StewartyBoy Posted February 14, 2010 Posted February 14, 2010 (edited) You could argue all day long that Japan were given the better models, but it's not just Subaru. Look at Honda and it's Type R. Arguably the best engine manufacturers in the world, and the first Type R to properly break cover was the bloody Accord!?! Yes we had the Integra, but we waited long enough for the R. Twin Turbo Supra? Pulsar GTR? Skyline GTR? The fact is we HAVE WRX's, P1's, UK300'S, STi's. Spare a thought for those who have no sense and still drive Evo's. Every Turbo and Non Turbo UK or JDM car is obtainable. Who cares if it was'nt sitting in our UK Dealership's, its not as if we can't get hold of them if we want one. Ive been working in a Lapdancers all night, and the thought of STi Cosworth being stuck on a bootlid has made me more sexually aroused than the 12 strippers I've been watching all night. The ones saying YAWN out there are the true petrolheads. The ones who know that there are greater thrills out there to be had. They are also the ones who have highly modified cars... Whose not to say that maybe, just maybe, the Cosworth will finally become OUR great base model to start with. The one that fly's our UK flag. I drive a Saab so I'm better than you all. Sorry did I say Saab, I meant Vectra. No sorry, Spyker. Now where's my driving gloves... Edited February 14, 2010 by StewartyBoy
cullenmin Posted February 14, 2010 Posted February 14, 2010 It all sounds very interesting cosworth working with subaru, can only be a good thing for a new model to come out but... should it not be called a "Subaru Impreza WRX Cosworth" coz I bet all the STi bits will be changed for cosworth bits. It has the potential to be a whole new model, top end of the impreza range. Rich
StrikE Posted February 14, 2010 Posted February 14, 2010 Well i can imagine a few people waking up with sore heads this morning Subaru Cosworth i would imagine it would be called going by past marks!

scoobykev Posted February 14, 2010 Posted February 14, 2010 I've had a UK and a JDM car. In standard spec they were nothing alike to drive. In what way? is it just they are faster? Just curious, only ever driven my uk turbo and a P1.
Big 'D' Posted February 14, 2010 Posted February 14, 2010 In what way? is it just they are faster?Just curious, only ever driven my uk turbo and a P1. From what I have driven between the UK and the JDM I find the JDM a much tighter car all over, the steering, gearchange, handling and performance/power delivery are defo better. IMHO it just seems that the JDM cars are put together with better tolerances/parts. Cheers Iain
DR Motosport Posted February 14, 2010 Posted February 14, 2010 Great thread this, but just catching up on it tonight. It starts off about the Impreza Cosworth, then moves totally off topic and onto a UK V's JDM thread. So it'll stay that way. I bought my first Impreza Turbo new from Anderson Cars in Perth back in 1997. I'm sure Gav had his earlier, but I bought mine at the same time as Grant (AWD) bought his Catalunya. But in 1997 there just wasn't a choice. I can't remember anyone having an Import Impreza then. It was really into 1998 that the STi4's started to arrive, then after that the early secondhand WRX's started to appear. Come 2002 when the Bug-eye STi arrived in the UK, I had all but placed an order for one with Stan Palmer in Carlisle. £26k for the 265bhp STi or £28k for the 265bhp STi with Prodrive styling. £2000 added the PPP for 305bhp to each. Palmers had a 10 week delivery wait. But I then went to McKays in Edinburgh and drove a secondhand silver JDM STi they had for sale. The difference in power was night and day, and I just loved the closer JDM 6 speed gearbox. I then decided to Import a new WR Blue STi direct from Japan myself (well with a little help). Total cost including the SVA and Thatcham alarm was just a tad under £21000 with a 12 week delivery. But what suprised me most, was what was removed from the UK spec cars. NO HID's, rear wiper, folding mirrors, titanium strut brace, tints, stronger fully forged engine (compared to the hypereutectic UK one), etc. And not forgetting a missing 50bhp. But it was probably the £7000 saving that clinched it. Nowadays it's not so clear cut for UK or JDM on a New car. The exchange rate isn't anything like as good. You could argue forever on the revvy 2.0 JDM engine or the Torquey 2.5. But for me, the Cosworth will have to be really something very special to get me past the "Hatch" idea. I just don't like it. But what really pi55es me off is that I went to the Geneva Motor Show last year, and the Subaru stand was crap. This year I don't go, and they launch the Cosworth. Davy

Davy Davy Grant's(AWD) second impreza R1WRX,can remember it well.Woosh as it was known back then, and its still alive to this day.I can also remember your DBM turbo, pretty rare in that colour aswell.Bought mine late 95,96MY.Grant was doing the gold badging for the rear back then long before AWD. colin_ross Posted February 15, 2010 Posted February 15, 2010 In what way? is it just they are faster?Just curious, only ever driven my uk turbo and a P1. And did they feel different? Yes my jdm is faster, 208 compared to 280 bhp would see to that alright but there's more too it. Shorter gearing, dccd, quicker steering, roller bearing turbo, better cams, fatter drivetrain, plated diffs more agressive mapping all make for a different drive. My uk was a great car and felt pretty fast, it certainly showed up a few exotica in its time. My standard jdm would p*** all over it but I'd have to work harder at getting the best out of it.

Ovv Posted February 15, 2010 Author Posted February 15, 2010 munters lol, not heard that saying for a while... Back to topic...
scoobykev Posted February 15, 2010 Posted February 15, 2010 And did they feel different? Yup. Biggest difference being where the power comes in and lasts due to the different turbos. The suspension is a bit stiffer and short shift gearing. The thing is i've now got that P1 turbo fitted to mine along with some sti6 typeR v limited suspension, so in summary UK all the way Hindsight being the great thing that it is, i'd probably have bought an import, would've saved me puting a load of jap bits on mine, but when i bought it, it cost me £12.5k and i wanted a dealer warranty at that time thought all imports were dodgy (why would anybody buy an import when you can get exactly the same car in the uk, hindsight again ) In fairness though, surely with regards to classics, you could only compare a uk turbo with a jdm wrx and not an sti. Or a P1 to a typeR.
badbaz Posted February 15, 2010 Posted February 15, 2010 I've got an STi with a Cosworth timing belt already!
jcscoob Posted February 15, 2010 Posted February 15, 2010 (edited) you could only compare a uk turbo with a jdm wrx and not an sti. Or a P1 to a typeR. Or a green UK2000 to any JDM at the time (only andyf's car beat me) But saying that if was to buy another impreza now it would only be a JDM Edited February 15, 2010 by Jcscoob

No really, when I bought my UK in 97 it was the highest spec available in the UK and had 208 bhp.. If I was in Japan I could have bought an sti which sort of makes my original point about them being higher spec. If you want to compare a type r with a P1 then thats another story. But it ends the same way.
