  2. So at a rough guess you've got a 3k rpm fun zone. The car that gearbox was intended for will make decent power from 3k to 8k so has almost twice the revs to play with meaning it could hold the gear for almost twice as long and be going a third faster when it shifts up. A gearbox is one of the most expensive things you can do to a car (as if you didn't know) so think about where the car might end up spec wise and do yourself a favour by just buying it once.
  3. Yes, thats what I mean. Where does your engine start make and decent power/torque and when does it run out of puff? Running a larger engine with a smaller turbo will cause it to run out of steam sooner so think about where the power dies off not where the red line is. With less revs to play with you'll be swapping gears much more often and spending as much time in neutral as you do on the gas. I know that reliability is your main concern and in that respect any 6'er is a good move but think about drivablity and what you'll be using it for and buy the one that suit your needs best.
  4. Stephen is correct John. The power and torque curve of your car will not change but if you fit a gearbox with shorter gears you will be changing up sooner and you will be running out of revs quicker. On a high revving car this is less of an issue but on a lower revving car such as a 2.5 you'll find yourself changing gear much more often. Let me put it this way, when Andy F changed from a 2.0 to a 2.5 in his spec c he itched the 6 speeder and fitted a 5 speed ppg. It just suits the engine better.
  5. Also you need to consider the effect of mating s relatively short revving engine with a gearbox that was intended for a high revving one. Subaru lengthened the ratio's when they went to the 2.5 to make it a better match. Would you be happy with the results of mating the two?
  6. Thats what most people do, I ddi anyway. If funds allow defi are the weapon of choice, failing that any gauge as long as it is accurate is better than none.
  7. My first stops would be 1. spark plugs - ngk 7's from Lateral 2. uprated clutch and flywheel - exedy from Lateral 3. oil catch can - ebay, cheap and cheerful 4. heat wrap and ties for downpipe etc - Lateral 5. oil pressure, oil temp and boost gauges - I got most of mine from ebay but check out the group buys on the MLR for defi's as rc developemts were doing good prices. They did d!ck me about a lot though but would have been much more expensive elsewhere. If it's not defi's check out Xyber autos 6. ported headers - Harvey did mine bu if you're going for after market ones Lateral again for the gt spec II's 7.rear anti roll bar - Geo a.k.a. cusco kid 8. pod for gauges (carbon fibre possibly) - JW racing 9. lowering springs - eh, dunno about this one As I said these would be my first stops, by all means shop around and don't be afraid to play one place off another especially if you're buying a few things. If you're thinking about buying abroad remember vat and import duty may bump up the prices.
  8. I think I see what you're getting at. You want my spare fork so you can bend two of them at diffeerent angles and see what works best?
  9. But how will bending the fork give you a longer throw? It'll relieve the pressure on the piston all right but if the pivot and points of contact remain the same so will the throw.
  10. This might sound like a silly question so bear with me. You cut the slave piston to a shorter length so it's not as tight against the fork which sounds reasonable but this will not have altered the throw of the piston. If the fork isn't being pushed far enough as it now sounds how will bending the fork give you a longer throw? You'd be looking to alter the pivot point (impossible) or the point where the piston meets the fork would you not? Will have a think to see if I can come up with anything quick and easy if I've got all of that right.
  11. Spare 5 speed fork at my place if you need one to butcher.
  12. I'll see that challenge and raise you. 2 for one deal?
  13. D'oh! Blonde moment. Yes, they're floaty light, especially for the long stud versions. Can't remember where I got them, it all seems so long ago.
  14. You're timing sucks mate, I've just given a black alloy set away. There's a group buy going on scoobynet just now for the rays ones, any colour you like. Bloody tempted myself.
  15. Crackin looking car mate, I remember commenting on it at Knockhill.
  16. Good point. So why have one at all for a road car? Out of interest what does he tow it with, his road road car? If Grant, or anyone for that matter, has to trailer a car to any event it has ceased to be a true road car. The raod is the bit between your house and the event after all. I fully appreciate the work, time and money that goes into creating a fine piece of machinery like the ones at AWD but lets call a spade a spade and be done with it.
  17. Not wanting to go off on one but this is a perfect illustration of my point. It sounds very much like you have a road legal race car rather than a road legal road car. If it's a road car why not drive it there and back? Sure you might brake something, just like the rest of us. We'll have to PAY to get it home too. That's my point. I don't think I'm taking things too seriously either. I'll turn up and have some fun but won't be moaning if I get beaten by any road or race cars. I couldn't care less who or what I'm running against as I'm only racing the clock. Should be a good day out.
  18. As above. They're famous(infamous) for it on the phase 2 boxes. Only parts you'll need to fix it is a new locking nut , labour is whats gonna cost on this one.
  19. Meant to say Jim, I take it you ran the clutch in? I was warned when I bought my twin that it would need run in before any real torque could be put through it. Something in the order of 500 pull aways or 300 2nd gear pull aways was mentioned.
  20. Triple plate??? That does it, I'm ordering a quad
  21. Hopefully the SIDC snappers can get a few pics of that one. Would your tyres last long enough to get their and back with your geo settings?
  22. Driving it to and hopefully home from the event is a good start if you want to place yourself in the road car category.
  23. I've seen some nice cars there but I've also seen a few dogs. If you know what you're looking for you should be fine, check for signs of high mileage especially. Prices are a bit on the high side but healthy discounts avaliable for cash if you ask.
