neill54 Posted February 28, 2011 Posted February 28, 2011 Well after owning my wrx for five years this summer I'm struggling at what to do! I've just landed a great job only problem it's in st Andrews started last week and love it but the petrol costs are going to kill me I am car sharing but still I can afford it but just effin grudge it! So thoughts are sell mine and sell the wifes forester buy her a newer impreza and buy a super mini cheap Clio 172 top of list at the minute for work! What's the view of the masses? I'm sitting a bit miffed cause I'll miss driving it big time!! Neil
terzo neil Posted February 28, 2011 Posted February 28, 2011 get a diesel for the commute and keep the impreza for the weekend
gus the bus Posted February 28, 2011 Posted February 28, 2011 Neil, Newer Impreza sounds like a plan for the Mrs but would you genuinely see any better fuel consumption with the Clio. They are thirsty buggers
StrikE Posted February 28, 2011 Posted February 28, 2011 get a diesel for the commute and keep the impreza for the weekend get an oil burner & if you can keep the broom car for weekends/nights. Do that for a while & what a smile you get on your face when you drive the Impreza again. Best of luck in your new job
neill54 Posted February 28, 2011 Author Posted February 28, 2011 I just can't see myself driving a boring car need something with a personality! Had 205 and 309 gtis for years before but they are getting on a bit too to be daily driver so clio fits that bill and surely the Clio would do better than 300 miles for 70 quid!! Neil
scooby222 Posted February 28, 2011 Posted February 28, 2011 the way the market is at the moment youl get heehaw for the scoob, so its all down to running it - get yourself a diesel clio van, 60mpg and fun handling, nippy enough as standard and you can chip it to 95hp
neill54 Posted February 28, 2011 Author Posted February 28, 2011 I know what will happen I'll end up in my old wrx she'll end up in an sti of some sort!! Who's the mug eh! Just really pisses me off that goverent is screwing one of a few luxuries that's left!! I remember when they done away with 4 star I thought then what will drive now!!! Neil

Neil was in similar situation a couple of years ago, bought a 328i coupe sport for work because i didn't want anything boring either but common sense prevailed and i ended up buying a mondeo diesel.does the job and reasonably cheap to run.definately appreciate your scooby at the weekends
mikeyb13 Posted March 1, 2011 Posted March 1, 2011 I just can't see myself driving a boring car need something with a personality! Had 205 and 309 gtis for years before but they are getting on a bit too to be daily driver so clio fits that bill and surely the Clio would do better than 300 miles for 70 quid!! Neil I had a Clio for 3 years and averaged 30+mpg, Had the Subaru for 2 and averaged 18, so I would say it would save you a lot. Buy a 205 you know you want to. Ill give you a go in mine if you fancy remembering how good they are.
supremeweb Posted March 1, 2011 Posted March 1, 2011 300 out of a tank! I wish! best I have EVER had was 200!
Joe G Posted March 1, 2011 Posted March 1, 2011 If i got 300 miles to a tank in my scoob id be keeping it lol. Only ever managed 250miles!! Im opting for a diesel if my scoob sells, but its a slow market these days and aint selling it unless i get my asking price. Was looking at mondeos and A4's but the last time i got rid of a scoob for a more sensible car it only lasted a month before i ended up buying another one lol
Ovv Posted March 1, 2011 Posted March 1, 2011 get a diesel for the commute and keep the impreza for the weekend also, cheap oil burner and newer impreza, I know it doesnt have much personality but MK5 Golfs are quite reasonable price wise now. My old MK5 Golf was 140bhp remapped upto 180 by Star Performance, it totally flew whilst still managing 55mpg. Combined with cruise it was a good drive.
mystery machine Posted March 1, 2011 Posted March 1, 2011 (edited) Get a second motor that is cheap to buy, cheap to fuel, cheap to tax and cheap to insure*. If possible, find one that handles well and you'll still enjoy driving it – you seldom get the chance to use big power in rush-hour traffic anyway. The Scooby will feel all the more special for not driving it every day 'just because you have to', plus you'll keep the mileage down, the services further apart and reduce general wear and tear. If you don't like the idea of it sitting all week every week, you can always take it to work on the one or two nicest days of the week and you'll still be keeping the costs down. P.S. I take it a move to Fife's out of the question? * That's 'cheap' as in 'relatively cheap', nothing's every truly cheap these days where cars are concerned! Edited March 1, 2011 by Mystery Machine
neill54 Posted March 1, 2011 Author Posted March 1, 2011 A move to fife is a no go I'll only be working there for 6 months then it could be anywhere! Was a good run today done it in less than half a tank done a deal with the wife for now I'll take her fozzie 2 days a week then as soon as I get a week holiday bike test and a nice r6 or gsxr that will make it cheaper!! Neil
mystery machine Posted March 1, 2011 Posted March 1, 2011 (edited) Bike sounds like a great idea! Much the same benefits as the cheapo car suggestion, but you get to enjoy the bike days as well as the Scooby days - cool! (I'd love to do the bike thang, but just too feart of breaking my spine). I can see why you were looking for options, BTW - "less than half a tank" sounds like crazy daily petrol consumption at today's prices Edited March 1, 2011 by Mystery Machine
neill54 Posted March 1, 2011 Author Posted March 1, 2011 Ha ha the break the spine thing been there done that! Crashed my minter of a 205 fractured two vertebrae not too good was very lucky so now try to think lifes too short to worry I've got a few off road things so not too scared it's all the other muppets you have to worry about!! Going to run between mines and the wifes for now and see how we go Neil
subarucraig Posted March 1, 2011 Posted March 1, 2011 glad your keeping it youd miss it i'm looking for a wee car for daily commute think would save me money and appreciate scooby at weekend
mystery machine Posted March 3, 2011 Posted March 3, 2011 (edited) it's all the other muppets you have to worry about!! Aye, that's the bit that scares me! Anyways, let us know how it turns oot Edited March 3, 2011 by Mystery Machine
lewisscoob Posted March 3, 2011 Posted March 3, 2011 I have a wee petrol car to tool about in town in but if I was doing any motorway mileage I'd have a diesel VAG car of some description.
