  1. Well folks, completed my first outing on track yesterday at Ingliston at a sprint event setup by the Lotus Elise club... Been wanting to get out on track for a while but wasn't keen on going on KH or something due to pressure of other cars so the "one on" at a time setup of a sprint appealed! Circuit was full of short-ish straights and 90 degree bends, apart from one section which included 2 hairpins and a straight that you could be somewhere around 80-90 on... Couple of sighting laps followed by a few untimed runs then down to the proper stuff! My first run of the day turned out to be the hairiest, launched, slowed for first corner booted it in first and bounced off the limiter (d'oh!)... didn't quite realise how quick 1st went when driving that hard! Then i came to the first hairpin and it was down to 1st gear speed, came off the bend floored 1st as straightening up and ended up with all 4 wheels spinning and going sideways! Somehow regained control and off we went.... On my 2nd lap i started having some technical difficulties, car was shutting down completely (i.e. reset stereo / clock!) and alarm going off mid run, not fun when approaching a corner pretty quick and you then lose proper breaks / power steering. Fault appeared to be that my IC pipework was arcing againt my batt so taped up and away we go. 3 great runs, car flying and got my times from 1:18's to 1:16's then a nice 1:13 as i really started to watch lines, braking points.... unfortunately after lunch on my first run the elec issue came back so i called it a day for my runs... car is in for MOT and check on Thurs anyway, i'm fairly confident its an earthing / loose wire issue as the car runs 100% fine normally, only when really driven hard it goes and there was a mention of sparks at one point!! All in all it was a great day tho, got a pax lap in an evo that set the fastest time of the day (1:05) and it really set me up for more track days, hopefully next time round i'll not have any issues with car... Apologies for monster post but still beaming a little from the sideways fun! p.s - does everyone leave their ABS on normally when on track... found it a little annoying when really hammering the brakes / hitting bumps when braking.... Here is a link to a wee piccy as well, can't post it as i'm in work and can't get it on to my photobucket.. http://www.alcester-racing-sevens.com/Ingl...9096_large.html Cheers, Chris
  2. Cheers guys, don't think i'll be likely to go to fast although we shall see what happens when the adrenaline kicks in!! I've watched some of the vids and it looks quite tight and technical so don't imagine silly speeds! Apparently there is one straight that you can get some pace on..... I'll report back (hopefully, lol)
  3. Guys, Got my first ever venture on track this Sunday, small sprint event with about 20 cars from the Scottish Elises club... Any tips for the prep... planning to check all fluids and tyre pressures, thats about it really.... Any tips for the driving? Its one car at a time on quite a tight little circuit so no pressure from people waiting to overtake or anything.... Cheers. Chris
  4. 2.1 bar at low boost.... what is high boost gonna be?? Crazy stuff DCI.. !
  5. I think the new Impreza is like fungus... it grows on you..........
  6. Looking superb Gus... makes me want one!
  7. As with a couple of others i can't add much help but hope you get it sorted ASAP mate. Did i pass you on victoria road one day last week, i was in grey classic STi (looks like RB5) going in the opposite direction? Would have been about 5ish i think....
  8. Similar to you have said i don't have the best understanding of the mechanical goings on inside the gearbox but it doesn't sound the same to me.... I could always select 5th easily but as soon as i engaged the throttle (gently) i could see the movement... then generally within 2/3 times of gently cruising on and off throttle it would just slip out, never crunching or anything but just slipping back to neutral....
  9. Stephen, The 5th gear retaining nut issue was very common on MY99... my STi5 had this issue and the symptoms were that it would slip out of 5th particularly when the car was warm. It was quite obvious though as if i was in 5th and gently accelerated then lifted off i could clearly see about 2 inches of travel on the gearstick. Also used to have to double clutch regularly for reverse and sometimes after reversing it was really difficult to get back to neutral. It is apparently possible to fix this issue with the box on the car (for a MY99 anyway) as the rear cover on the box comes off and allows access, in the end though i put mine in for a full rebuild as i was concerned that due to the age / mileage there may be some other gremlins in there. Maybe not much help but as i say it was very obvious that 5th gear was moving in my car due to the gearstick... HTH Chris
  10. Nice one Grant, great compilation...
  11. RIP Colin, Johnny, Ben and Graeme. Like many others Colin is one of the main reasons i originally took an interest in Subaru... very sad day..
  12. Shockingly sad news... as with everyone else thoughts are with the families of those involved... Gutted...
  13. Superb result, huge torque figure that!
  14. Guys, Was checking pipework to my DV and found a bit of a botch job on one of the pipes, got a small pipe sitting inside a large pipe with only a jubilee clip holding them together... As such i need a hose that connects my FMIC pipework to my HKS SSQV... the FMIC hole is 40mm and my DV is 20mm... any suggestoins, really can't seem to find any reducing elbow of this size or close... can either go from 48 - 30 or 38 - 25... i'm thinking going smaller than the 40, even 2 mm ain't gonna work, but on the other hand will a decent hose clamp pull a pipe in by 10mm?? Any advice appreciated!! Cheers Chris
  15. Guys, Couple of questions on changing my HKS SSQV back to a standard re-circ valve.. the car has an FMIC and i'm slightly thrown by the whole setup.... 1 - Does any one have a pic of a std STi5 DV or can someone tell me whether the bottom or side hole is the input, a pic would be great! (dumb q i know!) 2 -The 2 holes on the DV seem to be 40mm, the hole on the FMIC pipework is 40mm so thats fine, however, the hole that is currently blanked off (the re-circ going back in hole) seems to be 30mm... any idea's how this connects up, do i need a reducer of some sort? TIA Chris
