irish al Posted March 29, 2007 Posted March 29, 2007 Looking at getting a helmet for track days. What kind should I get. Been having a look but not sure. Do they have to meet any rules/regulations as they seem to range from £40 to £300+ As I will be in a car would an opened face helmet do. Al
cupradave Posted March 29, 2007 Posted March 29, 2007 Open faced helmets are perfect for cars and to be honest I prefer them in a car but generally most helmets would do the job fine. I have a Nitro full face helmet I bought for riding bikes, minimotos and the likes. It cost me 75 quid and I use it whenever I do a track day as although I prefer an open face one I did not see the point in owning 2 helmets. The only thing to make sure of is that it is comfy and fits well, remember you are wearing it for a very important reason, god forbid anything happened but it is there to save your head not to mention your life.
gus the bus Posted March 29, 2007 Posted March 29, 2007 Al, I would always at minimum go for an ACU gold approved helmet. Have a gold square-ish sticker on the back of the helmet. Prices can be had from about £50 upwards. you can get RAC approved helmets for motorsport use but these can be a bit more expensive companies like Bell, Simpson and Sparco make them but your looking generally @ £200+ Mind you only have one heid tho. Openface is best or vision/temperature for track use Gus
cupradave Posted March 29, 2007 Posted March 29, 2007 Yeah as Gus said look for the gold sticker, I beleive all Nitro helmets conform with said standard and they tend to be cheaper than 400 quid for say an Arai
gus the bus Posted March 29, 2007 Posted March 29, 2007 Dave, I have a Nitro one too for "general " use. Unfortunately not all of them are ACU gold approved as I was looking @ them last weekend. Gus
cupradave Posted March 29, 2007 Posted March 29, 2007 Oh ok didnae ken that, Cheers Gus will remember that if I ever have to replace mine [Y] Every one I have seen had the sticker. Maybe its just the places I have seen them do not stock the ones that do not conform.
fai17 Posted March 29, 2007 Posted March 29, 2007 I got a open face one and it's perfect for in car track use.
corsa Posted March 29, 2007 Posted March 29, 2007 I have a Bell full face for sale,Motorsport approved and stickered, pm me for pictures, offers via PM.
duncan_mccormick Posted March 29, 2007 Posted March 29, 2007 Make sure the helmet has gold sticker with double gold border, if it has that then your ok. And something to think about.....£10 helmet £10 head!!
st3ph3n Posted March 29, 2007 Posted March 29, 2007 http://www.demon-tweeks.co.uk/products/Pro...p;pcode=SPA358L That's the one I have Al. They call me the human cannonball because of it. Sometimes I lie awake at night and cry about it.

Auldy Posted March 29, 2007 Posted March 29, 2007 Got an Arai GP5 as i use this for racing in both cars n karts, but would recomend an open face helmet for trackdays because u have greater line of vision
ally-b Posted March 29, 2007 Posted March 29, 2007 I have a few ,very good, full-face motorcycle helmets (AGV , Bell , Bieffe and Shoei ) I usually just take one of them if I'm going to any trackdays. But I must admit that I feel rather claustraphobic wearing full-face in the car . I always say that I'll get a decent open-face specificaly for trackdays (I don't like them on the bike 'cos I feel kinda 'vulnerable') Either full or open face type will do for trackdays - it is down to personal preference . Just make sure whatever you choose is approved for motorsport by ACU or RAC. Although as pointed out earlier , if you go for open-face like St3ph3n and Fai17 you will have to get used to being called "Zippo the human cannonball" [][] Al.
irish al Posted March 29, 2007 Author Posted March 29, 2007 Thanks for all the good advice. I have decided to get a Nitro Open Face and its ACU gold approved http://www.nitro-helmets.com/product_categ...?category_id=19 Any comments on this before I buy one. Think I will go to a shop and try some different sizes on as i havent a clue what size i will need. Al
