Assuming that your water level is ok in the coolant system, it sounds like either a restriction in the heater matrix pipework (from the block into the matrix) or your water pump is struggling to pump the water round your coolant system. I would recommend that you get your water pump checked out to be on the safe side. Cheers Iain

No it will not have any effect on the map only the fault (volatile) memory, did you say the car was running now though or have I missed a post, I really dont mean to be so nosey but I am always interested in faults and how they are resolved. Cheers Iain

The only reason I ask this mate is that by removing the battery you have mabe reset the ECU (I say mabe because I am not familiar with Simtek) and cleared any fault codes you had and that is why the car now starts not because you have changed the plugs if you get my meaning. Cheers Iain

Did you get new valves fitted with the new tyres? It would be worth checking the valves too mate, just get some slightly soapy water and splash it about the valves, you could do the whole wheel/tyre rim too if you felt like it, any leak will obviously show as bubbles Cheers Iain

I am pretty sure out of the early IHI VF range turbos the VF35 is the fastest spooling within the range, not to make your choice any harder, like I said earlier my one has a p15 turbine housing and has zero lag even paired with a frontmount. Cheers Iain

I think that for those who find the Impreza's handling in the snow not quite up to spec should go out an buy one of these purpose built tundra buggys. From my point of view the Impreza is by far one of the most capable cars in the snow ever, I love it Cheers Iain

ABS is not in any way there to make you braking any better than what it would be without it (on a low friction surface ie snow/ice), it is designed to allow you to maintain some control of the positioning of the car whilst braking on a low friction surface. But you already know this by your following statement. The word skid means that friction between the wheels and the road has been lost not gained, a skid no matter how big or small is a loss of friction not a gain, the rolling resistance of your wheels against fresh snow for example is probably greater than the coefficient of friction between your wheels and the road whilst skidding, without ABS you do not get added braking you get added skidding, also skidding under braking on snow is by no means controlled as you have lost grip. Hence that is why ABS helps you have some control of the positioning of the car whilst under braking on a slippy surface. Regardless of having ABS or not, braking in snow and icy conditions should be a last resort because basically they do not work. Cheers Iain

Hi guys Just drove back from Witney to Carterton (7 miles) in the snow, I left Witney with no lying snow and arrived in Carterton to between 1 + 2 inches on snow which has fallen onto wet roads, please be very, very careful if out and about as the snow is packing into ice on the wet unsalted roads and is very, very slippy. Hi mate, sorry for the delay in reply, chances are the black single pin and green double pin connectors have been tucked up into the wiring loom under the dash on the drivers side, if you have a careful look you will find them they are defo there mate. When you find them connect just the black singe pin ones together and turn the ignition on and count the 'check engine light' flashes slow = x10 and fast = x1 so eg 2 slow and 3 fast = 23 and so on. Multiple codes will have a slight pause between codes. Hope this helps and I hope you find the wires as it could save you a lot of time and hastle if the ecu can point you in the right direction. Mabe a good selection of winter tyres would help the braking in the snow, it would be interesting to see how a scoob with ABS would fare compared to a scoob without ABS in the snow, there has always been the agrument that you can stop the car quicker than what the ABS can, I have seen first hand that this can be done by performing cadence braking even on an ABS equipped car for better braking results (but this was in wet + dry tests not snow). Granted the amount of pressure you have to apply to the brakes in the snow to get the ABS to sring to life is minimal but would you rather the ABS kicked in or lock up more than 1 wheel and lose control of the car? I have no faith in any brakes in the snow ABS or not but I do think a good set of snow tyres would make a huge difference. Out of all the cars I have driven in the snow the Imprezas and the Forester I have had are by far the safest I have driven. Cheers Iain

When driving in the snow I try to drive as if I had no brakes, it is crazy how long your stopping distance is in the snow if you use your brakes as normal, you can acutally stop quicker using the gears like you say but for this to be effective you have to be driving to the conditions of the road in the first place then lightly use the brakes at the end of your stop. The abs only kicks in because wheel slip has been detected (a good indication that the surface that you are driving on is very slippy and that you would not stop any quicker if it worked any later), during normal driving in the dry summer months etc you will (should) very rarely ever feel the abs at work (if you felt it work during these conditions I would be concerned of its operation).
