All i can say(as your discription confuses me a tad), is you should have lined the pulleys up with the marks on the new belt(also, marked the line markers on the old belt too, to compare to the new one).
By turning the engine no matter how many turns of the crank, they should always become lined up.
Did you count the amount of teeth on the new belt and compared to the old one?
I'm wondering what exactly was the problem with the car....possibly showing there's a problem with the pulleys?
