Track Car Project Thread - Eventually

Last weekend was the long trip up to Banff for the Boyndie sprint. This was the second trip north in as many weeks but it was the east coast this time but the weather was kind once again with Saturday being warm and sunny and Sunday dry but not just as warm but still very pleasant for this time of year.

The saturday started off with an interesting first practice came of the line and up the main straight car feeling good and pulling well, eased off and braked very early for the first corner, had a little nibble at the kerb and when i turned in wow 270 deg spin there was just no grip at all :D well at least i wasnt the only one as a few others obviously didnt take note and done exactly the same  . As the track heated up and the surface cleaned up the grip came back.

The sat timed runs all went well. I went out and done a time of 68.3 in the first timed run and was sat nicely in 2nd behind Davie Coutts in his EVO on 67.8 and Jim Gray in his Evo on 68.5. I was confident of getting into the 67's on the 2nd timed run when it was pointed out to me that a decent score on Sat and Sun would see me win Class A3 in the Scottish Championship then the game plan changed as I had to score on Sun. I decided to take it easy on the 2nd run and have a look at lines etc for the Sun and just make sure i didnt break anything. After the 2nd timed runs I was pushed down into 3rd behind Jim and Davie which was fine as I had taken 28.23 points from the sat and that was more important.

The Sun morning practice runs were a good opportunity to play around a bit with some of the corners and try cutting various corners to see the effect on the car and on the lines. This proved to be very useful as I went out in the first timed run and done a 67.38 sec run which is 1.2 secs off the class record and significantly faster than last year. More importantly this gave me a healthy 29.15 points and the class win on the day and overall class win in the Scottish Championship - result :rotfl:

Well that was my last event of the year so time now to take stock and try and plan for next year. With all the changes to the class requirements for next year it will be a case of putting weight on rather than taking weight off which just doesnt seem right :D

I now have the basis of a car that can compete. First new part for next year arrived on Fri B)

Pity John it was a good weekend with a few close battles going on for various classes and the overall sprint championship. Would have been good to have a chat.

A3 was interesting with Davie Coutts going really well along with Jim Gray, all in all a good few days.

Not much more to report at this stage, its now a process of working out how far I can push the car forward for next year as well as sourcing the parts I need to achieve this. I have managed to source some already so may start stripping some parts off :D and fitting some others back in

Well done on the award last night Arch.

Hope the head wasn't too sore this morning :madnoel:

Thanks Stephen must admit I did suffer a bit yesterday was a good night and good to have a chat.

Good haul for Paul, Graham and Jennifer so well happy for them

Couldnt have achieved anything over the last two years without the help and support from John St  but shouldnt say anything in public as his head is far to big as it is ;) also big thanks to John McG for constantly dropping everything to help out and Graham Bremner and Davie Reid for constant advice and ridicule in equal proportions :D also Alyn at AS Performance, Andy F and John at progrip for so much help

Next year will be really interesting with the changes to the road car classes which hopefully will mean a much more open competition.

Peter on the case ;)

And everyone is safe not out of the country yet well in Exeter, which is almost France but not working on planes so your safe to travel this week :D

So is it, interior back in for the road class, or fully stripped out for modified next year, Archie?

That would be telling john

Just spent the most of the day gradually reading through your thread Arch. What a superb read. You must obviously have some sort of engineering back ground because I wouldn't dare take apart a gearbox and rebuild it myself.

You have seriously temepted me into turning the RB5 into sprint orientated. Now to apply for the licence.

What are the various classes and how are they decided?

Also noticed I have to join a club where is the one most local to me as im local to Perth

The classes for the Impreza's are pretty much determined by what you do to the car. if the car remains road legal and is not stripped out etc it would be entered in Class A3 but if you stripped it out and extensively modified it then it would probably run in the modified B3 class. That is a bit simplistic but where you place your car really depends on what you want to do to it. There are a lot of rule changes happening this year which will see some cars become inelligible for for A1, A2 and A3 due to the modifications carried out.

The club you join is not necessarily determined by where you live but by what you want from your club. There are a number of excellent clubs in the central belt like East ayrshire car club, Monklands car club and Lothian car club. Further north you have ADMC, GAC and Caithness car club.

As anyone who has competed in the championships will tell you this is not a cheap hobby. With travel costs, entry fees and accomodation costs never mind the cost of building and maintaining the car, helmet, race suit etc etc it is something that you need to properly research before diving in and pulling your car to bits.

If you do decide to do it there are plenty of people around to help and advise

Archie is right, it is not cheap but you can do it without spending thousands.

You don't need to do a championship, you can do individual events and you can use a standard car.

You do have to get the license, club membership and safety gear (helmet, overalls, gloves) though.
