sti pretender Posted September 26, 2006 Posted September 26, 2006 Just picked up my new STI today and looking to keep the car maintained as best possible. Still running it in and will warm up and cool a down as noted in the FAQ's, but was wondering what oil members have found best and how regularly they change it.
st3ph3n Posted September 26, 2006 Posted September 26, 2006 Is Millers 10w60 still the choice? Or was it 15w50? I can never remember. I need a change pre-knockhill.
craig mac Posted September 26, 2006 Posted September 26, 2006 Millers 10w60 for me m8, And with my mods it will be changed every 3k Craig
dave_morgan Posted September 26, 2006 Posted September 26, 2006 Always used Motul 300V myslef, which is 15/50. HTH Dave
dave_morgan Posted September 26, 2006 Posted September 26, 2006 Some good offers on here : http://www.opieoils.co.uk/performance_lubricants/motul.aspx
~ ~ Cal ~~ Posted September 27, 2006 Posted September 27, 2006 Always used Motul 300V myslef, which is 15/50. Same for me.........if it's good enough for Andy F's (ex) buggy it's good enough for me. He was very impressed and was almost as pure as the driven snaw even after some hard driving. It also smells nice too. Almost banana like [] Cal
cusco kid Posted September 27, 2006 Posted September 27, 2006 hi mate i use longtec 0-w -30 low ash oil in my new age uk 300 and change it every 1500 miles its fully synt -filter -3000 miles
thefastone Posted September 27, 2006 Posted September 27, 2006 So I take it that GTX magnatec is not that great then perhaps? thats what I was useing before on the shed, And I think the new car has been using that up untilll now.... dunno whats in it just now tho.... I admit its not something that Ive given much thought to like...
scientific steve Posted September 27, 2006 Posted September 27, 2006 another one for millers 10 w 60 and changed after last knockers trip just happened to be about the 3000 mile mark []
WUZ Posted September 27, 2006 Posted September 27, 2006 10W/60 for hard-used cars (trackdays, etc) and 10W/40 for more road-based carsie, day-to-day runners with minor abuse. NEVER USEA 0W oil like Mobil1........BAD NEWS ON A SCOOB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Too thin a cold viscosity! Whatever it is, make sure it is fully synthetic. I only supply and use Millers 10W/40, 10W/60 or Motul 330v 15W/50 (use this in my car and its VERY GOOD) Russell ( always have at least 20 litres of each of the above "in stock" at all times)
sti pretender Posted September 27, 2006 Author Posted September 27, 2006 Thanks for all the advice. Day-to-day running and minor abuse planned but that will probably change once I get over the 1000 mile and see what the car can really do.
st3ph3n Posted September 27, 2006 Posted September 27, 2006 Probably change?!?!?! You need to or you'll have trouble as it's running some really thick stuff to start with I think.
cusco kid Posted September 28, 2006 Posted September 28, 2006 hi wuz i was recomended longtec -what price for these oils thanks geo +we use it in our track car ,changed after every event
wrxmania Posted September 28, 2006 Posted September 28, 2006 10w/40 for me - recommended by Oilman (use Silkolene Pro S) and used by Subaru (Shell Helix normally). The 60 is for harder driven, heavily modified cars I have been told. Brian []
amsoil Posted September 28, 2006 Posted September 28, 2006 10w/40 for me - recommended by Oilman (use Silkolene Pro S) and used by Subaru (Shell Helix normally). The 60 is for harder driven, heavily modified cars I have been told. Brian [] A 60 weight oil is for drag cars that dump so much fuel into the sump that they need such a thick oil to start with so they have got something left at the end to lubricate. Same applies with seriously Webbered cars like Ferarri 512's and lastly to real dinosaur motor bikes like Harley flat and knuckle heads. I know some of you chaps are using this stuff but why? You will be loosing substantial amounts of power to pumping losses and the extra heat this generates will not only cause the car to run hotter than necessary but the extra heat will thin out the 'thick' oil so you could be back where you started from Better to be a bit thinner and cooler? N.B. Race cars now run the lastest 30 weight oils and actually qualify on a 20 weight!!
david_taylor Posted September 29, 2006 Posted September 29, 2006 Glad this thread came on! I usually put Motul 330v 15W/50 in the engine, but I could not get any for last Monday, when the car was getting serviced. Popped into Halfords and checked their book to see what they advised. Mobil 1 0w-40. So thats whats in the car When I see this yesterday, got really worried. Called Duncan @ Hypertech, and he advised to get it changed asap. Gettin changed again on Monday. So thats £45 down for the Mobil one and now the 6 litres of Motul and the new filter! Great! Think I might pop in and chin Halfords tomorrow!
Oilman Posted October 16, 2006 Posted October 16, 2006 Unless the car is extremely modded, a 5w-40 is what we recommend for post 2000 scoobs. Modifications can mean the requirement for heavier oils especially if they are tracked in which case we recommend a 10w-50 or 15w-50. Cheers Simon
hammy Posted October 16, 2006 Posted October 16, 2006 as the oilman says 5-40w thats what i have been using
frank c Posted October 16, 2006 Posted October 16, 2006 I am using 5w-40 for the winter then bought some 10w-50 for the summer and have now been advised to use 10w-40..It's all a bit cofusing Frank
dipsy Posted October 16, 2006 Posted October 16, 2006 I am going to get my oil and filter changed and go for 10/40 oil this time
wrxmania Posted October 17, 2006 Posted October 17, 2006 I have 5w/40 Silkolene Pro S in my car just now []
st3ph3n Posted October 17, 2006 Posted October 17, 2006 Peter - whatever greers put in for you is the right stuff.
