~ ~ Cal ~~ Posted October 13, 2005 Posted October 13, 2005 Scenario :- - Weather - the WORST ???floodin' in the East - Arrival @ Port Seton ? 0700 hrs ( 2 hrs early !! I was keen to avoid traffic but overestimated, sought Optimax & fodder, read EVO - Sleep - hee haw for 48 hours prior to arrival due to work commitments & imbalance of leisure time ( i.e staying up late to compensate for working long hourse! e.g watch Fifth gear @ 0100 & researching remaps ) - Reason for visit - seeking a PPP-a-like for my WRX, more ponies, torque and generally satisfying my modding epidemic ( £1300 blown this month ) - AF's Premises - undisclosed but bugger to find @ 0700hrs until the main man arrives ! Otherwise, heavenly and full of bits that induce nudgers - State of mind - bricking it yet excited, keen to meet Andy, knackered, apprehensive, awe @ the 210mph beast, more intrepidation & urge to buy hybrid turbo's Preparation - Inform Andy of wish list - economy map & b-road / track day map, on optimax, low down grunt of key importance, ability to urinate on Elises @ KH - Mods - K&N panel, Samco hoses on intercooler, Scoobysport BB, afterburner centre decat & unresonated section, Turbo XS RFL VTA DV. - Previous results - 213 ft/lbs @ 3800 rpm ........230 bhp @ 6000 rpm - not too shabby but could do better / torque gash - Checks - basemap, laptop, licenses, EGT & AFR sensors, det cans for 'drews in-car Dj stints , alert driver, puddle avoidance sonar on max. range. Onroad Mapping - assess health of chariot off boost - sort out the economy map ( 0.6 bar .....) - ascertain optimum parameters for "fun-mode" ( 1.1 bar - cannot go more due to up-pipe causing limiting EGT temps - fully expected and I knew decats were ultimately required - still happy - load car on and off boost at variety of revs - WOW !!! Andy hits all important demister button to go into fun mode and the WRX feels alive. - perform final checks and return to rendezvous point to chat & wait for arrival of Bing ( Stevie Crosbie with recent mods) Andy F Review - dedicated, honest, knowledgeable, flexible, trustworthy and generally a millers swilling scooby worshipper who reportedly shares a kingsize Scooby Doo duvet with his very understanding wife - in summary, he's like Ronseal - does what it says on the tin but with octane additives Head home to ABZ - despite being in boost investigation mode, smoking every rep.mobile at the Forth road bridge tolls, and generally being hyper active at the prospect of new lease of life I'm totally bushed and pull over for 15 minute kip before Dundee due to 3 near misses where I drift off temporarily at wheel. Wallace Performace RR session - due to kid like excitement and cat-like curiosity i head straight up to gav Wallace for Dastek RR sesh ( where previously had been on rollers ). Gav was very accomodating and was about to shut up shop before I arrived so mucho thanks to him. Took camcorder to record session and new found Scoobysport high rev. growl For the record according to Top Gear Mag Oct 2002 Edition - the 02 WRX has the following figures - 0-60 mph in 6.3 secs // 215 bhp @ 5800 revs // 215 ft/lbs @ 3600 // max claimed speed of 143 mph The Results Hope these pics bloomin' work ........250 bhp @ 6000 rpm & 230 ft.lbs torque @ 5200 rpm Basically a gain of 35 bhp & 15 ftlbs torque on standard Not enough to give the big power boys a semi but makes me a very happy chappy after only owning her for 10 months. Pre & Post map curves are superimposed due to versatile Dastek software and Gav's database of previous results. Only bummer is that the pre-run was in 3rd gear and post run in 4th but just a minor oversight on my part. In Summary I am exceedingly happy and must have hit my demister button 20 times on a 2.5hr journey for a laff. Had a run against a new style Golf Gti from a wet roundabout up to 70 mph on the A90. My car pulled harder and earlier than it ever did before . I love the fact that you can plant the foot down earlier on corners exits and really like the in-gear pull on motorways for overtaking. Great fun to hit the fun button if some sits up yer erse. Money well spent ? I strongly believe so !! Now I need to fight of the full decat demons and visit Andy again ! With a house move impending there ain';t much scope for the foreseeable future....... The economy map is very nice for chilled driving & motorway cruising So.......the only question remains is will I be able to resist the SIDC KH all-dayer after my wallets taken a beasting of late ! Many thanks to....... Andy Forrest and his immense ECU fettling skills, Russell (WUZ) & Marc for garage services and dodgy banter, Hi Soob for allround advice, Playsatan & Wilkie for giving me a power urge after rapid pax laps last spring, Bing for his banter and chat & over 2.5 hrs of telephone calls in the last 48 hrs ...........and all of the rest of you guys for being the mod whores that you are..... It's been emotional Cheers Cal ( SIDC tatooed in my left ass cheek ) p.s this message dragged on a bit ! whoops EDIT - WORKING ON THE PICS !
Gumball Posted October 13, 2005 Posted October 13, 2005 excellent result mate !! your happy then !!!!????!!! I heard from a wee ord that you were seen creeping about that area today. Glad your sorted after your wee spell away and look forward to seeing the car in actin at KH late in the month perhaps. NICE ONE!!!! steve............wheres your report?
imprezapete Posted October 13, 2005 Posted October 13, 2005 Cal you pussy m8! You should have hammered it into that puddle instead of going in the middle and hitting the hazzard lights lol under that bridge after you u turned it at the roundabout at 6:45am this morning
~ ~ Cal ~~ Posted October 13, 2005 Author Posted October 13, 2005 Thought that might have been you ! That was about 0645 hrs and i couldn't see jack in the rearview mirror until i saw a flash of a silver WRX I don't know those roads in the slightest other than the fact I use the A1 bypass en route to whoop ass at the Tranent karting
imprezapete Posted October 13, 2005 Posted October 13, 2005 Did andy say how much of a limit that down and up pipe cats were putting on him remapping it?
the squiggle Posted October 13, 2005 Posted October 13, 2005 The guy truly is a genius Turned my car from a relatively quick car into something that needs to be respected You just need a proper turbo now to replace the hairdryer that currently resides under the bonnet. Grant
Gumball Posted October 13, 2005 Posted October 13, 2005 << Turned my car from a relatively quick car into something that needs to be respected >> he sure did!! it sure does !!
st3ph3n Posted October 13, 2005 Posted October 13, 2005 Top stuff Cal. Sounds like money well spent. Posts like this stop me buying things like defis or an ipod for using in the car. It focusses the mind on a saving full decat or single sports cat solution and a remap for real mans entertainment.
andrew_forrest Posted October 13, 2005 Posted October 13, 2005 Nice one Cal. Good to meet you today I wonder what it would make at dastek Looks like it was still increasing at 6000rpm where the run was terminated ? It would have been good to compare the drop off in power at high rpm which is far less abrupt now. The uppipe cat imposes a limit on the maximum EGT that is safe to run, this in turn requires the fueling to be rich at higher boost. (if you melt the pre turbo cat, the turbo eats cat at 120,000 rpm) The uppipe and downpipe cats cost approx 20-30bhp and similar torque. Andy
Bing Posted October 13, 2005 Posted October 13, 2005 Man thats a good post Cal, all that goes for me too. Like your good self, the weather was mince all day & I couldnt find Andys place either! Same sort of day for me though- 1) A brief chat about car 2) Kicked about with laptop no 2 3) Went out to find a drag strip and played with the car. I was well chuffed with the newly evolved WRX .....until........................................................we payed with the high boost! High boost worked a treat, 2nd 3rd and 4th are awesome from 2.5k to circa 7k! No rolling road for me but to be fair Im absolutely chuffed with the remap. Still cant get over my new 2nd and 3rd gear!
Gumball Posted October 13, 2005 Posted October 13, 2005 so now you can go and get the RR done at Dastek and see what it says
Bing Posted October 13, 2005 Posted October 13, 2005 Aye, when is the next one? Might aswell give it a shot!
~ ~ Cal ~~ Posted October 13, 2005 Author Posted October 13, 2005 << Looks like it was still increasing at 6000rpm where the run was terminated ? It would have been good to compare the drop off in power at high rpm which is far less abrupt now. >> Hey Andy - Wallace reckoned that it had been purposefully been run rich at the top-end so protect the limiter ( e.g. more fuel was dumped @ 6k ) and as such they didn't want to take it further. I'm probably not explaining this very well and Gav would be able to give a better reasoned explanation. I don't doubt either of you and I'm still happy with the results When we came off the throttle @ 6k on the RR there was quite a lot of soot dumped from the exhaust which is what initially drew Gavs attention. Either way I ain't fussed and I explained to Gav ( poorly likely) that you had discussed EGT's, higher boost and associated rich fuelling. I did state that I rarely ent over 6k anyway so as i have already said I'm happy as larry << The uppipe cat imposes a limit on the maximum EGT that is safe to run, this in turn requires the fueling to be rich at higher boost. (if you melt the pre turbo cat, the turbo eats cat at 120,000 rpm) >> Yip, doesn;t sound pretty especially after you showed me that blades that had met the lamda sensor shroud. I think decat will come in time once diplomacy talks have resumed with the other half << The uppipe and downpipe cats cost approx 20-30bhp and similar torque. >> I could be doing with those ponies ! Thanks again Andy and thanks for explaining things too - twas a long day between travel, sleep en-route & concentration Andy >> Calum
Bing Posted October 13, 2005 Posted October 13, 2005 I like the graphs Cal, Whats the score with that wee dip in torque on both curves between 3740 and 4750 mate?
james_mowbray Posted October 13, 2005 Posted October 13, 2005 Got a Power FC and map done on Tuesday, and like you guys it was raining cats and dogs Got to say that the man knows his stuff, hes worth his weight in gold All in all an enjoyable day out and the transformation in the RA is amazing Andy was none too pleased with a constant i/c pipe popping at 1.4bar, but I'll have that cured with some subtle welds. Did manage one run at 1.9bar, but that was short lived So at the end of the day ive got an RA that runs on optimax(no more octane booster) AVCR setting "A" is 1 bar and "B" is 1.35bar. modest in comparison to some, but to me its a lot more refined and drivable and hopefully reliable There was a bit sideways action entering the A1, all in a days work to Andy, im sure So a big thanks to Andy, the man in the "know"
~ ~ Cal ~~ Posted October 13, 2005 Author Posted October 13, 2005 << I like the graphs Cal, Whats the score with that wee dip in torque on both curves between 3740 and 4750 mate? >> I wondered about that too but based on the below it seems kinda normal ? ( bear in mind that the below is for the post 02 model and so is some 10 bhp up for starters ) Also units below are Nm for torque
wrxmania Posted October 13, 2005 Posted October 13, 2005 Sounds good Cal, I am off for discussions with my "gas free-er uppers" tomorrow to see what the plans, with sports cat, will be for the end of the cars warranty period mid 2006. Then a visit to Mr Forrest is in order. What else do I need to do other than 3" exhaust & STI panel filter for a figure circa 260 + BHP and similar Torque - I have the same requirements as you Cal for the way you need it to run. Do I need to uprate the fuel pump? Brian
~ ~ Cal ~~ Posted October 13, 2005 Author Posted October 13, 2005 Fuel pump only really needed on bigger horse applicatins but would'nt harm to do ! ( i think .....) Speak to Higgy cos he was stung a tad with those athletic sports cats 3" system will help though for info :- Multiply By To obtain foot-pounds 1.3558 Newton-meters ~~ On this basis I got 311 Nm torque ~~ Awaits Squirrel or someone with more knowlegde to help with Brians plight CS
wrxmania Posted October 13, 2005 Posted October 13, 2005 What was the deal with the sports Cat??? I am getting one made for the car so won't be wasting mega bucks buying an off the shelf piece of junk - but then again - who knows. I want the car to run within emmissions regs as much as possible and have it mapped as a legal car. I am not looking for mega power - still reasonable happy with the power of th car - always made between 235 and 245 BHP on the rollers and 230 - 238 lbs/ft torque so can't argue on a standard car with minor exhaust work. I should get the car to the 260+ figure with a nice 3", straight system, possibly equal length snakeheads with a sports cat. Fuel pump may also be useful, although I doubt at the power I am wanting it'll make any difference. I don't want to the car far from standard. Anyone got any advice??? Brian...
Bing Posted October 13, 2005 Posted October 13, 2005 I'd imagine the OE fuel pump would be fine for circa 260BHP, but im no expert Ive got walbro 255 but aint got a clue what power ive got, nor do I know how much this has helped, sorry, not much advice here mate
fai17 Posted October 13, 2005 Posted October 13, 2005 Welldone Cal.I beat you can,t wait till next track day at KH. WRXMANIA:I think you mean equal length headers and snakehead downpipe. The downpipe will give you the biggest gain and keep the downpipe cat free.If you want a cat put it in the middle section before the A/F censor. If you put on headers make sure you put a decatted up pipe too and wrap them aswell. Make sure it a 3"system and is it C and C that you are using? If not i would recommend Meercat in Kilburnie. He taught C and C how to make snakehead btw. Hope that clears some things up for yous.
colin_ross Posted October 13, 2005 Posted October 13, 2005 Glad to hear all is well Cal. You'll realise that this is the thin end of the wedge and the mods will come thick and fast now. You and your wallet are in for a hell of a ride.
tino Posted October 13, 2005 Posted October 13, 2005 Nice one mate, seems I won't be pulling away from you on the straights for much longer You seem to be well on the way down the slippery 'modding' slope now! A drop of 3 in 1 oil in the wallet helps the cash slide out a bit easier
Iaing Posted October 13, 2005 Posted October 13, 2005 Good report Cal You'll need to take me out for a blast sometime Iain
