Why? Not knowing if it was an STi or not to start with. STi discs are massive and very durable, they'd take a helluva abuse to make them need changing so soon. As it turns out it's a WRX and as the OP says they are fine, as suspected.

Check the disc then and decide from there. If pads only 1mm then chances are the rusty lips of the disc will be touching by now!

Is it a WRX or STi? Front discs on an 06? Already? Have you been to the moon and back or do you park it with your front wheels in the sea? Seriously, if it was at the dealers they are a tad pessimistic about what needs doing. First thing I'd do is get the front wheels off and see exactly how worn they are. I'd suspect there is more than enough left for many miles yet!
