mystery machine Posted July 22, 2010 Posted July 22, 2010 This isn't a response to anyone's post in particular... I was just considering how much more there is (or can be) to driving pleasure than straight line speed, or even cornering speed, for that matter. For instance, I recently 'held off' a 911 on a popular Fife B-road - he was willing to go a bit quicker than me on the straights (I try to avoid license-busting speeds), but I was gradually pulling away through the bends... All sounds great, apart from that the low-slung Porker looked so much more composed in the corners than the STI! I still love the Impreza, and bangs-for-buck they're hard to beat, but I know which car I'd rather have been driving that day...
liquidvisionsti Posted July 22, 2010 Posted July 22, 2010 in my wagon I was winding up a cayman S for 13 Miles on the backroads past hamilton down through lanark and back to wishaw the guy couldnt get past me at all left him for dust on the straights. Haha nice I\m guessing he wouldn't have been all that pleased . I love the fact that a lot of people under-estimate the wagon's.
scoobywho Posted July 22, 2010 Posted July 22, 2010 Haha nice I\m guessing he wouldn't have been all that pleased . I love the fact that a lot of people under-estimate the wagon's. It is quite funny because he paid between 30 and 40 grand for his and mine was £4995 a couple of years ago. it is fun as its a daily driver with a fair amount done performance wise the only giveaway is the rota 18s and the exhaust
colin_ross Posted July 22, 2010 Author Posted July 22, 2010 I was just considering how much more there is (or can be) to driving pleasure than straight line speed, or even cornering speed, for that matter. I can see what you're getting at. I had more fun driving my 106 gti,at far lower speeds, than I've ever had in the Subaru. Think it was because the limits were far easier to reach and if things went a bit wrong you weren't foing silly speeds when it happens.
mystery machine Posted July 22, 2010 Posted July 22, 2010 (edited) Think it was because the limits were far easier to reach and if things went a bit wrong you weren't foing silly speeds when it happens. Absolutely. Been driving for years and years, but only recently made a more conscious effort to brush-up on car control, and I reckon I learnt more about limit-of-grip driving when pushing my wee runabout (away from traffic) on greasy roads during the harsh winter there than I could ever learn in the Scoob on public roads. With the Scoob the thrill comes more from the sheer level of grip, and the forces that I can feel acting on me and the car through bends, and of course the power delivery (even in my weedy standard STI!). It handles well, but could be better... got my eye on some Bilstein coilovers which might help out with that Nothing wrong with thrashing the odd Audi/Beemer/Porsche into the bargain, of course - but there are various perspectives you can have on that scenario Edited July 22, 2010 by Mystery Machine
trogg Posted July 23, 2010 Posted July 23, 2010 For instance, I recently 'held off' a 911 on a popular Fife B-road - he was willing to go a bit quicker than me on the straights (I try to avoid license-busting speeds), but I was gradually pulling away through the bends... Sounds like my journey earlier this week, kept catching an Audi A6 (Tdi Quatro) through the bends, he'd pull away a bit on straights or uphill, same with a BMW 525i. I was in an Escort non-turbo diesel van! In the van you need momentum to get up hills and there is no torque to overtake easily, so it's all about smooth driving and keeping up momentum, good fun, but can be frustrating with slower vehicles through bends that pull away, even a wee bit on straights.
fai17 Posted July 24, 2010 Posted July 24, 2010 Nice Lotus Mikey....i do like these car go on track days. They round corners like its on rails. But on the straight....thats another story.
marko72 Posted July 24, 2010 Posted July 24, 2010 A few days ago going through Port Glasgow past the big tescos noticed in the rear view mirror a civic that looked a bit boy racer type. I had a wee feeling. I passed the garage on the left and got the red lights at coronation park. Great I thought he will be stopping right beside me. It hadnt even rolled to stop when I hear a nasally voice go ' Oi mate, do you want a race?' It was from the young guy in the back seat passenger side. I said sorry or something an he says either that 'this is a 1.6 or a 2.6 civic'. There was a young lassie in the back and she was smiling over and I said 'I think I would definately lose then'. They were all laughing and so was I. Good fun banter, nothing nasty. The lights change and we drive off at normal speed, he cant speed off as traffic in front of him thats come out from the junction, not that I think for a mo he could even if he wanted to. I had a clear road ahead so I thought sod it, give them a taste and sound of the afterburner, thats all they prob want to see anyway. So off I go and away. Good fun and maybe gave them something to talk about. Thats just what some of these young drivers want to see I reckon. Cheers
mikeyb13 Posted July 24, 2010 Posted July 24, 2010 But on the straight....thats another story. Cheers Peter. It can drive you a bit crazy at track days being stuck behind cars through the bends then watch them disappears up the straight. Especially when you have to brake early for them at the end of the same straight, you are just dying to dive down the inside. I do have plans that might solve the power issue tho

What have you got planned?? I loved the PAX laps round Knockhill (even with the rollers and spray tan bottles rolling around the footwell!!) Edited July 24, 2010 by scoobysailor

I do have plans that might solve the power issue tho I'm sure they mods will bring the horses up indeed weight to power ratio will be a pocket rocket looking forward to the mods
mystery machine Posted July 25, 2010 Posted July 25, 2010 I do have plans that might solve the power issue tho Nitrous? That could be a neat means of giving a healthy boost up the straights without the encumbrance of adding heavy, handling-compromising turbo/supercharger gubbins
mikeyb13 Posted July 25, 2010 Posted July 25, 2010 I think the Mystery is what have you been smoking mate. Nitrous? Looking at VF Supercharger Conversions. It the same Supercharger Lotus use but with a smaller pulley and the Intercooler is mounted behind the Side scoop rather than on top of the engine so it runs much cooler. The figures speak for themselves. Ill have an even bigger performance boost as my car only currently has 190bhp Oh and Fraser, that was Chris's Spray Tan
the squiggle Posted July 25, 2010 Posted July 25, 2010 The guy in the RS4 Avant tonight was not impressed gettin has ass handed to him by a P reg rice burner with a Max Power bodykit .....and yes the finger was used and justified

Great car's too drive with definately a lot too give when you start taking that road down the modification route which actually goes on longer than you intend it too
mystery machine Posted July 25, 2010 Posted July 25, 2010 I think the Mystery is what have you been smoking mate. Nitrous? No, the mystery is what happened to your sense of irony.Good luck with the s/charger (I'm not being ironic now).
scooby222 Posted July 25, 2010 Posted July 25, 2010 its always fun, think the lad last night with the evo8 mr340/60 thingy was surprised not to be dropping a puny sti - stage 3 will have him crying in his bean can.....
scoobywho Posted July 26, 2010 Posted July 26, 2010 its always fun, think the lad last night with the evo8 mr340/60 thingy was surprised not to be dropping a puny sti - stage 3 will have him crying in his bean can..... those lancers have terrible lag they need to be rolling to get a good race
braveheart Posted July 26, 2010 Posted July 26, 2010 I think the Mystery is what have you been smoking mate. Lol
scooby222 Posted July 27, 2010 Posted July 27, 2010 those lancers have terrible lag they need to be rolling to get a good race oh he was rolling ok, started at 50 and was still with him at 140 - though i had to sit back a bit to avoid the gravel rash
thebigfelly Posted July 27, 2010 Posted July 27, 2010 audio rs4 i think it was , up my rear on edinburgh city bypass, coming up the slip road, onto the bypass , all the way into the outside lane, when i didnt speed up he pulls alongside me in the inside lane , looks over and sees that its the gf driving (she wanted a shot ) sticks with us for about a min then just pulls off infront of us , duno if they think im a boy racer because of the decals on the ca or if its the scoob or a mix of both , p.s anyone else noticed their a better driver or slower driver since owning a scoob or is it just me. in my coupe i used to just hammer it everywhere take the revs right up to 7and a half , now in the scoob im very conciencious keep the revs low around 2k mark and try to squeeze as many miles out of a tank of petrol as much as possible . but i do open the throttle every now and again . even driving to work i leave earlier just so i dont floor it like i used to ,
sparky_sj04 Posted July 27, 2010 Posted July 27, 2010 p.s anyone else noticed their a better driver or slower driver since owning a scoob or is it just me. Actually I found that everyone that drove my Scooby turned into a maniac... (including my mother). Plus everyone empathised that it would be very hard not to drive everywhere flat out because as soon as it starts to boost the natural inclination is to keep it planted. Better driver = yes. Slower driver = no.

He then agreed for the first time ever the reason a young person would buy an Impreza. He drove it when it was bog standard. He is going to get some shock when he gets a shot and the power has doubled and the weight dropped by 200kgish
