somebody get this man a priest! he's speaking in tongues!! .. right. so its good news? :riddled with confusion: is it a "Phase 2" box i've got then? How do you tell from the code? are you saying I can safely have this one rebuilt?
-
i like how you cant say gear-set but you can say dicks. hehe. thanks mate for your post, this was kinda what I was thinking too, but there are reports of people running 380/380 or whatever thorugh a standard box in almost equal measure to reports of people saying they've stripped. I was almost entertaining the idea and expense of the 6 speed, but seems like so many uncertainties in getting parts and them being compatible that i'd prefer a simpler route IF there's enough people who say that 310 will be fine with it.
-
got it. its ty754vbaaa
-
and I rang greers but they'd need to know if the ratio is 39 or 41 before they could advise. checking the ratio seems over my head.
-
oh - are those ones not the right ones? how will I know a phase 2 box? can you tell from the TY number? and cheers chris, i rang dastek but unfortunately they don't have any in.
-
hehe na he's got two of these freshly built ty754vn2aa boxes for 650 + vat. hmm.. if I could fit it myself then maybe.
-
haha - yyyOU know what you're doing!! lol you knew that would be just enough to soften her up! well judged!
-
cool i'll go down and do that in a wee bit. btw - I've just spoken to roger clark motorsport on the phone to see if they have sti 5/6 boxes, and he tittered under his breath when I suggested that they were stronger than wrx ones. he said they're all the same!?
-
does the box have to be out the car to see that number or can I look under the bonnet?
-
What a nice story, she sound like a honey.

Peter, yeah I first thought it was low on oil then the greersport chap checked it himself said it was absolutely fine - what was his name again peter, you remember when your were gathered round the skyline at kh? (son-of-greer) I'm gonna ring them today. and it shouldn't've needed a service cos it had a full service at hypertech about a month or two previous. maybe it was my driving that killed it.. I do like to time my gearchanges so they jolt rather than mesh nicely (thats too slow!! ) - which doesn't feel kind to it. Palysatan, Thanks for the info, best news i've heard for ages about this. gonna look into it.. It means I've come full circle! having first been advised from mr. forrest about getting a sti5/6 box! shoud've just listened in the first place! Today I will be celabrating that I don't need PPG! What does everyone else run? box/power/torque ?

Ace man good to hear - and i've just seen the tints, looks v good. I had tints on my last scoob and have been trying to stay off em this time.. although mirrored ones tickle me sometimes. I'll look forward to seeing your new graphics!

whoa.. that didn't even dawn on me.. righto so thats that completely out then I agree, but i've been told that if I just go for a wrx box or an sti box (essentially only a few % difference strength-wise) that it is very likely to happen again, and i'll be back to where I am now. I think for the future I would like to use it for track days quite a bit! that was only my first and don't want to give up so early. as for power, well i'm not planning anything ridiculous.. its 310ponies at the mo and quite happy with them. just handling upgrades planned. John - what was your decision in the end are you keeping the scoob????!???

Hi All, after goosing my 3rd gear at knockhill a while ago i've been educating myself about how best to proceed, but after having spoken to lots and lots of people I'm left a little confused and worried. so wanted to air my confusion here for opinions.. options thus. 1. rebuild my existing wrx gearbox pros - it will be built by an expert and i know it will be at its best - cheapish, but don't know how much parts would be cons - next time I go on a track its going to get stripped again. 2. get a 2nd hand wrx box or sti box; (sti box is negligably stronger) pros - cheapest option cons - next time I go on a track it will strip. 3. upgrade to a 6 speed pros - good strong box, perhaps better resale on car!? cons - contant anoyance changing gear all the time, heavy and costly. 4. upgrade to ppg 5 speed pros - everyone says this is the best option, stregnth, ratios etc cons - completely unaffordable at £2500 I hope some genius here who can shed hope for a good affordable solution. I really miss my scoob sitting all sorry for itself.
-
yea unfortunado.. its going to hospital in next couple of weeks though! ..got a few folks with their ears to the ground for a box so should come good in the end!
-
are you gettin rid of your gearbox? (i'm looking for one) Chris.
-
lol Thanks playsatan i'll contact him tomorrow -- I was hoping that 700 would include fitting thanks andy, i'll give them a buzz tomorrow!! muchos gratsios amigo.
-
So - can I ask a question to the experts.. I am currently looking to get a new gear box (or rebuild the one I've got) BUT if I rebuild my existing box, is it likely to just break again the next time I take it on the track? (I'm running 310bhp in a 99 wrx) .. and not planning any more power modifications. so if I was to upgrade, the only option is a £2000 spend? I'd be willing I guess, to spend about 700-800 quids on an upgrade.
-
OH NO JOHN!! sorry to hear your having troubles... Whilst at KH having my own gearbox troubles, I was asking around prices for the worst case (which is necessary in my case) and my options were either get a rebuild, which was quoted at around 150 labour and then parts as well (probably altogether 350 - 400ish for my particulat problem) OR a new gearbox, the nice chap from greers said he MAY be able to pull strings and pick one up for 350ish, plus labour to fit it. I hope i'm not stepping out of line with these guys publisising quotes, but thought I'd better let you know it might not be as bad as you think.

I know everyone always says this when they see pics of scoobys the same colour as theirs.. but this time its true.... very nice car and its the best colour !!
-
cool, thought it was worth checking anyhoo
-
what fuel do you run it on? this happened to me when I got the car and ran it on 95 for a while, after a few fast runs the car went into safe mode. after a few tanks of vpower and a remap it was fine. or just reset the ecu.

finally something going my way!

and welcome to the forums alistair!!

Hi Alistair, thanks for posting that vid of me spinning.. yup - inexperience oozing from every pore! .. but now i've learned to take it very much more easy on thr first lap out the pits! I don't want learn 'not to crash into tyres' the same way though. Unfortunately 3rd is no more - its gonna be a re-build. Neil - GREAT shots, thanks mate!! I Really like this one
