oobster Posted August 30, 2005 Posted August 30, 2005 ......before you seriously considered selling the scoob & buying something sensible? Just asking as the price of crude oil has risen again today to a new record high after the hurricane in the Gulf of Mexico. I think it's 97.9p at my local Shell.
WRC No 1 Posted August 31, 2005 Posted August 31, 2005 it got to be over £1.50 for me. thats whats good about a uk car i can go back to normal unleaded ha ha lol
sheep Posted August 31, 2005 Posted August 31, 2005 If it get much higher do you think you will be able to sell your scoob
wrxmania Posted August 31, 2005 Posted August 31, 2005 Taking into account initial buying cost, HUGE depreciation, modifications, servicing and maintenance, insurance, road tax and other sundries, fuel is a small part of the cost. People who sell it based on fuel economy generally do not think of this - they are glad to take a hit of £8000 depreciation when they sell to save a couple of hundred worth of fuel each year - often a no brainer. Yes, there are cheaper cars to own and run, but if fuel economy is SO important, then they should have bought a diesel Mundano in the first place. RANT OVER Brian.
scuba dou Posted August 31, 2005 Posted August 31, 2005 Need a N/A box for me TBH; when the red light comes on add 100 ml of NF, fill the tank with O/max and hand over card. +/- 140 miles later....ditto the above soon turns to when you get back on the open roads.
andy Posted August 31, 2005 Posted August 31, 2005 Company fuel card - not a problem for me so not voted.
st3ph3n Posted August 31, 2005 Posted August 31, 2005 This is hard to answer. Depends on what the rest of my life was doing. I'll have a think. I'd probably try and wangle a company car or a job nearer home before giving the car up. Does that make me sad?
oobster Posted August 31, 2005 Author Posted August 31, 2005 A good point Paul. Brian - also a decent point of view but it's not so much the fuel economy thats the problem, it's the cost. Yes, the two are linked, but if you can afford to drive an average of 400 miles per week (say) at the current cost of optimax, it might not be affordable to drive those same 400 miles if the price has went up 20p per litre. That's a tenner a tank. Now don't get me wrong, i suspect the majority of owners could afford a tenner a week more but for some others that might be a bit too far, especially those of us who use our scoobs for work AND pleasure. (i bet those of you who do this won't see your companies increasing your pence-per-mile allowances!!)
2559B Posted August 31, 2005 Posted August 31, 2005 << Oobster there is always public transport >> probably more expensive to use public ( LACK OF QUALITY ) transport ......... better off running the scoob !!!! how many people would use public transport if it was better quality/ reliable/ clean/ affordable ???? ( dreamland I know, but use your imaginaton )
sheep Posted August 31, 2005 Posted August 31, 2005 Oobster i am quite lucky in that i pass a shell station on the way to work and i have also started a new job which may involve car sharing with my brother who has a 350 bhp evo 6 but also a tdi passat that get about 50 mph. I think if i was doing a huge mileage i would look for a cheap second car.
johnnyr6 Posted August 31, 2005 Posted August 31, 2005 NOW, i've had enough, i just filled up yesterday and it was 99.9p.
imprezapete Posted August 31, 2005 Posted August 31, 2005 £1 a litre eh, thats going be the point where a few of the public will complain. I hear the USA is best not pleased with current prices as well, but this is truely having a global affect. $70 a barren now and they recon $100 is not far off
paddy247 Posted August 31, 2005 Posted August 31, 2005 i always say, "if you have to ask the price, Then you cant afford it"
jamie_wood Posted August 31, 2005 Posted August 31, 2005 << Need a N/A box for me TBH; when the red light comes on add 100 ml of NF, fill the tank with O/max and hand over card. +/- 140 miles later....ditto the above soon turns to when you get back on the open roads. >> Same for me If I cant afford to fill it then I wont have the car or be living in this country
ed-209 Posted August 31, 2005 Posted August 31, 2005 I have to drive a corsa tdi 1.7 5 days a week for my job, in the space of less than 3years I've done 94,000 and counting so my only pleasure is driving my scooby (I don't smoke, drink go with loose women) so even if the fuel was £3.00 a liter I would still pay it. I may have to give up food but small sacrifices have to be made. Ed. PS. But at least the roads would be empty.
irish al Posted August 31, 2005 Posted August 31, 2005 Wanted a scoob for ages and now that ive got one theres no way the price of petrol would make me sell it. The cost of another car including insurance, tax, mot, and probably breakdowns would be far more than the extra cost of petrol for the subaru. I even have the option to take my gf car to work to keep the miles down but after one day its back to the old faithfull subaru for the rest of the week. Ive done arround 10,000 miles since I got the car and that was only three months ago. I dont even bother to look at the price anymore. Am actually scared to sign on to my optimax statement thingy to see how much ive spent. Out of interest how much in general to fill a tank and roughly how many miles are people getting. Costs me arround £50 if empty and get approx 250-300 miles
2559B Posted August 31, 2005 Posted August 31, 2005 << Out of interest how much in general to fill a tank and roughly how many miles are people getting. jamie_wood Posted August 31, 2005 Posted August 31, 2005 £50 = 220 miles (average) £50 @ average of 97p per liter is 51.4 liters is 13.6 Gallons 220miles / 13.6 Gallons = 16mpg So it costs me about a tenner to go to Tescos and back!!! Hence the Big diesel jeep with the remap sitting outside the door
andy Posted August 31, 2005 Posted August 31, 2005 My mileage is high, but my take is if you're spending a large part of your life on the road, you might as well drive something that's fun! £50 will get me 220-250 miles. Did a 1700 mile boys roadtrip across the US in July in an RV. Averaged 7 miles to the gallon and it still cost us less than $150 (£90ish) each between 4 of us.
fai17 Posted August 31, 2005 Posted August 31, 2005 Its defo not worth worrying about the price. Its quite simple really..when tank is showing a 1/4 just fill up..see simple. I get about 200 mileish to the tank. I worked it out to 17mpg
Gumball Posted August 31, 2005 Posted August 31, 2005 would have to exceed the 1.50 mark. similar to smoking. when would you give them up if you smoked? you dont.
st3ph3n Posted August 31, 2005 Posted August 31, 2005 << £50 = 220 miles (average) £50 @ average of 97p per liter is 51.4 liters is 13.6 Gallons 220miles / 13.6 Gallons = 16mpg So it costs me about a tenner to go to Tescos and back!!! Hence the Big diesel jeep with the remap sitting outside the door >> Jamie, by my calcs 51.4 litres is 11.3064147 Gallons. We use Imperial Gallons and not Yanky ones. So you're actually getting 19.5mpg give or take. Not that it really helps much.
fai17 Posted August 31, 2005 Posted August 31, 2005 << would have to exceed the 1.50 mark. similar to smoking. when would you give them up if you smoked? you dont. >> I thought you are trying to cut down
