32mph in a 30 - Aberdeen area -

colleague of mine in work has been booked by the Aberdeen Rozza's doing 32 in a 30 zone. Aberdeen.

Going from Top of Holburn St, down Great Southern Road and past Duthie park....& they were lying on the verge, and pulled him over for doing 32mph.

When he said he thought he had 10% leeway, their response was that was discretionary and they've stopped doing it.

Needless to say he's nae happy

Don;t know whether this is an official thing, or if it is just a one off, but defo one to watch for the rest of us.

Anyone else heard of similar?

ps - he doesn;t even drive a scooby - just some fairly tired old 4 x 4 jeep

Can't he say that he was doing 30 on his mph as I don't know if there are any mph in any car that are exact as you would need to calibrate your own mph 1 a year to keep them accurate and then it would still be questionable. That is what the 10percent was for in the past. They were just being a pain in the a** if you ask me face-icon-small-mad.gifface-icon-small-mad.gif

I agree with ScottySTI

There is a correction margin of +/- 10%

Challange the charge and take it to court, they will throw it out on those grounds in fact the Fiscal office will before it goes to court

My car to road angel reading has a difference of 4/5 mph and the car has less than 4k on the clock

Angel is more accurate and reads 70 mph and clock reads 75 mph.

Challange it without doubt

I always thought it was +10% for a warning +20% for a fine. But that's probably an urban legend.

Personally in a 30 zone I'll stick to 30. They're generally there for good reason.

I was done a few years back near calander at killmahog for doing 43 in a 40 zone just before it goes back to a national speed limit. I did try to fight the case but the police pointed out all speedo are designed to read high they will never read low unless tamped with or wrong tyres ect. so it it says 40 on your speedo you are doing about 37-38mph so mines said 45 and I was doing 43. Even using GPS my scooby says 70 and the gps says 66, my works corsa is worse at 70 the gps says 64. By the way I got 3 points and 30 fine from the sherrif in stirling for contesting it. Licence all clear now. and radar and gps coming out my ears now.

Sorry for your mate hes done.face-icon-small-sad.gif

Ed.

Ps. if you say you changed the tyre to diff aspect ratio they will pob just do you for breaking some other reg. it's a no win case.

Edited cause I am a numpty and put High and low back to front above.

I've seen them there a couple of times (both directions). They seem to be targeting the urban dual carrigeways lately (also seen them on North Esplanade West and Ellon Rd.).

I agree that 30 limits should normally be adhered to but targeting these particular roads and doing folk for 32mph is a joke. Another case of police shooting themselves in the foot as regards public relations. face-icon-small-sad.gif

If he was caught at 32mph then his speedo would have read 35mph

All cars by law must over read the speed by 10%, so if your speedo is saying 30mph bang on, your true speed will be 27mph or less. Indicated 70mph and true speed would be 63mph or less

I was nabbed a while back on the M74 with my foot on the floor reading an indicated 98mph. The VASCAR displayed that i was travelling at 88mph and a loverly wee pink ticket was produced for my efforts.

I might be getting older Chris. Or wiser. I can never tell. But 30 zones are something I've always been cautious of since I started driving. Except my first driving test where I was doing 40 in a 30. London road east bound just before the change from 30 to 40, and I wasn't even keeping up with traffic!

As far as speedo law - A car's speedo CANNOT under read (not over read as the people in my head said earlier) as far as I am aware. They are not allowed to over read by more than 10% either. The tolerance is built in to account for changes in tyre pressures etc. so that in a worst case scenario the speedo reads spot on.

It is true i am afraid Stephen

It is part of the Type Approval for new cars and also mentioned in the "Construction and Use" regulations.

GPS type equipment will give a reading approx 10% over the cars own speedo reading. GPS displays 63 - 64mph and the cars speedo displays 70mph

I understand what you are saying here st3ph3n, but come on, 2 mph is a fecking joke.

The point is that these twats obviously have bugger all else to do.

32 in a 30 is harshface-icon-small-mad.gif but I have to say I always get below the 30 on the speedo just to be on the safe side. Not worth the risk although, at that speed you will always get some twat sitting 3mm off yer rear bumper. Now that feckin annoys meface-icon-small-mad.gifface-icon-small-mad.gifface-icon-small-mad.gif

My mate got done the other week there and he was doing 73 in a 70 just outside inverness. He asked about the 10% and he was told that no longer applies.

The Police said that cars speedos and the guns are that accurate these days they dont do the 10% anymore.
