To Mod Or Not To Mod

After reading some recent posts I wondered what makes people decide to modify their scoobs and then at what point do they stop or are forced to stop? When I purchased my latest scoob I was set on getting new exhaust and getting it mapped as it is going to be used as a toy and not for every day use but now I am wondering do I just leave it as is power wise and when stuff breaks then upgrade it? will be fast enough for track use for me as is. I can appreciate though that for the novice modders who have remapped a car once that it really does show you how power should be delivered so this might drive decision to mod the next scoob they get. Or do we just want to modify just because most folk do?

I don't drive my scoob daily anymore so it is a bit of a toy but for me its a hobby. My mate has a type r, i have the scoob, we spend weekends fitting parts, buggering about and having a laugh in the process. I've never been one for big body kits etc but genuine performance gains, it keeps me interested in the car. I'm coming to the point personally now where it will be a mod when it breaks but I think you have to put your stamp on it before you get to that....of all people Matt Le Blanc on top gear said that someone that knows nothing about cars shouldn't be able to buy the same car as you from the show room, thats just not fair and I find that far too true personally lol......rant over :)

The only part of my bug that hasnt been touched is the interior and steering , apart from that everything else has been upgraded or replaced , my latest problem is schect handling , im at the point of calling it a day with the car now as its becoming a money pit that i dont want to keep filling . But where do you stop i think its ongoing and never will stop there is always a better upgrade just round the corner.

I agree with Kenny. I had a brand new blobeye WRX back in 05 which I swore i wasn't going to modify in any way. I then started to go on SIDC runs etc and ended up putting a PPP on it before selling it. I was scoobyless for a while and then bought a bugeye WRX which had some sensible mods already on (around 270 BHP) with the intention of modding it for a fast road / track car. I put handling, braking, performance and interior mods on it (in that order!!) and ended up with a very usable 330+bhp. I was then thinking of the next stage of uprgades - APs, better suspension (than the TEINs that were fitted), bigger turbo etc, etc, etc...

I wasn't using the car as much as I had been and decided that it was good enough as it was. I haven't done anything else to it for a couple of years now except keep it well maintained and serviced. It still puts a smile on my face (and a surprised look on BMW / Audi drivers!!) every time I get in it.

I think you just need to work out how far you're going to go.

Hmmm........maybe just another couple of BHP would be nice

I bought mine as I had a longing for one for years and years. It was always a second car but I didn't have any intentions of modding it. Then I started visiting SIDC and the rest is history.

Minor mods and remaps to start with and that was great. Then I realised the value of the car was heading South quicker than a BA jet heading for South Africa, and that was when I made a concious decision to make the car exactly what I wanted it to be. I'll never sell it in one piece so I just literally went mental within my budget.

As far as future mods go it's reached a peak where it needs thousands spent to lift it to the next level and I can't justify the massive cost for relatively little improvement in performance. Some minor tweaks probably but it's quick enough now to make me grin like a certain cat :)

bought my sti new with ppp figuring it wouldnt need any mods but fitted a backbox for more noise, then saw a full system going cheap so even more noise, except it needed a remap of course...

then the shocks failed, after the 2nd set lasted 5k miles i decided to get the cheapest coilovers i could which were a huge improvement

now with the extra power and handling i was finding that when i did need the brakes i was hitting them hard and they were the weak link so after an unsuccessful try with uprated (apparently) discs and pads i managed to find a good set of 2nd hand ap calipers and discs which solved that problem

so with the brakes and suspension working so well it seemed rude not to add a bigger turbo to exploit them - and now im at the point where im happy with the car it goes stops and handles the way ive always wanted, it doesnt use any more fuel or is any less useable day to day than standard apart from speed bump avoidance

i never meant for any of this to happen but now i can finally stop spending on it, honest....

What turbo did you up grade to?

Got my WRX ppp blob 15 months ago and have decided not to performance mod (better to buy an STI for that) as the on road performance is good enough with 261 bhp and an extra 20ish isn't likely to make that much difference, an more is too much cost v gain. Upgraded brakes/handling does make sense, though using even 90% of any performance cars handling ability is ott on the road alot of the time not to mention insurance issues and the occasional reliability nightmares associated with engine tuning. If a standard cars performance isn't enough save up for a used 911, bike or GTR etc haha then we'd probably realise Scoobies are alot cheaper to buy and run in comparison (and dryer than a bike)!

I went for an Owen Developments 400 Peter, not a really big power one but spool ups pretty good and it rockets round to the red line :D

and any modern sports bike will walk away from even a tuned impreza in a straight line - standard figures for mine are 0-60 2.2 secs and vmax of somewhere around 200mph. note i said straight line though - through the corners it can be different as has been noted on the last few flings.... ;)

I had one of the Owen development 400 turbos too. I think they have change the spec from my original one.

Mines was a bit laggy but go me a 12.6 on crail with it ;)
