This scenario sounds very familer TVR drivers speeding up to close the gap you were safely aiming for then getting the humph and posting on thier forum that we were driving like nutters and we made one of them spill tea on thier slippers after our noisy exhausts made thier hearing aids go all funny. Although we did have a Green Wagon on that run that would have been in a group of his own that day, his group would have been called "I feel like dieing today". The Green Wagon never came on another run after he was severly told off for crossing the line between fun and one way ticket to the front page of the Daily Record Were the people complaining on Pistonheads killed, injured or maimed on this last run? Any cars ran off the road and exploded in a fireball that XL-5 would have been proud of? Did anyone in a Subaru open fire on innocent civilians as they passed through Aboyne? Well no harm done and no one hurt so whats the problem. Personally i think these kind of people are just jealous of our marvelous cars and when we do things they deem to be a bit lairy but in actual fact are really safe manouvers. They get all shirty and start ranting that we are the scum of the earth and should be neutered at birth when reallty deep inside they are wishing they had owned an Impreza and could join in the fun. Instead of being stuck in their mid life crisis mobile rueing the night the condom broke Peace to all concerned and good night

If you dont know the answer to that one, sell the STI for a 1.5 with a STI bodykit Next run we will call the groups 1 2 3 4 This should hopefully save any misinterpretation of a single word or phrase At least when the groups were named you have an idea of what kind of pace you are letting yourself in for. If you want a risk free day then join the "Slow" group or stay at home and miss some great roads, scenery and banter.

The term "Lunatics" is just a phrase. I know it may imply that the group overtake at 175mph in a 30mph but i can assure you it is just a word. The term "Lunatic", i think the actual term used was "Mentally Unhinged" was dropped and the term "Spirited" was introduced as a more appropriate alternative to the previous name for the lead group

In the real world it does not happen, in an ideal world yes by all means i would prefer to doddle about Bob Marley style and enjoy the scenery but as Dunc says There will always be people that want to go quicker than others so we need to address the problem by acknowledging it and dealing with the problem the best way possible. After 7 runs over 4 years and various ideas i have found this is the best solution. Next run i could pay AndyF to restrict all our cars electronically and out of 50 cars that turned up about 2 would turn up for next run.

Agreed mate but Perth is nigh on 100 miles from my front door. The idea of using Perth as a starting point is its about as central as can be and is equidistant from all areas, thus not favouring one area as a starting point. The first Highland Run we done i covered about 550 miles, on rock hard HKS coilovers, from door to door and included Lossiemouth as a Shell refuelling point You really dont have to do the full run, many people bug out at the closest point to home which is fair enough. The days are desigened as social days and are to be used to get to know the people behind the keyboards and have a good laugh. Meeting points are a good idea but sometimes can be tricky to pull off due to pee stops and ice cream stops and oh #### we are lost stops. Next run, maybe Highland way depending on repsonse from Northern club members, is either April or May next year and there is a monster weekend run next Aug to Oxfordshire, this Aug run will be guarenteed to be Scoobyiain friendly as its all motorway and will be under 60mph in one massssssssssive convoy.

The explanation is in the bit you deleted. Nutters that get out the car park last pull some shady manouvers just to get to the front of the group, solve the problem by putting all the people into groups they feel comfortable in Of course i am going to say to the leader of the first group now keep it under 60 and no overtaking but wether that group leader listens to me or not is another story but i can assure you the general group safety is the group leaders responsablity. After organising 7 runs over 4 years and no serious accidents or incidents and covering an average of 250 miles per run i think the groups is the better solution to letting people leave point A willy and indeed nilly.

Every time i organise one for the Highlands the turn out from the Northern lads is usually quite poor. Here is the video of the last Highland run the Iain was referring to Click here to watch Small-Highland-Fling Nothing too wild there boss

Quick explanation of the thinking behind splitting up the groups 50 odd cars leaving a single location in one go does not work. People with no fear take risks to get up the front of the convoy. The first runs followed this principle but after run 2 this was abandoned in favour of the groups with nominated group leaders. These group leaders knew the various etiquette to be followed like no overtaking in stupid places and the approach to villages. The 4 groups allow people to join whatever group they feel happy with that groups pace. If the group you are in is going too fast then pull over or wait until the next stop and join the group behind you. Subsequently if the group you are in is going too slow then wait until the next stop and join the next quicker group. A simple but effective solution that works for everyone that has attended our runs Mental.......people with no fear and like to push the limits Fast..........people with fear and know the limits Medium.....people that think the fast group have no fear and are pushing the limits Slow ........people that like to doddle and look at the scenery In a perfect Ernest Hemingway world we would all leave in one group, obey every single Road Traffic created and never overtake any vehicle that may be in our way but unfortunatly this is the real world and men will be kids when behind the wheel of a AWD Impreza on a country road. As Jeremy Clarkson once said, "the best driving roads in the world.......Scotland"
