It might also be handy to add the MPH. This helps identify cars that may have traction issues but plenty of power ! Andy

Big thanks to Russ for his hospitality today at Eden Subaru in Cupar and to both Russ and Simon for supplying 2 well prepared cars, it's nice not to have bits dropping off/hoses popping etc during mapping ! Thanks again guys.....enjoy [] Andy -
Ok, so it was a poor analogy... although you could argue that if he kept driving the scoob he would run out of petrol []
-
lol, yea, you got me there []

Thanks for the support guys. To be fair, I have already answered this question in an email and actually recommended Dastek. For a stage 1 tune on a standard-ish car the Unichip offers better value for money than I can with the Apexi. Where the Apexi Power FC scores is if you are embarking on a tuning programme over an extended period and may require a number of mapping sessions as you progress. Also the resale value may be something to consider. Gerry at Dastek knows his stuff and it is a first class set up they have there. Just not sure if Gerry still does much of the regular tuning work however ? The kit is only as good as the operator so make sure you ask for Gerry !! cheers Andy

It depends upon what you get the enjoyment from, building them or driving them ? I guess it's like saying to the guy who climbs Everest " You have gone to all that effort, what the hell you coming back down for, why don't you stay there " []
-
Hehe, made me giggle anyway !! Andy
-
That's rubbish ! Extra ron, over and above what the car was mapped for will have no effect on the boost control. If this was the case then every UK car designed to run 95 ron would have issues with 98 ron optimax or 99 ron tesco fuel. This clearly is not the case. Andy
-
"Most" standardish UK cars will cope with a 50 shot if you use Optimax and octane booster. JDM cars and N20 do not mix unless they are remapped to suit. Running N2O will increase the burn speed and eat into your OE safety margin. With JDM cars, you are already well into the safety margin just by using UK fuel. Andy

So did I [] and i could still hear it in the distance for about 5 mins after he left my workshop !! Andy

I can give you loads more midrange boost if you're brave enough Andy

A big thanks from me too, to the guys at AWD. They do really make the effort to get the cars properly sorted for mapping [H]

The switchable map has not been verified yet for the MY05 cars so Graham had to make do with just the HP version [] Andy ps raise right foot for LP version []

Running ON boost between mods fitted and being mapped!!!!!!!!!

This P1 was due to come in last Friday for a mapping session, sadly less than a week before this it let go. I hear of this quite often, be carefull out there ! Andy -

TOTB or Scooby shootout ? Both for me I hope ! Andy -
Scottish Optimax, ok for you ?
andrew_forrest replied to andrew_forrest's topic in Scottish Scoobies
It can vary Alan but approx 3-4 degrees with 3ml/ltr NF or 10% Methanol. 95 octane usually requires 5-6 degrees less than Optimax and really makes a high boost engine feel flat, not so much effect on a std boost car. I do a fair bit mapping in Southern Ireland and they only have 95 there, it's depressing work ! Andy -
Scottish Optimax, ok for you ?
andrew_forrest replied to andrew_forrest's topic in Scottish Scoobies
This is the ECU doing its business as designed. it will retard timing if it hears the onset of knock, power will reduce as a result. This is usually fuel related, other issues that can cause it are over temperature (unlikely this time of year) burning oil (not expected on a car so new) running lean due to failing fuel pump (or maf on 99/00 cars) There are many more reasons the ECU will retard timing. Sometimes the ECU's can be V E R Y slow to return to normal, a reset being required in some cases. Andy -
Anyone suspect the recent quality of our Scottish Optimax ? My 03WRX has taken a dislike to it lately. I have a number of maps for the car for 95Octane/ Optimax and Optimax plus booster. On my Optimax only map that the car has been running happily on for the past six months, after last fill up it almost immediately switched down on to the low octane maps, suggesting it was not happy with the fuel ? On further investigation the ignition timing had also retarded some 4 degrees due to knock detection. I also had a customers car in recently that was only happy to run what I would call 95 octane timing advance. Just wondering if this is just a localised batch (wrongly filled storage tank?) or if it is more widespread ? I know some of the tuners down south had a few cars let go shortly after the Hemel Optimax shortage, they blamed that on the new batch of fuel. I'd be surprised if that would affect us up here as we are supplied from Grangemouth I believe ? Andy

For an additional 20bhp you could go for the hybrid conversion based on your existing TD04, the advantage here is that it retains a very wide power band and instant response for back road blasts. For +40/50 the 05-16 or for +60/80 05-18 Andy

Congratulations mate These are some nice parts btw ! Andy -
"Does BIG BHP mean fast road car" Depends on the road really ! In 95% of situations/roads I prefer my mid 300bhp WRX over the 800/900 ? or thereabouts Sti. Most that go for the big numbers will eventually reflect and concede that the greatest driving pleasure came from a much lower bhp version. Andy

<< On the graph the torque peaks arround 3600 revs. Can anyone explain why it then drops at 4000 to 290lbft, then rises againg at 4500 to arround 295 lbft. After this it falls steadily. >> Thats usually due to a boost spike on the rollers. This doesn't happen the same on the road as when the power rises the car starts to accelerate harder, on the rollers it is held back regardles of power, hence the boost (read torque) spike. Andy -

Intercooler and turbo would be the next move. The original TD04 is pretty much maxed out at this level but the upside is that it is on full boost by circa 2500rpm which makes for a very wide and useable powerband I'm currently running my own WRX 03 on a TD05-18G at circa 375bhp but to be honest, once the testing article is completed for scoobymag, I'll be returning to the TD04 hybrid with 320/320 and full boost from 2600rpm Andy
