fraser_allan Posted April 10, 2006 Posted April 10, 2006 Its a public forum, if its not what you like read threads that interest, I myself have never met Gumball, Wilky or Peter and i think they are great people because the help you if you are needing information about diferant things. My opinion anyway. SCOTTISH SCOOBIES AWAY!!!! Fraz.
AlanG Posted April 10, 2006 Posted April 10, 2006 I'm impartial here cause i'm not on very often, but is your thoughts on SS down to the fact that most threads relate to things going on in west coast? If so, then post up what's happening in your neck of the woods!. I think everybody would reply or interact if they felt things were relevant to them. Is it maybe because you can't relate to what's going on in the west coast that you feel there's a bias to the west? and so feel you're being "shoved out the road"? (don't know how else to put it)
frank c Posted April 10, 2006 Posted April 10, 2006 Good point Alan... I am also from the East and notice the West Coast and Central can be a busy place for meets and have more local garages and performance centres to aid in the modding process .. but we also have Knockhill , Crail and Andy F .so i suppose it's what you make of it .... I suppose it is also about how much we put into our local and surrounding regions and get off our backsides and put the effort in ...( Me Included).....[:$] I am also to blame ( as part of the East crowd) as i've put that much time and effort into modding my own car through the help of people on here( who i haven't met yet) Maybe it's about time i got off my own ar$e and got out and met and thanked the guys who make this Forum what it is. Roll on the Summer Weather. Don't blame the West....It's up to us to make the East better. Frank..................
wrxmania Posted April 10, 2006 Posted April 10, 2006 Well balanced post Frank - also in the East we have places like A F Nobles, Ian Grieve (if you want to class them as the East), Extreme Motorsport in Whitburn, the import places in Edinburgh, Dastek, Star Performance and anyone else I have forgotten about. Plus AWD, Wallace Performance etc further up north.. Brian []
AlanG Posted April 10, 2006 Posted April 10, 2006 I don't really see an east or west divide, yet you make a valid point in that in the east coast (correct me if i'm wrong), there are very few (Subaru) tuning establishments out there. I know there's guys out there dedicated to certain forums and all that jazz, i'm not really bothered, i just browse around popping in here and there and join in when something has caught my interest. That's not to say i don't like the guys or anything like that, it's more because i can't devote as much time as i would like to any one group of people (it's just the way my life is with a family and missus to look after etc). It would be different if i was single and this was my only vocation in life but it's not. Browsing around the forums and more specifically Scottish forums, i see most tuning companies talked about seem to be either over here in the West, or way up North in Aberdeen way, Perth etc. Nothing really in the East or Central belt, so maybe this is part of the problem?
MY94 Posted April 10, 2006 Posted April 10, 2006 QUESTION "Is it just me or does Scottish Scoobies seem just a home for a select few to express there opinions/ personal fan clubs?" ANSWER,it's just you mate as far as I can see, possibly mixed with time of year and winter blues. The only possible reason for a public posting rather than u dealing with this privately is that u want to stir things up? I'm not a friend of any of the people u mentioned, also I've never even been to the garages u mention, although I have found Gumball very helpful in the past and spoken to him on the phone, but we'd not recognise each other in the street.Likewise,I don't know you Coulster,so I'm expressing my own view from a neutral position. I see no point in your thread what so ever! However, like Switzerland I'm not going to throw my handbag out the window everytime I see a GOAT!
frank c Posted April 10, 2006 Posted April 10, 2006 Hi Alan, I don't see a divide between east or west either..Just because a certain crowd use certain garages to modify their cars and so because of this have alot to chat about to each other shouldn't mean that some people should feel left out or don't feel part of the IN crowd.. I also enjoy browsing the forums for ideas and some well needed advice . If it wasn't for some of the guys mentioned earlier and yourself (of course) I wouldn't have enjoyed or been able to improve my car and my limited knowledge.. Still not fitted my wheels (ST2's)..BTW.. so i'll need to send you some pics when my car is finished. Thanks again Frank.
dave_morgan Posted April 10, 2006 Posted April 10, 2006 I have to say, I can appreciate both sides of this arguement. There is a very 'cliquey' feel to SS now, I'd have to agree on that point. Some people like creating their own little private clubs within clubs - that's just life unfortunately. Not my cup of tea personally, but it's not likely to change, so I deal with it by ignoring it and reading something of interest instead - If people want to talk about their goat fetishes, fine. Personally I'd prefer it was kept to PM or SN muppet section, but I can ignore it and move on, as long as it doesn't get to a stage where every 2nd thread is being screwed up with drivel. I have to say I don't get as much enjoyment out of the club as I used to, but time's move on, people move on and hopefully it'll go full circle and come back to being more fun again at some point. The whole "Subaru Club" is growing, and I guess the end result of that is more potential for conflict between individuals as there are more individuals to conflict! I'm not giving up on it, as I still enjoy popping my head in here from time to time, but I do feel more of an 'outsider' than I used to. Perhaps that's just because I don't have as much time to post as I used to, or perhaps it's because I don't make as much time to post as I used to!! Another possibility I guess is that the age range of Subaru owners is constantly widening. When I got my first, it was pretty unusual for anyone in their 20's to have an impreza. Now, pretty much anyone can afford one, which throws another variable into the mix. It doesn't bother me, but it does mean that there's one less common constant to tie everyone together. I'm not being ageist, but people in their 40's, don't necessarily find certain things as funny as they would when they were 20. It doesn't make it wrong, but it does highlight another difference that is emerging. Again, another reason why there's potentially more conflicting opinions. On a final note, I don't believe it has anything to do with East/West, it's just coincidental that the cliques currently appear to be more west coast based than east. Perhaps it's due to population, perhaps it's just a west cost thing - I don't know and don't care quite frankly. What I do know is that I've made some good friends here over the years, so I'm going to stick around and see what happens. Once I get a bit less busy, I'll probably get involved in organising meets/events again at some level or another, but until then I'll try and support the ones that are going on and keep the club together. A bit more variety for the types of meets is perhaps what's required, but that all takes time, and that seems to be a scarce commodity in most peoples lifes these days. Kudos to the guys who make the time - you're keeping the club together which is great as far as I'm concerned. Don't know if I've added anythng to the thread, but there's a few opinions to chew on anyway. Dave
wrxmania Posted April 10, 2006 Posted April 10, 2006 Well said Dave - 'cos after Sunday you'll not be entitled to an opinion at home anymore [] [] LOL...
drb5 Posted April 10, 2006 Posted April 10, 2006 Fully agree with everything you said there, Dave! [H]
iain_spink Posted April 11, 2006 Posted April 11, 2006 Don't really see an east/west divide either, I think that there simply happens to be more members in that area who regularly post. I can sorta see where you're coming from but don't wholly agree with the way you've put some things. I think it was unfair to single out the individuals that you did as there are several more out there regularly posting similar stuff (pish or otherwise). Sure there are lots of 'in' jokes going on between certain members but so what? I actually find most of it quite amusing and would like it to continue. I would think differently if every new thread started was being 'hijacked' and turned into goat derived crap or whatever. I'm on pretty much every day, look at every thread and comment if I'm interested enough. As a complete newbie to Scoobie ownership (just bought my first one 3 months ago) I know very little or nothing about them, however I do find a lot of very useful and interesting stuff on the forums from time to time. Myself (and others?)obviously must like the mix of factual stuff, advice and general pish that is on the forums or we wouldn't be on here every night would we? It really depends on what you personally want from the club and how much you are willing to put into it. Finally, on the east/west thing again, I've been asking for a proper Tayside?Angus meet since I joined in December, but due to several reasons this has never happened and looks unlikely to do so. OK, fine I'll try the Fifers, I replied to the Fife Events thread and suggested that as they seemed to be struggling for numbers also, that they move their venue for meets (currently Dunfermline I think) to a location nearer Dundee/Angus with the intention being to boost numbers. Result? I didn't even get a reply or a comment!
wilky Posted April 11, 2006 Posted April 11, 2006 There are some very well constructed posts on this thread. I fully appreciate your comments Dave, and Abroath Smokie. There isnt an east west divide I enjoy attending both Edinburgh and Glasgow meets when time and sanity allow. We all choose who our friends are, who we like and who we dont like, 9 times out of 10 those you dislike actually turn out to be really nice people, and as we all sit here as keyboard warriors forming our own views and getting all opinionated or upset it takes a meet involving those parties or whoever to change mindsets. Unfortunatley in the past, coming from a very confrontational background I have had angry words with people only to discover later on what that person actually meant and that I actually like that person. I would like to take the time over the next few months to attend as many regional meets as I can in order to close a few chapters of nonsense, and also show off my newly discovered hair which alas is now diminising before i get the chance to enjoy it, lol. so i want you all to see it before its gone. [] With that in mind, to anyone Ive noised up, upset or openly abused, I apologise. This is a very unique club we have, with some great people and some very interesting cars. There isnt really cliques, just people who meet more regularly than others and who are better friends than others, I dont think we should confuse that, and I for my part will avoid giving this impression in the future. I like SIDC and i like all areas, Thanks for sharing it with me. Callum W
zeolite Posted April 11, 2006 Posted April 11, 2006 I nominate Wilky for the post of the year. [] Smokie...you will have a pm in a few mins.

mrs. jc scoob Posted April 11, 2006 Posted April 11, 2006 I dont really know anybody on this forum but when I had my wee accident I was overwhelmed by all the kind responses from people on here and I think that most of them were actually from the west coast,I mainly think that sometimes the humour may seem immatuure to older members but if this is the case its better just to ignore it as its not hurting anybody,I personally find it all quite amusing. On the November run I was made to feel welcome by most people,in particular Imy,Squirrel,Peter,Gumball and Sharon,I dont think its that there are cliques so much as Glaswegians are pretty outgoing people and its not always easy to include everyone so if you are a quiet person it might feel as if you are being overlooked, anyway that is just my opinion. []

scott_coull Posted April 11, 2006 Author Posted April 11, 2006 On reflection of the very constructive replies to my inititial rant/outburst I see that its just me, possibly one or two others who feels there is an east/west coast divide. I appreciate most of the points made and Im in no way criticising the very good efforts put in to organising events etc (which I have been part of) by these people. Peter you were the appreciation factor, which imho gets taken too far, not always you but you were an example I could make to stop the question of WHO?. If Ive offended you then Im sorry. The East/Fife region are very quiet and perhaps if I and other members made more of an effort then we could make things happen but there does not seem to be the interest, only a small number of people up for a meet, and to be honest if its to be 3 or 4 people turning upto a meet then I don't see the point. Also probably a matter of geographical location, not just a 15/20 min drive to get to other side of town which I think puts some people off? Jon get a Tayside meet organised as you seem to be the man up that neck of the woods [] An example of humour/banter at the bottom of the post, all light hearted and not about Goats (thankyou) but still it happens. I like a bit of banter aswell but also enjoy reading posts which are titled and interest me to find that a few replies later its turned into banter again. This is the point im trying to get accross. I dont read topics which don't interest me but you can't always avoid it if its a topic relevent to my interest to be turned into nonsense. And its the same people that seem to be doing it imho. If you take that to heart then im sorry. All imho. A few replies have not surprised me in the fact that people seem to agree on things but won't express their opinions and just put up with things they don't like. Part of a Forum I suppose but if we are all supposed to get along then I felt I should put accross my opinion in the hope that maybe some of the Goat banter be controlled to there own threads and make the awareness to other members who know its happening and also the people posting it know they are doing it and causing offense to others. Gumball etc you are'nt bad people imho but please calm down the goat banter...it's getting very tiring now. Scott
