neill54 Posted January 6, 2008 Posted January 6, 2008 been searching all morning for a straight answer but nothing what should i put in it again its a 92 wrx with 90k help? neil
euan_r Posted January 6, 2008 Posted January 6, 2008 10/40 semi is what i use, no track use, standard power. go for semi on that mileage.
scientific steve Posted January 6, 2008 Posted January 6, 2008 was thinking that on that age and miles that the 10/60 could be a wee bit too heavy on the oil pump and the like me, i would stick to the 10/40 unless things have been upgraded
boris b Posted January 6, 2008 Posted January 6, 2008 It was 10/40 semi i put in mines.... That was after asking for advice on here when i first got the turbo
scouk Posted January 6, 2008 Posted January 6, 2008 I'm defiantely in the minority when it comes to what oil people are using.. 5w/40 Silkolene Pro S here.. After reccomendation from opieoils.co.uk
turbohippy Posted January 6, 2008 Posted January 6, 2008 Castrol recommend edge sport 10/w60 or magnatec 10/w40 as an alternative
neill54 Posted January 7, 2008 Author Posted January 7, 2008 cheers guys i got 15/40 for it after eventually reading somewhere about the cold weather effect etc just need to fix the exhaust and fix the fog light and its ready for its mot!! neil
scouk Posted January 7, 2008 Posted January 7, 2008 Ok... it's time for me to ask a stupid questin... Stupid because I already know the answer, but I also don't know the answer.. Confused? i am.. Why is it that most people are recommending 10/40 oil yet I was recommended 5/40? I'm not critisising the advice I was given, I just want to know what makes the difference why is the 10/40 prefered here? (I've read all the bumf about the oil gradings but clearly I'm still confused) We get some pretty cold weather here in the north of scotand at this time of year... Am I likely to be getting a perfomance drop/causing harm with the low winter rating? basic Idiots guide please

Thus, it would seem that the thicker does not provide better performance as such, but provides protection when driving at performance levels. I too was recommended 5/40 but these guides are looking at everyday regualr driving. But let's be honest, who drives an Impreza like that 100% of the time? So it is better to have the thicker oil thus providing a greater safety margin when the urge takes us to go a little crazy once in a while I'm an idiot, so that is pretty much an idiot's understanding of it. I'm sure some technically, sound and knowledgeable mind will come along soon and set me straight. Edited January 8, 2008 by TheWelsho
