2559B Posted November 15, 2005 Posted November 15, 2005 I posted up probably the most controversial debate ever to grace the pages of SIDC ............. ........... DO YOU PREFER VINEGAR OR BROWN SAUCE ON YOUR CHIPS ????? Given the recent rise in newbies, I feel it's an appropriate time to once again re-ignite the frying pans of Scotland & with the modern technology of internet polls ................ Let's settle this once & for all !!!
Iaing Posted November 15, 2005 Posted November 15, 2005 Up here in Aberdeen, if you ask for sauce in a chippy you'll more than likely get tomato sauce! As it happens, just plenty salt and vinegar for me Iain
dougster Posted November 15, 2005 Posted November 15, 2005 French fries and mayonnaise for us cultured Weegies!!!!!!!! Vote withheld.
andy Posted November 15, 2005 Posted November 15, 2005 Aberdonian who lived in Edinburgh and countered "salt 'n' sauce" with "Na quine, salt 'n' vinegar"
dan_jess Posted November 15, 2005 Posted November 15, 2005 Salt and vinegar for me 2, brown sauce mings! If i go to a chippy and im taking it home, i dont get anything on it, that way ur supper keeps its crispyness, then when u get home tan it with salt n vinegar
2559B Posted November 15, 2005 Author Posted November 15, 2005 Being the topic-starter, I have to lay my chips out onto the counter here ....... I did vote for vinegar on the original thread. However, since moving back thru to the West, all I get is vinegar ...... & to be perfectly honest .......... I MISS MY BROWN SAUCE !!! I VOTED SAUCE !!!!!

How was your day in paradise? >> The strangest thing I find is the Forth Road Bridge - you pay to get in to Fife, I personally would pay double to get back out
alistair_learmonth Posted November 15, 2005 Posted November 15, 2005 As my wife has worked and run a chippy for more years than she cares to remember a will let you into a little secret for all you lothian punters. Chippy brown sauce is watered down with vinegar as a matter of course. thats why its runny. In the case of fish they are salted to dry them out so the batter can stick better. I have salt, vinegar and plenty of sauce on my suppers. Wonder if the chip shop fairy god will smite me for telling the secret.
5cooby Posted November 15, 2005 Posted November 15, 2005 being a true weegie lots and lots of salt and vinegar my habit was started by my mother when i was at a very young age, "dae ye want salt an vinegar" ma maw would say "aye loads" salt and vinegar are bad for you!! NAW ITS NO. but i reckon the chippies in the east end of glasgow put something in the S+V it makes them mental and want tae batter every one, smash windaes and drink buckfast
gus the bus Posted November 15, 2005 Posted November 15, 2005 Salt and......SAUCE for me (well vinegar too actually cos as GSP rightly says the sauce is watered doon with vinegar!!!) Gus
