pmacFTO Posted June 14, 2009 Posted June 14, 2009 (edited) Just been out with the dogs and the back end stepped out on 2 different roundabouts tonight! Both around 30mph. Just passed MOT and had 2 rear shocks fitted and 2 new front Goodyears F1s - rears have plenty tread and tracking is fine too. I corrected first one then it snapped back on me (really need to do some training at lotus first or KH!) but 2nd one I was expecting and it was a bit gentler but the back end just went too easily for my liking! Any ideas? Edited July 22, 2009 by pmacFTO

Any ideas? Hi Bud Yip I had that when I got my shocks done and it is not a pleasant experience, took it into the garage to get the alignment and tracking redone, after that it was great again, not sure if that helps but it sounds fairly similar to what happened to me. cheers John
scoob fae ork Posted June 14, 2009 Posted June 14, 2009 Could be a bolt not tight enough on the botom of the strut if they are slack your car will step its butt out every where.
pmacFTO Posted June 15, 2009 Author Posted June 15, 2009 (edited) I am always checking tyre pressure, slightly obsessive about it heh I'll stick it in to CLCM or Hypertech to get alignment done. It was fine this morning in the dry and I know the 2 roundabouts are near lorry depots and a bus depot so I always assume they will have some oil, grease or even diesel... jonboywrx Posted June 15, 2009 Posted June 15, 2009 i lost back end other night.. ended up going backwards down the A90 I was only going about 20 mph after exiting a roundabout... it was wet so im putting it down to either water or oil, but i also have F1's with good thread and heard these arent that good in wet It was a brown panty moment though!!
st3ph3n Posted June 15, 2009 Posted June 15, 2009 The F1s are excellent in the wet. Even when they let go I find them very progressive. A standardly setup WRX should always lose the front first unless you're doing some big weight transfer. pmac - are you running ARBs or anything else trick on the suspension?
pmacFTO Posted June 15, 2009 Author Posted June 15, 2009 Whiteline ARB is the only mod on the rear - the car has Tein springs too and Steve Whitson said altho they passed, the front shocks were needing replaced. Rears were leaking which is why I had him do them. Have had F1s on almost all my cars so not putting it down to them.
pmacFTO Posted July 22, 2009 Author Posted July 22, 2009 Did it again this morning but I ended up spinning a 360 after hitting the kerb and ended up with the back end on the embankment I feared bad damage but seem to have been lucky - especially as it was on a slip road up to the dual carriageway in Livingston Luckily only the tip of the exhaust is bent in and the rear bumper has been pushed up a bit where the exhaust must have gone up the way and has a few deep scratches too - the car has a real rally slag look now tho with foliage all over it and mud up the bumpers, bits of tree in the wheel rims!
RA Dunk Posted July 22, 2009 Posted July 22, 2009 there seems to be something well wrong with your set up dude, stick it into progrip or some place and let a pro have a look at it
sparky_sj04 Posted July 22, 2009 Posted July 22, 2009 Sorry to hear that mate! Couple of months ago I put two new RE0-70s on the back, the fronts still had a good bit of tread, but the car started feeling very understeery, even at quite low speed at junctions etc. Have since put them on the front and it's a lot better. I know some people say you should change all 4 at the same time on a 4wd.. but when they are wearing at different rates its becomes irrelevant anyway. Also in January this year I put the car in for it's 3-year service, and when I got it back it felt very strange and was oversteering a bit easier than it should have. To the point that I phoned the garage and queried what they had done. I even thought there was a problem with the diff, but it got better. They are strange machines at times! Hope you get it sorted soon mate..
StewartyBoy Posted July 22, 2009 Posted July 22, 2009 Either you have problems with tyres as said above, or a real problem with camber. Does the car have camber correction bolts on it? Eccentric cams are a worthwile addition...
kennyuk300 Posted July 22, 2009 Posted July 22, 2009 Bit of a fright then hope you are ok Cheers Kenny
pmacFTO Posted August 20, 2009 Author Posted August 20, 2009 Update again - had the alignment done at Pro Grip a few weeks back and camber was so far out he had to use camber bolts....all sorted? No, I don't think so as I felt a wee slip the other day and now I just don't trust my car - I need someone who knows how to drive it, get the back end out and correct it so they can tell if it's ok or not...it's driving me mad! I don't enjoy driving the car now as I am scared it's gonna bite me! I am going to get some Eagle F1s on the back too now as I am not sure what else it could be. Without it being driven by someone who can feel if there is a problem I won't know and I am not wanting to push it on a corner again only to find it lets go and I wreck it! lol Any rally drivers here? heh (actually, Spaceman! You could have a go and see what you think?)

I had that too (not a 360 just a back end wobble) after getting the rear anti roll bar fitted(was travelling at speed though!) but I have since had front arb and other suspension fitted so hopefully should be ok now, but you know your own car so it may feel ok to someone else. Hope you get it sorted and begin to enjoy the car again
Spaceman Posted August 20, 2009 Posted August 20, 2009 id be happy to give it a try is it stepping out in the dry bud?
pmacFTO Posted August 20, 2009 Author Posted August 20, 2009 id be happy to give it a try is it stepping out in the dry bud? Not really pushed it but it does seem a lot better in the dry...but in the wet - 30mph on a roundabout and it will twitch and I just don't trust it! I don't lift off or anything - it's steady speed.
terzo neil Posted August 20, 2009 Posted August 20, 2009 not managed to step the back out in either car, even with re-70's on the newage, but can get it to run wide on full throttle in the wet on the re-70's check for bushes being worn or hub bearing going

Could having the year-old Falkens on the rear and F1s (2 months old) on the front be a contributing factor or is it not likely? Edited August 20, 2009 by pmacFTO
terzo neil Posted August 20, 2009 Posted August 20, 2009 both steve and mot should have picked up at the time of work mot is only good at time of test

pmacFTO Posted August 20, 2009 Author Posted August 20, 2009 (edited) Ok, I just didn't want to shell out for the F1s then find out it was not that and end up paying even more to fix a.n. other issue! I am selling the car soon but can't have it driving like this in case a test driver crashes it lol! Cheers for advice. Time for a visit to our friendly SIDC'er down at Kwik Fit in Broxburn Got a good deal from him for the F1s last time. Greg - you are welcome to have a spin and see what u think m8. I could even pop thru to you one day as I am in Broxburn so just a quick trip up the M9. Edited August 20, 2009 by pmacFTO
