zeolite Posted April 30, 2008 Posted April 30, 2008 Having owned 4 scoobs from 99 on I think I am qualified to comment. The biggest difference is seating position. I liked the sit IN it classic position and it took a while to get used to the sit ON it newage position. I suppose it does depend on how tall you are though. My old 99 wagon was more "chuckable"and I was brave enough to find the limits of that but no way can I get near the limits of a new age. I drove Acids car last year and I loved the "Go kart" handling on it. New ages are grown up cars for modern day. The Classics are still the hooligans and always will be. Vive le difference!

iainc Posted April 30, 2008 Posted April 30, 2008 For me the best looking scoobs are classics & Blobeyes, it was the classic that i fell in love with & got me into scoobs in the 1st place, but i've never owned one but i've driven a few (wrx's & Type R)The Bug & hawkeye front ends don't look as nice as a classic or blob ( i did owned a bug myself) & the new hatch just isn't a scoob imho. IMO the best looking scoobs are the 22b, Type R's & Wr1's (ok thats 2 - 1 to the classics there lol) I like the style of the 2dr classics, but I love the style of the hawkeye. The problem with the new hatch is that the new one just doesn't fit with the evolution of the entire line up since the first classic model. All the way from the first classic to the last hawkeye you could see how and where the model was evolving. With the hatchback it could have come from anywhere. It might be as good or even better a car than the rest of the previous models but it doesn't seem to share any lineage with the rest of them (other than the badge and name). TBH, in a way they should have changed the name as Ford did when the Escort "died" and became the Focus as that was another model you could see evolving from the mk1 to the 5 or 6 I think it ended as? The focus was a real change from any of the escorts before it.
ScoobySounds Posted April 30, 2008 Posted April 30, 2008 I think its time to crack out the large font for this. classics rule! This sexy black hawkeye was posted by g.mac a while ago and really is the first newage thats turned my head in any serious way but apart from that, it is all about the 99 / 00 classics for me, I just wish subaru had evolved the classic design even further. With more striking, aggressive and bolder lines, but is essentially still a classic shape.

If you are having a classic then you really need a 94-96 to have a "true" classic... otherwise it's just a mk11 classic

iainc Posted April 30, 2008 Posted April 30, 2008 Well said that man !! Early classics rule ( although slightly biased view ) Had one of the very first myself (Uk-wise anyway) and one of the last of the "normal" ones (06STi... close enough to last ones). Still think they should have made a 2dr hawkeye... now *that* would have been the best looking one IMO.
jimser Posted April 30, 2008 Posted April 30, 2008 never driven a classic so can't really comment on them but i do have a newage that weighs 1290kgs from the factory with plated diffs and dccd so i imagine it might give them a run for there money

bobbyc Posted April 30, 2008 Posted April 30, 2008 I've been drivin & always had some variation of subaru since 96, loved the classics were great fun, I remember the days when you had to wait 9 months from ordering a classic turbo & you didn't get a choice of colour ooooh, had a 53 plate STi for three yrs but always felt it would be better with a five speed gearbox, got a GB270 just now & it's the closest to a classic that i've driven, once I spend a bit & get Dunc at Hypertech to sort the suspension out & play around with the engine a bit it'll be even more fun, only complaint desperately needs an exhaust to make it sound like a scooby
555pmcn Posted April 30, 2008 Posted April 30, 2008 First Scooby was a 95 n plate silver wagon with prodrive handling pack. I always described it as a cheap poorly built jap car with awesome performance and handling. Interior and build quality was shocking and that was with the mcrae recaro seats. I left scoobs and came back about two years ago with a my03 wrx ppp. as a grown up now I feel its an amazing car that can carry the family in comfort and safely, but will still put a smile on your face when ever you push it. I love scoobies, but early classics are in the hands of neds now. I love my blob but get excited at the sight of a minted facelift classic. At least we dont drive EVO's !!!!!
RA Dunk Posted April 30, 2008 Posted April 30, 2008 What i do know is that a standard Wr1 can kick any standard classics ass, except from an STi RA i agree too
fai17 Posted May 1, 2008 Posted May 1, 2008 And the debate goes on..... There is no thing such as ideal solution. To compromise is to make silly judgement. As with all evolution things do get better stiffening and in turns makes subjects heavier. Good god i need to lay off the vino but i thing for sure is you can't beat bigger displacement and lots of light weight. 600bhp in a newage that is as light as a classic RA is going to be the best weapon of all. but for now my heavy weight 550bhp newage will do. Thanks and good night.
RS Grant Posted May 1, 2008 Posted May 1, 2008 Had 4 Classics... Now have a Hawkeye... Dont use it other than when weather is nice/owners club meetings, so really should have a no-nonsense Classic sitting there thats only aim is to put a big childish grin on my face, make lots of noise and tear up the b-roads. But after the couple of wee bits I've done, my Hawkeye (IMO) looks soooo aggressive at the front end and I really like the understated, sleeper thing too. Honestly, after having my car for just over a year now (a record for me), I love it. Plus with the 2.5, Brembos, DCCD 6-spd box, etc its got all the ingredients that I'd probably end up throwing in a Classic... so I'm happy enough to trade a few 100kg to stay in a car engineered with the uprated bits fitted as standard. That said, if I saw a mint, low mileage, Version 6 Type R in Black, then I'd find it very hard not to jump back to the Classic side again. Cheers, Grant

trackhound Posted May 1, 2008 Posted May 1, 2008 I love classics but Newage ECUs can be re-mapped using free software whereas most classic ECUs need to be chipped or replaced with an Apexi unit.
