Idea's for towing car

Hi....

I'm looking into getting a towing car... or rather a car i can drive, and do a bit of towing every 2nd weekend (at most).

My thoughts for the pure tow car are.....

Landy Defender 90 TDi

Pajero SWB TD

Toyota HiLux (surf i think)

or a pure old clapped out banger....

sierra 2.8 4x4, cav etc

what cars/4x4's would you suggest that would be upto the task of towing around 1.3ton (car+ trailor) and be my daily?

Impreza?

Still fancy an R32 GTR ??

A4 Avant TDi?

I think the daily driver and tower would be more economically viable than a daily + a sep tow car...

What about an Omega Estate.... HUGE Load Space, could probably drive the car into the boot and throw away the trailor!! face-icon-small-happy.gif

Pick up a 2.5td Omega, they use a BMW 6-Cyl Diesel Engine and providing its been serviced correctly, it'll go on for ever. My old man used to run a MY95 Omega 2.5 V6 Estate, was still going strong when he eventually moved it on.......... at 189,000 miles.

Cheers,

Grant

my95 omega LOL

Budget - sub 4k if just a dedicated tow car...

but if tow/daily about 8k to 10k

UK Impreza turbo would be good yes? Or too light?

Is the estate/wagon version much heavier at all?

What do you think an R32 GTR would be like at towing? (thirsty i know).....

Got quite convinced yeaterday that i'd love a Defender.... proper rugged... but they seem to hold there value so well! Which in one way may be good i suppose! With the Pajero coming in a bit of a limp 2nd.

BUT then i started thinking 'Could i really live with these cars daily'

I have just spent a long time looking into this too when I sold the scoob & bought a track car.

The major issue here is Tow vehicle weight and towing capacity.

I looked at all types of things, BMW 540 (4.4l), Legacy (2.5l), Shogun (3.5, 2.8 &2.5l)

I eventually went for the Shogun 2.8 SWB TD. It has the weight & towing capability without question. It also gives good all round vision when towing / reversing etc.

Ok its not fast, but people still get out of the way face-icon-small-happy.gif and 33mpg on average including some towing in the mix.

2.8 engine is better than the 2.5 as it has chain instead of belt & more grunt. I held out for a wide arch version 98 on

but these are nearer the 6K mark

Just re read - 1.3 ton. Yep you are looking at a 4x4 for that.

OR

How does an Audi S2 sound? Coupe or Avant.... all seem to be 100k+ miles though

Adam...I use my UK turbo wagon and it tows no problem at all.I have done 100s of miles of towing with it and I don't think it is any compromise. just remember to get a 4" spacer plate for the tow ball.

A cayenne turbo would be my ideal tow car, or a chipped V10 Diesel toerag.

Back down to earth if it s a pure tow slag then a Big 4x4 but not a ropey old Tdi, has to have soem grunt so something like a V8 Disco, if its to be used everyday then as much torque as possible, 1.3tonnes is way to low btw, a decent trailer will weigh circa a ton, plus the car and you will in terms of the law be towing illegally!

I know i am every time i use the audi!

yup.... i've decided....

Range Rover V8 Auto (not sure on engine size etc)

Will get one when i'm back from Indonesia face-icon-small-smile.gif

Lowell.... do you want to use it when i'm out of the country if your S4 is too light? Sure we could sort something re tax/ins etc

Can look into it aye, means could get shot of the audi and getting something more fun, E46 M3 perhaps face-icon-small-happy.gif

Disco's are cheaper i think?!?

that reminds me.....

I saw about 10 hookers on salamander the other day.... mass outing for the nice weather i think....

Anyway.... I'll have to watch the kerbs with this beast, prob wont even notice if i go up one.

I'll get some pics of it after i pick it up tonight

I saw/heard your scooby last night crossing the bridge next to the lighthouse bar........lovely motor.

Yes,I too spotted the ladies of the night who favoured the summer weather...............face-icon-small-wink.gif

I think their making a final push,as when those new flats are occupied on salamander they'll not be able to get away with it anymore.

I also heard that there are some road changes taking place down our way.Next year all the traffic will be diverted along to the ocean terminal(turning right at the end of salamander) and the water of leith is being made somewhat pedestrian........So the young lady in the shore barbers was telling me anyhow.

You sure these ladies weren't waiting for a bus to Gleneagles, not long until the G8 summit. Maybe they'd gone up for a recce face-icon-small-happy.gif

Nice line up of buggies Adam. I'm sure thats probably a few folks dream garage!
