mrbadger Posted September 8, 2007 Posted September 8, 2007 Anyone had any experience of fitting an STI v8 TMIC to a MY98? I've seen it can be done with a lot of extra work (post on SNet). I'm open to opinions before I dive in.

Seen one for sale that had had a chunk cut out to clear something, possibly the clutch cylinder ??? so presume its not a straight forward job. Looked into doing the same on my 95 and was told not enough room and better with a front mount. Think you would also need to change the splitter/seal on ur scoop. Steve
nanaki Posted September 9, 2007 Posted September 9, 2007 I'm sure there is a guide on doing this on the scoobynet forums. I've seen it before. It is possible but its not a simple fit. You need to grind / hammer away at the bit underneath the inter cooler on the chassis to give the new larger one some room as I recall. Will also need to make custom brackets to mount it and get the correct hoses to make it fit. Best person to ask would be squirrel. I know he has actually done this on a car before so he should be able to give you some insight as to the hell you are about to have.

Oh and thanks for the wee run the other night. http://bbs.scoobynet.com/projects-40/61223...hase-1-5-a.html
WUZ Posted September 9, 2007 Posted September 9, 2007 Done 3 so far and they aren't as bad as you might think, it just takes time! Russell

The more I look into it, the more I think that I'm just going to try and get an STI v5 TMIC. The threads I'd looked at about STIv8 TMIC were here:- http://bbs.scoobynet.com/general-technical...ic-wrx-how.html http://bbs.scoobynet.com/projects-40/39009...ne-started.html It really does seem like too much hard work and I would be amply cooled on my little turbo. If I change to a 2.5 engine and a bigger turbo at a later date I'll prob go for a FMIC. Until then, I'll try and get a STIv5 TMIC. Seafar you don't want to swap TMIC's do you? lol Edited September 9, 2007 by MrBadger
mrbadger Posted September 10, 2007 Author Posted September 10, 2007 Anyone know how difficult fitting an STIv5 TMIC into a MY98UK car is?

nanaki Posted September 10, 2007 Posted September 10, 2007 yep straight swap for an STI 5 into the 98,99 and 00 classics (done it on my 00 as has ally-b and several others)

mrbadger Posted September 11, 2007 Author Posted September 11, 2007 I'm looking for a bit of safety, not really that bothered about powergains. Wouldn't it need to be mapped again for Nanaki to see any power gains?
nanaki Posted September 11, 2007 Posted September 11, 2007 (edited) actually its never been to crail since i swapped it out however getting all 4 wheels pointing one direction is the biggest issue right now regarding drag times (car is pulling to the left and ive had the tracking checked) my car has never been mapped, not modified enough to merit it (plus im skint and keep having to spend my money on repairs) Edited September 11, 2007 by Nanaki

Russell Wuz if there is a problem with it fitting onto an MY 98 then please correct me however i was under the impressions it was a straight swap. If something is in the way or it needs an adapter then tell us please. I have no idea what an ISCV is for a start.
ally-b Posted September 11, 2007 Posted September 11, 2007 It depends on whether the '98 is a 'face-lift' model or not. Fitting an sti5 'cooler to the earlier ones is a palavar , as Wus points out. But fitting to a 'face-lift' 99/00 model is a straight swap - bit 'o bun HTH , Al.

The coil pack is in the center and not to one side. I guess this means I'm going to have a nightmare! I reallly haven't got a clue - I think I made a decision and then I change it! Top mount, STIv5, STIv8 or FMIC? The turbo I use is a TD04 Hybrid. Where is the Squirrel when you need him! Edited September 11, 2007 by MrBadger
colin_ross Posted September 11, 2007 Posted September 11, 2007 How much power are you hoping to run through it?
mrbadger Posted September 11, 2007 Author Posted September 11, 2007 Playsatan2 said: How much power are you hoping to run through it? If it's a TMIC about 310-320bhp. I know AndyF runs a STI8 TMIC up above 450bhp and the Type25 runs at 410 with the same STI8 topmount. If I get an STIv5 TMIC I know it'll probably limit me to less than 350bhp safely. If it's FMIC about 310-320bhp in the short term, but more room for the future. It's going to take me a long time to save for a 400bhp+ 2.5L engine, bigger turbo and stronger box and injectors. Why do all the Subaru rally cars have FMIC's? I'm really confused as I can see good points in all intercoolers.

Playing rFactor At the moment a Version 4/5 Cooler will suffice but if you plan larger turbo then front mount will be the answer

If you are wanting to get 400+ at any point during your ownership of the car I personally would buy a fmic. They've never been so cheap and will be less/same hassle to fit as a newage sti tmic. If you only want 320 ~ 350 tm all the way.

My wife is still recovering from shock about the last round of mods
