midshipracer Posted April 25, 2009 Posted April 25, 2009 (edited) I was a bit confused being new to the scobbie scene.I wasnt sure what scottish scoobies was as this is realy sidc. The guy PM'd me and told me to join scottishscoobies.net but I had a look at the site and havent yet signed up. If anyone is bothered about him using scottish scoobies name then sidc:scottish scoobies should have bought the domain name just encase. There is nothing legaly wrong with him calling the website scottishscoobies.net. Yeah I've been doing that too.. Got stung a few years back for having a .co.uk name.. Based the site around the .co.uk but wanted the .com to caputre more visitors who assumed .com.. It was registered to someone else but not used.. Contacted the owner to arrange a deal.. No reply.. 2 week later they turned it inot a porn site I've made damn sure I've got all the main ScoUK.<whatever> Domains Although come to think of it I shouldn't really comment on stealing domains.. I own PSWRT.com But havent done anything with it.. Edited April 26, 2009 by ScoUK

RA Dunk Posted April 26, 2009 Author Posted April 26, 2009 I think people just like to play god, hence setting up their own forums. "This is my forum, respect my authority" Anyone can set up a forum... agree, if people want there own club then good on them, but at least be original enough to come up with your own club name and not steal another especially one like this that has done so much for charity
Connor_scotland Posted April 27, 2009 Posted April 27, 2009 (edited) Lets get a few things straight here I bought the domain name as it was still for sale. I only realised a few days after buying it that you lot owned the .co.uk one as i always assumed it was just sidc. If you were concerned about it you should of bought it to be honest. I know i post on here aswell and will continue to do so. The site is not going to rival this site at all. I just fancied starting my own online community about something i am passionate about. Its only the internet so i wouldnt start getting worked up about it. As you lads all know this site is VERY well established and i cant see my site getting this big i just wanted to run a site which was specific to Scottish Scoobie owners. I have not problem with site or i dont think its ****e i just started my own because i wanted to. Edit---- Also to add i think people are getting a bit over the top about this as im not planning starting my own clothing line or that. Its an internet forum.................. If people wish to get smart please do so in person to me as i can't be bothered arguing with you on the internet. It may make you feel "the big guy" but in reality makes you look like a ballbag. If you don't like what i have done thats fine but im not going anywhere (unless someone deletes my account) which i hope doesnt happen as i speak to alot of people on here and will be coming to your meets still. I was not trying to to undercut this site as i said i purchased the name and realised later on that this had the domains Also i didnt need to come on here to give my side of the story as i have nothing i need to explain but a member on here send me an email to advise about the thread - Cheers mate I wasnt poaching members from here either it was mainly folk i was friends with but then again im sure it was done on Scoobynet before... I dont want this to turn into a huge debate as there isnt much more to be said on it. Also my site is "down" as its getting swapped servers at the moment as my mate was hosting it but we hit bandwith pretty quick Edited April 27, 2009 by Connor_scotland

I just fancied starting my own online community about something i am passionate about. Hi Connor, I don't have any sort of problem with puchasing the domain.. Afterall, like you say it was available.. the ScottishScoobies.co.uk domain is owned by the SIDC and is purely redirected to the scottish area of the SIDC forums. Also the name ScottishScoobies.co.uk and the logos are also owned by the SIDC. My only personal concern was that ScottishScoobies.net is being promoted as "Scottish Scoobies" rather than "Scottish Scoobies.net" I know it's sounds petty.. My concern is more that it can cause confusion if both sites are being promoted as "Scottish Scoobies". As I mentioned in a previous post, I'd welcome more online Scooby Communities and hopefully you'll get your site up and running again soon! Good Luck with it!
phil Posted April 27, 2009 Posted April 27, 2009 Guys "We" own the .co.uk & .com versions If anybody is being approached with unsolicited PM's please forward them to me and the sender will be banned as I was advised by Connor that this would not be the case I guess imitation is the greatest form of flattery Phil
Connor_scotland Posted April 27, 2009 Posted April 27, 2009 Cheers Phil Yea i see what you mean ScoUK i will amend this when the DNS servers update as we have no access to it at the mo :-) I will promote my site as scottishscoobies.net Cheers
phil Posted April 27, 2009 Posted April 27, 2009 I have removed personal details from a post at the request of Connor, I appreciate these details are readily available via "Whois" but the requested was politly made and I have complied
thewelsho Posted April 27, 2009 Posted April 27, 2009 Cheers Phil Yea i see what you mean ScoUK i will amend this when the DNS servers update as we have no access to it at the mo :-) I will promote my site as scottishscoobies.net Cheers Well that clears all that up and good on you for coming on and explaining your side of the argument. What isn't cleared up though is the undoubted confusion this will cause in the future. Let's face it, we don't refer to organisations by the full "Sunday name” with the dot-whatever at the end, we shorten things to make them punchy and user-friendly. So ScottishScoobies.net or .co.uk will inevitably become synonymous in the eye of the ordinary user. Wouldn’t it make sense to drop the name and register something else along similar lines. I understand that following through on the above suggestion will likely cause money if you have purchased a hosting package, so it might not be workable. However, if you simply purchased the name on its own, then it wouldn’t have cost you that much. Just a suggestion, as I can’t be bothered telling Subaru owners/future members that: “I post on Scottish Scoobies, that’s Scottish Scobbies DOT co DOT uk, there is another site blah blah blah...” See? Anyhoo, just to reiterate, nice of you to come and explain your position.
phil Posted April 27, 2009 Posted April 27, 2009 Its a good point If you are willing to do a name change we will happily purchase the domain name from you
Connor_scotland Posted April 27, 2009 Posted April 27, 2009 (edited) Yes you have made an excellent point - One of which i had not thought of at all mate - Thanks I know i could of come on here and been very negative about the whole thing but what would the point in that be. I have done nothing wrong so figured i would just explain my side even though i didnt need to. I have been on this site for a good while now and will continue to do so. Im just glad others didnt follow suit with the other pish comments some other folk made. Thanks Connor Edited April 27, 2009 by Connor_scotland
RA Dunk Posted April 27, 2009 Author Posted April 27, 2009 again i have no problem with you having a club/forum the more the merrier TBH, the only thing that concerned me was the closeness on the clubs names and people maybe looking for here ending up there (.net) and vice versa, hope you get this sorted and get your own place back up and running again
