mctwistuk Posted October 21, 2007 Posted October 21, 2007 I have now been away from owning an impreza since February this year and am hoping to get another one soon but my dilema is what do i get. Do i go for a new hawkeye WRX (how can i give up a bargain of £14k for one) or do i go for say a blobeye STI. The STI i would be looking for with PPP to get my by for a wee while without modding but the WRX i think i would want to mod pretty much straight away but then there is the whole warranty thing with it being a new car. I am looking for either in black or silver.
drb5 Posted October 21, 2007 Posted October 21, 2007 If i were you......Hawkeye WRX. Drop in some nice pistons, add some heat studs and new head gaskets. Whack a MD321T, but keep the boost low. 400/400 is easy stuff, although with a low rev limit and you'll have a VERY cheap, awesomely capable road car...........................sweeeeeeeeeeeet.

Yes the 2.5 are great but is the WRX 2.5 different to a STI 2.5?...i think there maybe is. A STI is a better base with the better brakes, suspension and drivetrain. So what would i pick......? 2.5 STI m8
STi_Bandit Posted October 21, 2007 Posted October 21, 2007 Lol shame you weren't looking for a WR Blue one mate
jimser Posted October 21, 2007 Posted October 21, 2007 chris, buy the 1 with the 5 speed gearbox we all know there the best jim

Chris, I spent about £1500 for a 2nd hand VF34, a custom made sport's cat and remap and got 340bhp with 390ft/lbs. PPP on an STI wouldn't even give you that. Hawkeye all the way mate, for the looks and the 2.5. Trouble is, mine's lasted 4 days before I popped a piston (well, ring). Car still runs and is very drivable, but as soon as I press the GO pedal, the car holds back in low revs. I am going to drop in the forged pistons and go for bigger brakes with an STi topmount and I'll be looking at an easy 400/400 with standard injectors. Just hope it doesn't go pop again! Good to see you're coming back! J

terzo neil Posted October 21, 2007 Posted October 21, 2007 John how do you know you popped a ring/piston on my first turbo engine in my other car i popped a piston and ring as you can see well mullered and this was only on 7psi of boost, and it smoked like it was on 100 a day on the strongest cuban cigars ended up getting this forged made custom pistons complete with gapless rings from the states designed to suit my engine and drop compression down to 7:1 for my sprint car
thewelsho Posted October 21, 2007 Posted October 21, 2007 Neil AndyF and Dunc at Hypertech both think that that is the damage. Not so much a piston, but the piston ring-land. I also go a compression test done the other day and it showed 145/145/135/90. The nsr cylinder is the offending one and clearly point to ring-land damage. Every other conceivable check has been carried out. John

John the piston ring land is the grooves in the piston, so any bits of metal that has come of the piston could be trapped in the rings causing massive grooves all around the bore as the bits can move in the ring me personally would not even start the engine or attempt to drive it anywhere, get the offending side dismantled for a bore inspection, if badly damaged, you could be looking an 1 half of a block to be renewed

Great news!!!! I called AndyF the day I got the test done and he was surprised that the compression test didn't show lower than it did and then suggested that the damage is minimal. I'm trying to get it done asap, waiting on quotes.
sti pretender Posted October 21, 2007 Posted October 21, 2007 Chris, Go for the a Blobeye STI with PPP. I'm 329/310 with no boost or meth. I know I could have got more for my money with mods and an AndyF map but warranty was important to me. And silver is the best colour.

Being a brand new gearbox it will be fine(and has been known to be fine for a number of people running the same car, with near enough the same power) for long enough. I know how bad these boxes can be with plenty torque and i wouldn't have a problem buying a WRX to run 400/400. Sti defo looks better though.

lok-stock Posted October 21, 2007 Posted October 21, 2007 For what it's worth here is my view,I have had 5 Impreza's now starting from a 2.0 GX sport,WRX's to a My06 STi, I traded the STI because I thought it was really hard work. So in short the I had the best looking & best performing Scoob however I thought hard to live with in every day life. I traded the STI, 1 year after purchasing in April this year and bought an A3 ,After 4 months driving a new Audi A3 I traded that for a new 2.5 Hawk Eye in white and I have to say that has been good for me. One of the old salesman @ Town & County always said to me that the best Impreza was a WRX with a PPP. Food for thought. Happy hunting. Cheers. Rob.
st3ph3n Posted October 21, 2007 Posted October 21, 2007 Chris - drb5 speaketh the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. He's describing legalised insanity, and I like it.
oobster Posted October 21, 2007 Posted October 21, 2007 Chris - you don't fancy a nice red blobeye WRX do you? Strictly speaking it's not for sale at the moment, but in reality everything is for sale if the price is right!
drb5 Posted October 22, 2007 Posted October 22, 2007 Lol at Stephen and Oobster has hit the nail on the head there! Anything can be for sale at the right price....even my P1 if you were interested. B)
