Directional tyres the wrong way round

Recommended Posts

Any issues with running them the wrong way round? The left sided tyres on my track set have seen better days. In fact on one of them the word Bridgestone on the sidewall has had half of it worn away, which is damn good going if I do say so myself.

So I was thinking of just swapping the wheels to the wrong sides. Otherwise I'll just put a post in for sale and wanted and see if anyone's getting new tyres soon and get their old ones off them for cheap/free/beer tokens.

St3ph3n, deffo not a good plan! directional tyres are set up to run in one direction and one only. You'll end up off the Raith roundabout[:S]

Unless, you do mean that you are changing them from rim to rim rather than wheels and tyres to the other side!!!?

I'd be changing them wheels and tyres to the other side. Although I guess I could do rim from rim so it was the opposite shoulders.

They would not however get ANY road use (because they're well past legal). Purely track. Drive up with the Eagles on as normal then get them put on for track time fun.

Not a tyre expert by any meenz, but directionals are for expelling water, you still have the same rubber making contact with the tarmac.

Dry surface stuff you may get away with but in the wet a no no [st] [au].

I was running on the cord at the MLR sprint [O] [N] [sn]

See my thinking was the same as Marty, so it was a genuine question. The tyres would only be used on track, where hopefully it will be dry. HOWEVER! After doing a bit of thinking back to last year - the weekend of the first track day happens to be the same weekend last year where the M74 was shut in the borders due to the weather, and we got a damn good snow fall in west central too. So maybe getting the cars fitted with snow chains is the best idea for the trackday!

I was just trying to save a bit of cash on the track days really. If I save money there then I can move along project GO FASTER which has a current ETA of April or May.

Stephen you could always turn them inside oot, wala !!!

If you are serious , then ask a friendly tyre fitter to swap your LHS tyres onto your RHS rims and v-v

Don't run tyres backwards , wet performance will be dangerous as will braking .

Worse ...in extreme cases ,due to directional construction , they can 'unravel' with tread peeling off [:D]

BTW don't ruin your snowchains at Knockhill - you'll be needing them for the March highland fling [;)]

Stephen your idea is no as daft as it sounds. I know a few of the Caterham guys run with there directionals the wrong way round and they reckon it gives even better grip. Admittedly I'm no so sure about in the wet but certailnly in the dry you would be safe enough no probs! May work out differently on a scooby though as usual take it easy for a  few laps and if it's wet you can keep your road tyres on.

Change them from LF rim to RB rim etc would cure your problem but unless you know someone it might not be worth the cost.

Stephen,

just turn up early at our next event, and Ronnie from Wheels Around will swap them over on the rims for you and balance them also. Only thing to be aware of is that if the worn shoulders are on the inside, you need to pay extra attention to them as they can wear quite quickly through to the canvas and you can't see it just by looking at them. You need to really check both tyres closely after each session on track.

Even more reason NOT to do it if you are using on track. I'd say change from rim to rim then atleast your running in true direction IMHO.

racing teams from karting up 2 F1 stick rotational tyres on the wrong way as it improves handling and traction, wether it b slick, inters or wet race tyres [:)

wee bit useless info for yas lol

I work for kwik fit and if you run them the wrong way on a wet day you will end up with them aqua planning as the water will build up in front of them and have no where to go as for dry use you wouldnt notice any difference in them its only wet you would mate hope that helps.

cheers
