johns
Apparently a few people running the 2.,5 engine in the 2008/2009 model STI have experienced engine problems. This is Subaru's response to some negative comments on some forums and on facebook about Subaru reliability: http://subaru.co.uk/general/engineeringtechnical-statement Link to comment

t5nyw
A few thousand words condensed into 10 words "Nothing wrong with our engines" "it's all the owners fault" IMHO IIRC Link to comment
mike_pinder
Yes apparently the 7% failure rate across just over 1000 cars (16 cars with mulitiple failure) are pretty much all the customers fault. The body swerving that continues on this subject is pretty impressive. The 2.5ltr engine in the 08/09 STI's appears to have been under engineered and has an inherent weakness. This is a global issue, Subaru have failed to nip it in the bud and now they have reached a point where they find it difficult to climb down and do the right thing for all the customers that have stayed brand loyal and kept them in business. Shame on you Subaru. Your customers are voting with there feet and are unlikely ever to return. Link to comment

For example, the EJ25 engines can run on 95 RON fuel, but if you insist on doing so and putting the engine under high loads, you can pretty much bank on an engine failure sooner or later. They have to be able to run on 95 RON to get the UK type approval, that doesn't mean that it's a sensible idea to run it on 95 RON fuel. I've only ever run mine on 97 - 99 RON fuel and not had any troubles with the engine. Edited October 12, 2010 by scoobydude Link to comment

If you "can bank on engine failure" then in can't run on 95 RON !!!! That's like saying a car can run without tyres on it's wheel rims but at some point it will stop. Subaru have under engineered the EJ25 hence the failures. The issue that owners have (in my experience) is not the fact that there is a problem, but Subaru's brick wall responce as to how they address the bigger picture and give owners peace of mind. The early Hatch cars will soon be out of warranty, so let's see how engine failure on one owner, regularly serviced vehicles are handled then. Link to comment
Mother Theresa
The run-out 2009 Honda S2000s have the same problem with engine failures. Co-incidence? Link to comment
Gary WRX
is it only the 2008/09 models that have this problem then or is the issue ongoing? Link to comment
scoobydude
is it only the 2008/09 models that have this problem then or is the issue ongoing? It's particularly prevalent on the cars with the Si-drive map switching system. I believe Subaru UK haven't imported any 2.5 litre Imprezas for 2 years now, so we'll have to wait and see if the problem is ongoing or not (at least in the UK). Link to comment
