O2 sensors only work right when the get up to the 600 - 800 c range so the element helps it on its way until EGT is sufficient to carry it aloong without the heating element. Now with the element being duff then it will be pumping in more fuel to compensate for longer so a replacement would be the order of the day. Bite the bullet and get a proper OE one as the non std ones are prone to rapid failure
