It was really quite random that I chose to go to Germany - more an opportunity than a choice! I like it here though, and particularly in South Germany! There is no noticable alcohol related trouble, no fighting in the streets, no vandalism, no car crime. I can happily leave my car anywhere, with the doors unlocked (and I have done) and the radio still in place and whatever I want left wherever I want in the car and I know it will all still be there when I get back! Sure, there are bad parts in Germany too, but they tend to be the exceptions rather than the norm!
As for immigration, its a complicated situation wherever you are. As Germany is already struggling with high unemployment in the old East, they secured a restriction on immigrants from Poland/CZ, so they havn't had the same issues as the UK with immigrants from the new Eastern Europe EC countries. Immigration from other EC countries is much the same as the UK, so there is no major impact there either. The majority immigrants here are from Turkey - Berlin is actually the 2nd largest Turkish city! The Germans occaissionally complain about the Turks, but nothing on the scale of the complaining going on in the UK at the moment, but percentage wise, the turkish community here is much smaller than the Indian or Pakistani communities in the UK. Germans are generally very pro-Europe, so from my perspective, I've always felt very welcome here.
Generally, I can't complain about immigration as I am effectively an immigrant myself! What I do think is important though, is that immigrants integrate into the society, learn the language (to an acceptable level - trust me, languages are hard) and accept the rules and traditions of the country they move to!
But to be completely honest, the Immigration issues are a tiny part of the problems in the UK at the moment and I can't help feel that the govenment is using it as a smokescreen from the real issues that they can't (or don't want to) deal with!
...oh and not forgetting, Germany is also very pro-car, speed cameras are only in sensible/justifiable places, and I can drive as fast as I like on the Autobahns [] Actually, this seems to have a secondary effect that because people are allowed to choose their own speed limit on the motorways, they generally respect the speed limits on other roads!
