website, kinda suggests it's still on the go  In the meantime £28k for the standad BRZ!!! That sounds like at leat 8k too much IMHO for what is effectively a 2 seater coupe/roadster... Meanwhile there is news that the 300bhp Turbo STi version will also be available.. But for how much! ANd will it be FMIC'd or scoop! goes on sale in the UK towards the end of 2012 with a starting price tag of £28' date='000. A more powerful STI version – previewed by a concept at the Los Angeles Motor Show – will arrive soon after with around 300bhp from a turbocharged boxer engine.[/quote']http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/motorshows/tokyo-motor-show/275809/subaru_brz_revealed.html?DCMP=NLC-Newsletters&utm_campaign=autoexpressvideo_newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_source=newsletter Edited December 2, 2011 by ScoUK Link to comment

monsterenergy
Hmm I just got this car in GT5 on the PS3... looks like it really is a joint partnership with Toyota - wonder what the differences are? Link to comment
scouk
Ermm.. yeah it 100% is joint parnetshiup.. Toyota bought SUbaru few years back and this project has been going ever since.. Subaru is building the car but with Totota putting a coupel tweaks to the engine. AFAIK there are goign to be three standard editions.. Toyota GT86 the Subaru BRZ and Scion FR-S for the US market.. Basicalyl identical cars but with different bumper and wheels. the Subaru version is also rumoured to have a slightly different suspension set-up, but possibly just geometry settings ratehr than different parts.. Also, being Subaru, it's heavily rumoured there will be a Turbo charged STi version.. Still RWD though.. And yep the prices for the standard cars at around the 25k mark is just plain silly! Just about everythign else in that range is much cheaper and theyr coning in new to the market. 15-20k and yeah that would be about right.. But as mentioned above the cost of Japanese stuff is through the roof at the moment, both because of the exchange rate and the after effects of the tsunami on the country.. Subaru Dealers are struggling to get parts at the moment because there such a backlog.. So basically for the meantime we're payign a premium for Japanese stuff at the mo.. Real shame because I really like the BRZ particularly because it's RWD, but it's WAY overprices IMHO. Edited January 7, 2012 by ScoUK Link to comment
t5nyw
25k can get you a E90 M3 or 997 911! Just too much for 200 bhp small coupe £30k for a 400BHP track weapon would be great but dream on Link to comment
t5nyw
The low/mid/top spec now seem to have names Top spec = Type S Mid spec = Type R Low spec = Type RA here is some sales figures from Japan IIRC Subaru sold 3551 BRZ in 2 month which is about 4 times more than Subaru Japan's purposed. Type S = 78.4% Type R = 18.5% Type RA = 3.1% There are two choices of Gearbox 6M/T = 66.3% E-6A/T = 33.7% is . Under 29 (age) is 27.5%, 30-39 is 27.9%, 40-49 is 23.3%, 50-59 is 13.8% and 60 and higher is 7.5%. Tony Link to comment
MattC
New on the STI BRZ, No turbo but 250bhp N/A and less weight. Speedhunters BRZ STI Edited March 31, 2012 by MattC Link to comment
scouk
That coudl work 250bhp should be enough extra oonph to mayke it more playful, no need for a turbo. Turbo woudl just add surge which when teh car is designed to be controllable you get the best by having raw engine power IMHO.. I know not AWD and no turbo! Your thinking WTF! But I REALLY like this concept!, and would love to have one!.. Or at least get a shotty Edited March 31, 2012 by ScoUK Link to comment
