  1. Cheers guys. I am actually a bit further forward than I've written about so far, but I'll get typing as quickly as I can. I was in 2 minds about selling this car too, but what I would get as a trade-in wouldn't be much, and it's too good a base car to just sell. I've already weighed the car at 1430kg full of fuel. I think that's about 30kg less than the UK bug-eye, but still 50kg more than a Spec-C. I've got plenty of idea from doing my classic track car, so we'll see where it end up. Davy
  2. It’s been a couple of months now since I sold my Impreza WRX ra track car, so I thought it was time to start on a new project. Realistically I’d taken the WRX as far as was sensible to go with it. It went pretty well, handled brilliantly, and had somewhere in the region of 300-320 bhp. The problem I now had was if I wanted to take it to the next level it was going to cost a fair amount. 400 bhp would be nice figure, but it was only a WRX and not the STi model. So a replacement STi or a forged built engine together with a stronger gearbox would be needed. Add on bigger injectors, bigger turbo, mapable ECU, and I was looking at a bill of more than £5000………………… I don’t think so, not on a 15 year old car anyway. So when I was asked to name my price for it, I did and it was sold, with a nice profit too. As well as owning the white WRX classic, I also own a blue new-age JDM STi. This was more or less my everyday road car, with a few track days thrown in too. I imported it new back in 2002 when the yen / pound made it worthwhile, and being the JDM STi it came with more power than the UK version. 330 bhp after a few very basic mods. Converting this STi to a track car made a lot more sense. Being the bug-eye JDM model meant it came with the rarer forged piston engine rather than the hypereutectic UK engine, and closer ratio JDM 6 speed gearbox, both capable of 450bhp ish. I had already done some back to back testing with the 2 cars and knew the WRX was slightly quicker at lower speeds – probably due to its lighter weight, but at higher speeds there was really nothing in it. Both cars have also lapped Knockhill in the 60-61 sec bracket in the past. Power / weight calculations showed that an extra 50 bhp from the STi would compensate for it’s extra weight. But I was looking for a bit more than that. An extra 100+ bhp, combined with a 100 kg weight loss was the new target. More later, Davy

  4. The Clashindarroch stages are so long that they can be used in multiple combinations of stage start and stops, not including reverse runnings. Last year the Speyside stages used it for 2 runnings, this year it also had 2 runnings. All 4 stages were different. Learning the stages would be nigh on impossible for a part time rally driver. Running 1st on the road, Munro's accident would either have stopped the stage or spectators / co-driver would have slowed on coming cars down. This would maybe explain no other accidents. Maybe someone on here can confirm this. But being a non-International rally there is no recceing (spelling) of the stages, so the only option is to buy the pace notes, and these would be available in various formats. I don't agree with this case going to court, but if your running at a pace to win the rally your not holding back, and if those notes are not correct - it could have ended up in a more serious accident not just to the driver but to spectators too.
  5. Strange one this. I read about this in todays Record too. But in that paper it states in, 2004 the corner was descibed at 40deg, but in 2001 the same corner was a 70 deg (much tighter). So was it a mistake in the notes. Also strange that he was the only one to crash, but then again not everyone would take the notes in the same format.
  6. Fitted the knocklink today. Used the box lid as a template to drill the holes at the top of the binacle. Then using a small hacksaw, cut 5mm of the box height, and opened up the size of the 5 led holes. Closed up the box again. This allows the 5 led's to protrude more out of the original box. With some double sided tape stuck the box to the top of the binacle with the led's sticking through just the right amount. Thanks to Playsatan2 for the ideas.
  7. Opened up the box earlier, Playsatan's way is totally straight forward. I'll remove the binacle tomorrow and see if there's enough space, it being a new-age.
  8. I like that idea a lot, inside the binacle. Playsatan, one of the posts on Scoobynet used normal wiring, another a strip of computer ribbon, what did you use? I liked the idea of the ribbon, keeps it tidy even if it won't be seen.

  11. When I sold the track car, I kept hold of the knocklink. Now I'm going to be tracking my New-age STi, I want to build the knocklink into the dash rather than having the ugly black box on show. So has anyone rewired the lights into the dash, and any tips. Davy

  14. Can't believe you were there yesterday, if I'd known that I'd have brought your new bonnet scoop with me. I wasn't out on track though, 99% ready, but not there yet. See you tomorrow though.

  16. I was looking forward to this too. But I think for a World Class International event, supposed to be the showcase for the future of the WRC; to only have 6 - S2000 cars, borders on embarassing for the orgaisers. Not their fault though, maybe if the championship was still up for grabs. The total entry is 65. George, you'll well remember the Scottish Rally days when you took part having entries 3 times that.
  17. Genuine Subaru dealer ones now come with a 3 year warranty, but they also cost about £90 (before any discount). I bought a kit yesterday from Nobles. All depends on how often you want to do the job.

  20. I've got the Goodyear Asymetrics fitted to my STi. Superb. Better than the older Goodyear GSD3's I replaced, and miles ahead of Toyo T1R's. Give Ronnie from WheelsAround a shout. He supplied and fitted mine for cheaper than anyone else I could find. Maybe because I've known him for years from the SIDC trackdays at Knockhill, but worth a shout anyway.

Web-site is www.drmotorsport.co.uk Some reference points for you, your standard scoop has an opening height of 40mm and an overall height of 50mm Our taller STi 7 size scoop has an opening of 64mm and overall is 78mm high. And the forward facing STi 8 style is 74mm and 95mm high. We tried to keep the STi 7 scoops similar in style to the original scoop, but just made it taller - not everyone likes the STi 8 scoop. Obviously the more air you get onto the intercooler, the better it will perform. The STi 8 ones do perform the best and the forward facing design does capture the air better, so would be perfect for track days. David
  22. I wouldn't think you could get a new-age Hyperflow to fit a classic car. Fitted a hyperflow to a customers 2006 WRX last month, and it doesn't leave much space. Width is fine, depth was ok, but it was the extra thickness that made it tight. It's 3" thick, a good bit more than the STi 8 intercooler. It left no room for the strut brace to be refitted, and the original plan was to use a STi 8 undertray, but even that needed chopped to fit. For the hyperflow you will also need to buy the Y-piece and correct hoses. If you buy an STi 8, it will may/probably come with all that anyway. You could gain an extra few bhp, but whether the extra cost is worth it, that's up to you.
  23. The Version 3/4 STi intercooler does fit. I did this to my '94 WRX ra. It's not a straight swap though. The bov outlet at the front has to be welded up. It's easier to do on a later Version 5/6 or new-age intercooler, as you can just bolt on a blanking plate rather than welding it up. The rear engine mount needs a bit of triming so it doesn't hit the Y-area on the back of the intercooler. And due to space you may also need to trim 4-5mm from the front of the intercooler for the throttle body. You can see this from my photo how tight it is. I've got a customers WRX intercooler from a 2006 hawkeye here. It's slightly more compact, has a recess on the underside for the engine mount, and bolting a blanking plate will solve the front bov fixing. You can have that for about £60.

  25. WRX or STi TMIC shouldn't make any difference. I had a customers car mapped by Andy Forrest last Wednesday with a similar spec to what your doing. 2006 2.5 WRX with STi intercooler, VF34, decat, etc. Andy took it to 1.4 bar; 350bhp and 378 lb ft. Pulls like a train from just under 3000 RPM
