Sunstrip Advice

So as several people know, I have recently purchased JoeG's old spec c.

Lovely car but comes with problems / issues, mainly being "light weight"!

Car lacks a passenger sun visor all for the weight saving issue, so this seems a perfect time to fit a sunstrip.

Question is (apart from which colour to get) if its fitted to the outside of the windscreen, will the wipers foul on it and eventually rip some of it off? Or do I go down the route of having it fitted inside the windscreen?

decisions decisions

Hi Andy

I would personally go for the professional internal tint like the BTCC cars!!

They look proper and dont get wiped away and you can see through it

as well for the top of Lanark High St canny see the bloody filter light issues!!!! :brickwall:

Did I hear something about them having to be a certain distance from the top of the wiper blades to pass an MOT? Have a vague recollection of something like that?!?

A sunstripe can not cover more than 25% on the wiperblade, or something along those lines.

IIRC there are two zones.. Primary one beign the drivers view and secondary zone passenger view (more or less)

Primary view is somethign like 10mm obsctuction and Secondary zone 30mm.. (The specific details are on the VOSA website somewhere..)

Unfortunatley due to the height the wipers on teh imrpeza go to the top of hte screen it makes pretty much any sunstrip illegal.. A road side VOSA check will hammer you for it (potentially 3 points £60 fine and car taken off the road) as it'll be considered an unsafe vehicle. Also it "shouldn't" pass an MOT.. I've failed a MOT because of it in the past, but I know plenty of peopel that havent had any trouble.. Last time I just made up modified wiper blades for the test.

Just something to be aware of..

Andy, my blobeye had an interior dark tinted sunstrip which was very effective in most sunshine and light conditions, meaning that I virtually didn't need to use the fold down visor (Maybe another few gramms you could save there too??). If I was faced with the choice that's what I'd go for, and keeps it nice and legal too  .

I recently had the wifes car tinted and asked the fitter at the time about the MOT legality of sunstrips. He told me that the external ones that were opaque, unless they didnt hit the wipers, were illegal and considering the height of the blades, it makes the(shortened to fit)external sunstrips pretty much useless.

The internal sunstrips, where they can be as dark looking(externally)as you want and still unobstructive internally are fully legal, even below the level of the wiper blades. He has been working inconjunction with an MOT stattion who have been having major discussions with VOSA on this subject. This MOT tester will happilly explain the legality and happy to pass any car at MOT time with an internal sunstip fitted.

I will be looking to get an internal one soon, with the winter mornings soon upon us, the sun always gets in between the sunvisors currently on the car.

I hope this helps?

Cheers,

Col
