Another way of looking at it John... The VW Fox - Buit in BRAZIL - Using a workforce thats half German - in a state of the art facility (that Volkswagen built...) the cars are then all sent to GERMANY for QA, before being Shipped to the UK for sale.... And stilll cheaper than building in Germany or the UK... thats a God bit of mileage that your shiney new car has on it before you ever think about buying it...

They are different cars john... You never got Type-R or type-RA in this country... also the cars are so much cheaper in the other countries that really it is MUCH cheaper to import them than to buy them here.... the import market has always been big in this country, both in cars and especially motorbikes.... although I dont think that its as big now as it used to be...

But then, by hitting older cars like this you really are punishing people that cant afford newer cars.... EVERYTHING is more expensive and the tax is just strangling... on top of the credit crunch, nearly half the population (ok I made that figure up) are in danger of loosing their homes already because of the state of the country's finances... waaaaay too expensive, need servicing waaaaaay too often, As you say Styling is more weak than 7 days... The new STi, I believe according to one video that was doing the rounds a while ago, The evos were getting trounced buy the scoobies on the track... using top class jap race drivers...
