  1. Then don't base it on age at all. Base it on having to take an additional test to prove you can handle such a fast car. I don't just mean physically being a good driver, but also whether you mentally have what it takes NOT to boot it around the place at warp factor 7 every time you get into it. I know when I first passed my test I was a careful driver (in mums car) but once I got my first car (Metro 1300S) I had that thing bouncing off the rev limiter everywhere (out of the town anyway). In a way I was lucky that I didn't have plenty of money to be able to buy something more powerful as I was able to step up performance wise step by step, although in my first GTi I was still hitting the rev limiter a lot. It gave me enough time for my ability to catch up with the performance level I was at, rather than going fro a shopping car to a rally car in one step. There just wasn't cars as powerful as the WRX/STi's around in the price range that they are in now when I was that age (things like Cosworths were still pricey and even priceier to insure). I don't know how young guys get insurance these days as it appears to cost hundreds of pounds to insure even cr*ppy cars now.
  2. F***... hopefully it looks worse than it is. Hope they are all okay. Iain.
  3. Actually it might be worth a quick call to see if there is someone you can speak to at the event itself (after the event probably)? At least that way you may be able to speak to a number of guys at the same time than a call to one, who has to call another and another, etc. Iain.
  4. Wasn't too loud on my 94 wagon until I put on the decatted downpipe as well and then it was pretty loud... got a bit droning on longer runs with it after being fully decatted (but I think that would have been true of any exhaust with the wagon).
  5. I don't have either a PS3 or new Xbox so dunno which would be the better option. I have played vids thru' the TV but not HD ones, not exactly sure where people are downloading them from but they are out there somewhere (apparently). I'd imagine a search for HD torrents would show up something. I think the problem (from my PoV) with the Sky HD channels is that it's the same thing on the SD and HD channels and not everything on the HD channel is an HD programme (from what I understand), plus I feel that I already pay sky enough per month for what I watch (not to mention the BBC) without forking out an extra tenner a month.
  6. I don't think that there is enough HD content on there to be worth it IMO. As and when there are more HD programmes on (or sky drop the tenner extra a month for HD) then I might think about it. You can always buy HD/Bluray discs/players and/or download HD content and play them via a laptop/PC instead.
  7. Just looking at the layout there I have a track layout planned already [] In the theme of joint events is it worth contacting the 63 Car Club to see about running something with them as well as they would no doubt have more volenteers to help out? Would they also have proper timing gear, etc for 1/4 mile stuff as well?
  8. Definitely see if you can find out more about it as the more options we have up here the better, esp if there is a bit more run off for people we'd probably manage to get a few more people out on track []
  9. I just found it funny when you did it after me specifically telling you before you went out on track [] Mind you, you did have a bit of a moment coming round the bend before the grandstand so you could be excused []
  10. Anyone got any pictures from it? Know someone who's lad is well into his trucks who couldn't make it this year.
  11. See my edit above... have a mate looking for a Hawkeye so if you have details of your scoob send them thru' and I'll pass them on and see if he's interested. Iain.
  12. You are trading in something against a 56 plate STi or you have a 56 plate STI and are trading it in? If it's the latter it'll depend and lot on the dealer you are dealing with and what you are trading against. Condition, age, mileage, etc all make a huge difference so I'd have thought the guys who would know more about it would need more details before they could answer you. Oops... just checked your posts and see that it's a Hawkeye you have. Whereabouts are you? I have a mate who was looking for a Hawkeye STi and I could pass on your details if you were getting shot of it, plus pics too if you have them online. Iain.
  13. Just thought about it last night but it might be worth removing the couple of pictures of the crashed car on track as you never know if the guy may be claiming from his normal car insurance (looked like plenty of work required to sort) and even with reg plates removed it kind of stands out a bit from the norm.
  14. That's what I was asking though, if it uses the same unit as the OEM setup (ie not taking the sender out and fitting it to a larger unit) then it can't flow more than normal. The way I understood it, was that, with the kits you move the sender to another part on, the opening itself was larger and the sender wasn't able to calculate the flow as it was based on say a 4" diameter whereas the new part used a 5" diameter pipe (figures plucked out the air before someone says it's 3.7546" actually []) Not bothered about spitting flames (although the decatted wagon I had managed them).
  15. Iain, the Apexi (in an upto 96 car) comes with the same bore pipe and attaches to the MAF sensor unit rather than taking the sensor part off the unit and attaching it to the Apexi. It will need a Remap tho as the flow rate is increased due to the size of cone and the fact that it doesnt have 30miles of bends and plastic to pass thru first. Gus PS not sure what the set-up is with post 96 cars[:$] sorry! Surely the ECU takes the air flow info from the MAF sensor? If it is sitting in the exact same bore as the OEM part the it shouldn't matter if it's directly bolted to the end or runs thru' 400 miles of tubing before it gets there. A bore of a certain size can only flow so much at any point in time anyway. That would be my understanding anyway. If that's the case then the std ECU should manage to cope. I know I had a full decat and induction kit on a 94 wagon before for 4.5 years or so and it was never remapped at all (and suffered no problems), now I understand the newage cars may be different in some ways but can't understand why a remap would automatically be required? Obviously if someone has a good explaination for it then I'm happy to hear it but I just can't get my head around why it would be required if it's the same bore, or uses the existing MAF unit (ie not just the sensor put in a larger bore pipe). Iain.
  16. I'm close to Aberdeen but depending on day/time and costs I might be tempted myself []
  17. Is it worth maybe seeing if anyone in the Inverness/Elgin areas (more members there) were interested and maybe moving the "session" closer that way... also means you'll have a longer run home to have fun []
  18. Does the Apexi come with the same bore for mounting the MAF sensor in as the std MAF location do you know? ie would it require a remap due to the difference in airflow to that being measured (esp on an 06STi)
  19. I guess you *may* be able to buy it for salvage so you would get the parts at least even if it wasn't repairable. Depends on the insurance company though and how much they price it at if they are willing to let you buy it back. Sorry to hear about it though []
  20. TBH, I like it all. I prefer the look of no spoiler to a small spoiler... it is a jump from the large spoiler the "normal" (ie non spec D's) STi's have but I like it.
  21. If you can make it as far as Forres take it to Reekies/John Gray and Sons. They are an ex Subaru dealership and I was always fully satisfied with anything they did with my first scoob. They fitted aftermarket parts for me and really knew their stuff. Even started using them for the other car we had at the time as well.
  22. I would imagine if you removed the diffuser then you should be able to fit one but don't know for definite, but can't see what would be so different compared to the WRX or GX for mounting one.
  23. I have lpg on an old V8 Disco and it's the switchable type. From what I've heard there are people with scoob turbo's who've had it done (never seen/heard from any of them though). AFAIK lpg has a higher RON rating than petrol so in theory there shouldn't be a problem running the turbo on it. Generally with lpg though you pick a map that's halfway between the optimal for either fuel type as they need different settings. Another point is that (certainly with the older system on mine) you need to start on petrol when it's cold until the vaporiser is warm enough to atomise the fuel otherwise all that happens is that the car stalls. This would be harder to do on a twin ECU car as you would need to either have some fancy swap over system or manually drive on one ECU until it was warm/hot and then swap over by switching off and starting up with the other ECU. There would then be the extra weight in the additional fuel system (inc tanks) to consider, would be like driving about with a bootful of cr*p the whole time. Also the mpg on lpg is less than it is on petrol, so if you get 22mpg on petrol you are likely to only get 18-20mpg on lpg and whatever size tank you have you will only ever get about 3/4 of a tankfull at any time (it doesn't fill to the top like the petrol tank), so if you have a 50l lpg tank you will get about 40l or so in it meaning about 180 miles out of your tankfull (assuming 20mpg). On the disco it's worth it as it came fitted with it when I bought it and being the V8i it makes the scoob look like a TDi The biggest problem is finding lpg garages to fill it up in, although at half the price (or greater) of petrol if you can find plenty of local garages that sell it it might be worth it.
  24. <jealous> Would love to see the pics when you get back.
  25. Try Reekies (John Gray & Son) in Forres, they used to be a scoob dealer and it's where I always took the last scoob.
