Mike M
Yeah, there's quite a few sets on the M6 just now in the North of England, really spoils the whole driving experience. Have never met anyone who got 3 points yet though, I'm sure it's only a matter of time. Link to comment
Wee Jock
Drove through these many a time on the M2 in Kent, each camera covers its own lane therfore if you start in one lane and change lanes midway through that stretch the cameras cant gauge your average speed. Im almost sure it was in the papers down south that the cameras cant measure both lanes. If Im wrong Im sure someone will correct me. Link to comment
mystery machine
I'm no fan of speed cameras, but I'm less bothered by them if their main purpose is to keep speed down when there are guys working at the side of the road. Unfortunately a sizeable proportion of drivers seem intent on ignoring temporary speed limits. I've cruised down that section of the A80 - I think it had a 40mph limit a the time - doing an indicated 40-ish and had a succession of cars and vans flash past at speeds way above that. You reap what you sow, etc... Having said that, my cynical side wonders whether they won't just leave them there after the roadworks are finished... which just wouldn't be cricket Link to comment

The cameras cover their own lane and one either side, the cameras can actually read any lane but this wasn't in the testing they did for the calibration/authorisation to used them. There were reports of people down south battering down the 3rd lane then swerving to the 1st and even hard shoulder to avoid getting caught. Not sure if any re-calibration or testing has been redone, but 2 lanes on the M80 so wouldn't make any difference. Never go fast through there as either going to KH so saving fuel or going to Hypertech to get the car fixed. Agree with Davie, construction is dangerous enough without cars speeding pass. I'm not sure if it's changed recently but they only had type approval for one lane. However! In a specs setup it used to be only 2 cameras are actually active, so you'd need to know which 2 and avoid being in the same lane for them. Look at the A77 - there's a huge amount of cameras covering that. Link to comment

thefastone
They will take them down after the roadworks, as they had the same thing just north of perth, last year, 2 runs of specs cameras (building the 2 overpasses) not far apart, but they got taken down when the roadworks ended. I'm pretty sure they are only allowed to use them in Scotland for this purpose... although I could easily be wrong, but you'll never see them at any other time, where as in Engerlund, there's a few places they are set up permanent... (There's a very long stretch of them on one of the roads leading to Barnsly...) Link to comment

st3ph3n
I think the A77 is the only one north of the border, which is probably why Dale's never had the pleasure of going through them. If we're going down to Maidens to see Nicola's gran we'll usually go via the backroads. Not because it's quicker but because I can concentrate on the road and not drive with one eye on the road and one on the speedo. Link to comment

On the A77 all the time and sitting with one eye on the speedo and one eye on the road is hardly ideal. As for the A80, along that loads too visiting the parents. I have always tried to sit at 40 but do vary a little to go with the flow of the traffic as I found it sometimes safer to do that. Speed limits are beginning to lose credibility in some cases. On the A80, you could batter through the old Auchenkilns Roundabout at 70mph yet when they build a new ultra safe grade separated junction, it gets reduced to 50mph. The M80 Stepps bypass is a 50, yet the notorious A9 north of Perth is a 60 (70 in the dualled sections). Link to comment
thefastone
Ok, Thanks Stephen, at least you could expand there, I wasn't aware there was a set on the A77... Like I said, could easy be wrong... There's not any more is there? Link to comment
st3ph3n
Not that I know of Dale. They had the Perth ones for a while but they were temporary, and there was some on the 74 for roadworks too. But no other permanent ones that I'm aware of. Link to comment
