MY08 Hatch - K&N Cold Air Induction

Recommended Posts

Hello folks,

I've got my credit card in hand and am ready to buy an air filter but can you let me know if I'm getting the right bits?

on Andy Forrest Performance's website he list's this:

Level 2 340-360 bhp

Full Decat turbo back 2.5 " or 3” bore

Walbro 255 l/hr uprated fuel pump (not reqd on 08/09)

EcuTek custom remap

K+N panel filter (cold air induction required on 08/09)

My car already has a Prodrive Performance Pack installed.

Now I've gone onto K&N filters website and found two parts listed.

The first is a panel filter --> Panel Filter

The second is a Typhoon Air Intake Filter --> Typhoon

Can somebody confirm if it's the second one I should be buying?

Now - I already have a Prodrive ECU - would this cause problems if I change out the air intake?

Would I still gain power from making this change, how much, and does it change engine sound?

And will I still pass my MOT with the new one fitted?

Anything else I need to know - or can someone recommend an online shoppie or somewhere to get a good deal on one in Aberdeen area?

Much appreciated!!!

I've got that typhoon kit on my car, it sounds sweet, you really hear the turbo working  think i got my from potn online. Defo need to get your car mapped once you've fitted it. It wont affect the mot unless you fully de-cat it!

Many thanks for the info lads!

Think I'll get one of the Typhoon kits ordered up today. Regards the remap - is Andy Forrest the guy to contact, or can somebody in or enar Aberdeen do a decent job?

I've heard PPP already uses an Ecutek chip - so could this just be reprogrammed or would I need to purchase a new unit and license do ye reckon?

Ecutek is not a chip it mapping software used to remap the subaru ecu ie 99 onwards subaru. You just get your ecu remaped ie buy another license .There is wallace performance in Aberdeen Ecutek mapper or speak to Brian Downie i hear Zen Peformance EcuTek mapper come's up to map cars for him or its a trip down to Portseton outside Edinburgh for Andy Forrest for Ecutek remap .There's hundreds of people in the Scottish section of sidc that have used Andy Forrest for remaps

Thanks for the info.

Ordered the K&N Typhoon!

Will be sitting waiting for me by time get hame fae this trip.

Saw Wallace Performance did Ecutek but thought they were mostly specialised in Evo's so a bit wary? With the occassional scarey stories of blown engines on the hatch I want somebody who really knows what they're doing - so will prob check my calendar and look into it more when I'm hame.

Take it I should be ok to install the filter and then drive it for the remap (eg Aberdeen to Edinburgh) - as long as drive it on mode on the SI-Drive controller and take it nice n easy?

Looking forward to getting this fitted :driving:

I got mine done from Paul from Zen motorsport through Brian Downie, Andy forrest did my last car i had, can't fault any of those guys work! The hatch feels mega quick now after getting it done! and its peace of mind knowing it's set up properly for the exhaust & filter.

Monster, Have you an exhaust on your one?

I've got the Prodrive back box and the other prodrive bit they fitted - nae sure, was that a sportscat maybe?

Sorry, sounding like a scoob noob! lol

I dinnae really want to replace the Prodrive exhaust parts.

Well - if these Zen mob are ok I'll prob see about that when I'm hame - save a run to Edinburgh, although might have reason to go there anyway so will wait and see once I'm organised.

Looks like 2008 PPP mods are just a new high flow intercooler hose and stainless steel sports exhaust back box?

I'm sure I they replaced the downpipes too - I'm pretty sure I was handed the stock downpipe after the PPP was fitted.

Now - I don't want a hoorin loud exhaust system - kinda happy with volume just now but maybe a wee bit more wouldn't go amiss.

I don't really want to replace the PPP backbox or PPP downpipe - is there another component to change?

I'm maybe kinda happy just to fit induction kit at this time cos can do that myself - I've no workspace to do exhaust mods and am keen to do work myself while I'm learning about car stuff.

What's the bigger bit on the mid pipe of the stock one in this picture? Is that the Cat? Maybe could do something there with the mid-pipe?

Sounds like you've done exactly what I've done to my hatch! I went for the perrin CAI, a remap and the full decat on my sti from scoobyclinic and it's very loud, but that's what I wanted! I'm no expert but I don't think there's much more you can do to the exhaust apart from taking the cat out.

I think the only problem with driving it on an unmapped induction kit is you might get an engine management light pop on because of the different air flow rates, but as dipsy said; take it easy (as tempting as it is to floor it!!) and it'll be OK

I ran mine (Hawkeye) with cold air induction for around 3 months whilst I did the other mods (decat etc). No check light came on and now it has been mapped and I get the full benefit. You may or may not be lucky with the light.

Ok - got my Typhoon sitting at hame ready to install and just booked a remap date with AndyF - for before Alford day :driving:

Looks straightforward enough looking at the instructions - but just one thing... You remove the fresh air inlet duct and OE airbox... then install the Typhoon... but the instructions kinda stop there. Are ye meant to re-install the fresh air inlet duct again after? Or does that part become redundant?

I've seen some cars with an induction kit but they also have the duct so it's got me a bit confused.

The fresh air duct on the front panel doesn't fit with the typhoon kit, i did look to modify mine to make it fit but the heatsheild you get with the kit stops it. Just ran in a seperate cold air pipe from down beside the foglamp.

My car is out of warranty now. Was told to remap it after i fitted the induction kit so had that done to.

Nae bad. I'd don't have fog lights so wonder if i can do something from that route to run a cold air pipe. Don't suppose you have any pictures of your pipe routing?

I've seen a few threads on iwsti and other forums with folk doing a similar job on older imprezas, to varying degrees of quality, nae many pictures though. A friend has a copy of the MY08 service manual and I can see a hole underneath the fog lamp cover that may work... but I'm nae so keen on putting a hole in my OE fog lamp cover in case I make a hash of it.

I've 1 week between getting home and installing kit and going for remap so should be able to work it out in that time. Any tips much appreciated though!

i thought about doing away with my foglight & putting in one of them trumpet type air vents in but decided against it, managed to get the pipe in beside instead. something like this might do you?

I dont have ant pics of mine sorry. The plastic covers come off easy, i'm sure you could pick up a spare one & use it incase it all goes pete tong!

Thanks for the link! Sounds a bit too easy though - run a pipe to the fog light and hey presto!

Need to wait till I get home so I can have a poke aboot to see what I can do - and hopefully my beloved doesn't end up on rat-car.com!

If it all goes tits up and I canna get a cold air pipe run in time - if I get my remap just with the Typhoon in as described by the instruction sheet with no other mods - will the remap still work ok if I run a cold air pipe at a later date? Or would my decision not to run a cold air pipe be kinda permanent unless i got another remap.

Sorry for all the questions!

If you can manage to fit the typhoon kit yourself you'll easy manage to run that pipe in, There's loads of room once you take the massive airbox out. They'll easy manage to map it without the cold feed pipe but the best case scenario is to have as much cold air feeding the filter as you can. You'll be impressed with the noise the kit makes, sounds awesome.

What exhaust have you on your car & who's mapping it? My turn for the questions

Surely you cannot fit a pipe to the typhoon as it is designed to work in the engine compartment - hence the filter on the outside. I have an Apollo that has an enclosed filter that has a cold air pipe that I have running into the wheel arch area so I get a true cold air feed, though I may re-route this to behind my new grill soon. I was advised against the Typhoon as it darws in warm air from under the bonnet, or is yours fitted outside of the bonnet area? I do get lovely turbo noises coming from there these days though :)

Been looking online last night for ideas and looks like i'll manage no probs.

Really looking forward to hearing it!

My exhaust has the PPP kit mods. The changes were a 2nd cat delete and a more freely flowing back box.

Gives a nae bad burble without causing embarassment - and nae hassle at MOT time either.

I've booked in to Port Seton to get my mapping done - have read good reviews, as much for the experience as the map - so thought I'd treat myself to a run back from the capital after the maps done! :driving:

The filter is under the bonnet. The cold air duct just transports air to the general area of the filter, kinda blasting the filter with cold air (from the fog lamp area). The duct doesn't actually connect to the filter (I don't think).
