Modern cars are a lot easier and from what I understand you can use the engine as normal but try not to stick at one speed, especially higher speeds, like long motorway runs. I wouldn't rev to high before changing gear either, but that's just my own way of thinking. As for brakes... try to not step on them hard all the time, spread your breaking. Same when you have new ones fitted to.
One thing I was told is to keep an eye on your oil level and top up as needed. Don't worry it won't drink it like a fish but you don't want it running low.
What do other folk think, about 500miles is sort of mark you're aiming for when running in??
