I was speaking to Colin at Greersport and this is what he said whilst out mapping with the GEMS ECU in a classic with a TD05 turbo rally car"this turbo is pish and laggy as hell.....should have put the IHI VF 29 in instead.....will need a remap when the IHI goes in..."

This comment is about a standard TD 05 and not a 16g , 18 g or 20g.

You make your own mind up m8.

a standard TD05 is a 16g and they are not laggy at all. try a 20g on a non-sti valvetrain with a fmic and then see what laggy really is!

ok cheers for the reply's so far guy's ;)

here's what i have so far

1999 turbo 2000 remapped to 260 bhp and 266lb/ft by previous owner !!

full decat /green panel filter

i have got a walbro to fit hopefully tomorrow  also the intercooler i got from ricey will hopefully be fully modded enough to go on tomorrow and after that as far as i am aware all i need is a turbo and a remap ??

if so i have found that the ihi turbo's are much easier to source than the td05's

my only remaining q is what ihi vf series turbo do i need ??

cheers guy's !!

The vf 28's and 24's are popular upgrades but I wouldn't recommend one without knowing what your goals are with the car and how hard you want to push.  TD's are generally tougher but there is a trade off in performance with some. As mentioned if you go for a td05 it will probably need converted to front entry to suit a 99/00 and if doing that you can spec the turbo more to your liking.

You would have been better with a classic sti intercooler imho.

well basically all i want is 300 /300 if possible with those mods ? is it possible ??

Davie - for what it's worth, I own an MY2000 UK Classic with 315/300. Mods are Revolution Decat, VF23 Turbo and an Andy Forrest Remap. Great gains for reasonable cash!! Rolling Road at Tegsport - Steve Simpson reckoned that the big difference was down to the VF23 (although he did admit that Andy was the man!). Last thing for me now is to put a Brembo brake conversion from a spec C (this Friday) so it stops as well as it goes!

I would think a VF28 would do 300bhp without stressing itself, however, I'm not so sure you'll reach your torque figure... but I could be incorrect, best thing to do would be to give Andy F a call and discuss your goals with him. He's sure to keep you right. [;)]

yeah ..... see the thing with that is .......its kinda like phonin god up and askin can you give me an extra donger !! you really want it but you are afraid to ask !!

LOL!! Thats probably the weirdest way I've ever heard someone describe a phonecall to Andy F....... [;)]

Go for it mate, I've chatted to Andy before.. he's more than willing to give advice and ideas about the way to reach your own goals.

Cheers,

At the end of the day Andy is just a Subaru Tuner (albeit one of the best). He makes his money from us, so will be happy to offer advice, especially if it means you'll become a customer somewhere down the line [;)]

I thought I'd be nervous when he was mapping my car, but I was surprised just how relaxed I was. Like driving your mate to the pub.....albeit very quickly at times [:o]

The probelm with the VF turbo's is that they will not take big boost. They tend to self destruct. TD05's are not hard that hard to find imho are the better turbo's because of the abuse you can throw at them. A good TD05FE should get you anywhere between 320-340 bhp depending on other supporting mods.

My Vf 28 is running about 1.5 bar and has been foe quite a while, Wuz had if off for a look when he fitted my downpipe and said it was in good condition, no shaft play etc.  I have 320/310 on quite a safe map, so the vf28 can do the job with good response(STI 8 Topmount) I have seen them for around £100 on flebay
