help with my project WRX

Right.

I may as well disclose my plans now so that i can get some advice.

I am going to be taking my standard WRX blobeye and fitting the list below: -

18g turbo

STI pink injectors

Walbro fuel pump

APS CAI 65mm

knocklink

lambdalink

defi BF oil pressure, oil temperature and boost gauges

decatted up pipe

boost controller

ECUTEK remap hopefully by the master Mr Andy F

Now what i am looking for some advice on is do i need anything else to keep it reliable and also do i fork out money for a sportcat downpipe or leave it with the standard one or fit a decat downpipe or fit a decat downpipe and put the centre cat back in?

I know you will all say decat everything but i would rather keep one cat in place.  I can live with not getting the extra 10bhp.

give me your suggestions

cheers

chris

Are you going to be keeping the standard intercooler? That might be a bottleneck. Jimser and Craigwrx are attempting similar things to you. Jim has gone for a VF34 turbo on Andy F's recommendation I think. He got it off  ebay

i was hoping to keep the standard intercooler but not sure.

i am not aiming for massive power.  if i can get 300ish i will be happy.  this is my everyday car so not wanting to do to much to it.

Are you getting a water temp gauge aswell .Better to ask Andy if you need a boost controller and it's up to you if you go sportscat or decat but do one or the other .But do away with the standard downpipe .Just a pain come mot time changing back to the standard downpipe for emissions test and is there much difference with sti intercooler to the wrx one??

well would keeping the centre cat and changing to a decat downpipe be a compromise?

i would also be interested to know if the STI intercooler will make much difference.  Am only aiming for 330 ish bhp.

yeah but the 18g is a good turbo well when i say 300ish i mean 320-330bhp lol.

i want something special.

what are your thoughts on manual boost controller and lambdalink Steven?  Are they worth fitting?

I am aiming for similar power with the wife's WRX (currently PPP) or slightly more and my planned mod's were

H&S sports cat downpipe, replacing the primary/pre-cat in the up-pipe witha straight through section (the last cat has already been removed as part of the PPP), an Andy-F modified TD04 (excellent spool-up giving superb in-gear times), a newage STi intercooler and finally a remap by the affore-mentioned man. A STi fuel-pump and injectors will also be sourced (A fuel pump was sourced but ended up on my GT-:(.

I read an article in the last ScoobyMag by Andy that had been his WRX based on a similar spec, and IIRC, it was producing approx 320bhp and was giving some startling performance figures.

I have sent the master Andy F an email but would be interested to hear other people's views on whether i need STI topmount intercooler and if i should go for sportcat downpipe or decat downpipe and keep centre section cat.

Upgraded intercooler would be a must have, 18g turbo is over the top for the performance gains u will get from them mods, so why introduce more lag than is necessary, unless of course you have future plans ..

Absolutely agree on both counts. This is why I'm asking Andy F for both a Turbo and a re-map (well I will on the 22/04/07 - the day after the warranty runs out!!!)

I've a VF35 turbo for sale and it will give you the performance gain your after [:(]

Agree, with the mods in question this would be an ideal turbo.

Hi Chris,

I am running almst exactly the same mods as yourself and you'll see by the signature below that it'll easily get you the 330bhp you're after.  I'm running an STi TMIC and a de-cat pipe.

What I will say though is that with a decat and the APS CAI, the car will be VERY, VERY loud.  I thought it would be a good thing (and secretly I still do [:(] ) but I'm pretty sure the neighbours don't agree!![:D]  Something worth bearing in mind...

Good luck with whatever you go for anyway mate.

A decat doesn't need to be loud and an induction kit is only loud when your booting it and coming off throttle.

Turbo choice is your own thing, but personally, i'll keep away from VF turbo's. Don't get me wrong, they are good, but they break up all too easily and to me, then engine is worth a lot more in one piece, than putting one of them on. I WOULD agree however, the TD04 hybrid is defo another option...

I'll talk to you again on MSN Chris, later on.

Just when i thought i had all my list of mods finalised.

looks like it will be a sportcat by the sounds of it.

Is the knocklink needed on a newage?  Can anyone help?

Posted

AndyF himself reccommends a IHI VF34 if you want a quick spool up 320bhp ish.

The newage has a built in knock sensor and if your car is mapped correctly,i don't think it's needed.

I only think a knocklink is needed when you've fitted decat, cai and other things but not remapped your car just so that you can back off the gas when det occurs.

not knowing much about turbos i am lookign for as much help with this as possible.

I am not going to be taking the car on track so a wee bit of turbo lag is fine.  I may also transport the turbo to the next car.

I am looking for reliability in the end as this is my only means of transport.

Every scoob has a knock detector fitted as standard, but if you want to see if there IS any det, then i would strongly suggest fitting one. I don't think any owner shouldn't have one fitted, even if they have a PFC with commandefr, as you simply can't see the screen properly, especially when it's bright daylight...

now i am stuck over CAI or somehting like the RCM K&N induction kit.  One thing that does make me wary of the CAI is the fact it is so close to the road and if there is a lot of surface water or deep puddles (lets all face it we live in Scotland and this is normal) then would this be a problem.  the K&N is inside the engine bay and when driving it should get all the cold air it needs.  I am not going to be doing Crail or anything or going on track.

So now i need to investigate CAI or K&N and also 18g or something else????????  Oh my head hurts.

The lag i am not too bothered about on the 18g, it would give me options for modding later on if i feel like it.

No one with a new age has mentioned having a knocklink fitted yet.  Does anyone have one fitted?  If not then the £11o ish pound could go towards something else.
