Help regarding accident and can this be fixed ?

I went to buy another Impreza today

I had a look on autotrader.co.uk and seen one at a garage for £3295 reduced to clear.

I phoned up and spoke to the guy and asked a few questions

What's the MOT ?

till September

What's the mileage ?

148,000 KPH

What's the bodywork like ?

good condition for its age

What's it like mechanically ?

mechanically its sound

What's the warranty ?

warranty is 6 months

Does it have a stereo ?

no doesn't have a stereo

So took a day off work and popped in the Corsa and drove to Leeds to get the car. I was happy getting rid of the Corsa as a trade in.

Got there 260miles later and had a look at the car....a little disappointed to say the least.

I said to him, do you know the door is a different colour than the car ?

He said yeah that's why its cheap did you not see the 2 dents on the wings ? I replied no ? Do you have the keys

He handed me 2 keys, one which opened the door and the other which turned the ignition. (which would point to a stolen and recovered car?) Checked the mileage. 188,000 Kph (Depending on if it has been converted or not)

So obviously I was not happy the car was a wreck and he told me it was in good condition for its age. He then tried to sell me the car next to it, which 5 minutes earlier he said was needing a new clutch !

He had about 6 imprezas there and it nearly made my cry how bad condition they were. It was like a graveyard for the dead.

To top it all off earlier I had seen them tearing up the Ind Est in a white Sti which they were showing someone. Now you know it takes at least 15 mins to warm an impreza up and I doubt this had been warmed up properly.

I had no other choice but to jump back in the corsa and drive the 260 miles back up the road. not a happy chappy I will tell you.

I had a think about my car on the way up the road and I am thinking about fixing it as long as there is no engine damage.

I have a complete facelift front end sitting in my work which I have been collecting. So have a bonnet, bumper, grille, headlights, side lights, indicators. All I need is a couple of wings which I can get for £55 delivered from EBay and perhaps a jig, along with some welding ?

What you think ?

cheers

I can't believe your luck mate, so soon after we got it running.....er.....better too !

If you need anything to replace the 'better' bits, let me know, got lots of std stuff kicking around here.

With the luck this car has brought you, i think you should let it go. engine is likely to have bent valves at least.

Sorry to hear that mate last I'd heard your car wasn't going you must have just shelled out to get it fixed then this happens. Nightmare! Always happens that way though doesn't it. If it can't be fixed and you get it back might be interested in buying some bits from you (scavenger!!) it was a nice motor.

Are the valves likely to be bent ?

The impact happened on the passenger side of the car, this crushed the battery and knocked the batter terminals off obviously cutting the power to the engine immediately.

The chassis leg has snapped through the belt, but hopefully due to the cut in power the engine would be ok ?

is there any way I can tell ?

I am seriously thinking about getting it fixed. It all comes down to if the engine is ok or not.

As said I have most of the bits and with a jig and a bit of paint it could be brought back to life.

The only other concern is the drive shafts etc would this be expensive to fix ?

cheers

The risk is that when the belt snapped, the valves stopped moving before the pistons did. The end result here obviously could be a piston-valve clash and likely valve damage. On the positive side the engine was presumably just ticking over, so at least it didn't have to drop from 6000rpm or anything too high. The other plus is that being a turbo engine, the copression ratio is slightly lower, so the gap between the pistons and valves is a bit bigger. Not sure how much difference this would make in this situation, but it might help a little. If it makes you feel any better, I had a car a while ago with the chassis leg jammed into the pulleys and the engine WAS ok ! face-icon-small-smile.gif I was very surprised, as their were teeth stripped off the belt and everything! So fingers corssed for you on that one.

Not sure the best way to check though to be honest. 2 ways spring to mind depending how technical you are.

1 - Take the heads off and have a look at the valves and piston crowns for damage (you may be able to tell by looking at the top of the valves, but this wouldn't really be conclusive).

2 - Stick a new belt on it, line it up and turn it over by hand for a few revs (with the plugs out). If all sounds ok, fire it up. This risks extra damage if there is belt valves, but at this stage maybe it doesn't matter. You should probably do a compression test on it too, in case there's some minor damage to valve seats etc. You could also add an 'in-between' stage of turning it over on the starter to hear if it sounds even (ie equal compression) before trying to start up.

I've not had a huge amount of experience inside the impreza engine, so you'd be best to talk to someone who has (Andy F ???) before doing any of the above, but there's a few ideas to start you off at least. You're going to need to drop the engine to get the damage repaired anyway I'd have thought, as the repairer will need access to the chassis legs by the look of things. This should make the manual inspection route a little easier at least.

Final bit of advice - check out the price of a jig rental before you make any decisions. If I remember correctly it was around £500 so could add a fair bit to the cost of repair.

If you've got a pile of bits already, and are prepared to put some more work in, it might be worthwhile, but is probably dependant on the roof damage. If there's a kink up there, things aren't so rosy face-icon-small-sad.gif

p.s. I doubt drive shafts will be expensive as most breakers yards will have a pile of them available as there not common things that need replaced. Try here under transmission parts for prices/availability : http://www.carparts-uk.com

Depends on roof damage.

Ive got front struts here if you need them, seeing as you got the car off me.

Otherwise rejig (Lots of adverts for people with a mobile jig who will travel so...)

Once the chassis is sorted needs complete front end and all the slam panels. Each slam panel is approx £30 each.

Have you lost the Hybrid intercooler etc?

Driveshafts are peanuts. Depends if it has damaged the gearbox though or not.

Remove the cambelt covers by pulling the radiator out and checking to see if anything has jammed the wheels and if the cambelt is ok.

Alternatively you could get another write off car with good chassis and transfer all your bits onto it? Then use your shell ID for the new one. But adds costs etc.

If I can be of any help call me 07740047043.

yep inner wing snapped the cambelt cover and belt so suspect valve damage

was supposed to be getting a guy up to look at the car but he never got back to me so will prob write it off, shame too as the car is in pretty good nick and the accident wasnt my fault :-(
