  1. Phone Chris Knott Insurance, they are a broker and usually get good deals on more specialist cars.
  2. Just the vat on fule or all vat? It's the other taxes on fuel that are the main cost, not really the vat. Don't believe that, I managed fine working for years at Coulport, staying in Kilcreggan, driving a Transit (RWD) in all weathers. It's not as if you get lots of snow that lies all winter. I don't see any government in the UK nationalising the supply of fuel and setting the price nationally. It just won't happen. I wouldn't want to use 6 month old petrol in any car never mind my scoob! I don't know what to do, but since we all agree that blocking refineries won't work, and the major part of the cost of a litre of fuel is tax, then a protest at the government fuel tax policies seems like the most obvious. What price for a litre of petrol should we pay, remembering that part of the reason for the taxes is to make it expensive, to encourage drivers to use more economical cars and reduce CO2 Levels ( ) No we are paying for the previous governments gross misconduct and poor management of the countries economy. The banks are paying back what they owe, and the government will make a profit when they come to sell the shares they own, if they manage to do that right.
  3. Or buying a car you can afford to run. But I agree with many of the points you make, but I'm not so sure that 90% of UK fuel comes into Scotland (if you mean from Scottish waters in the North Sea) Supply and demand and competition will obviouslly have an affect on the price of fuel, hence the reason it is more expensive in remote areas. I suppose one solution to that problem would be to nationalise the supply of fuel and then have the price fixed at a maximum level. Other option might be the one being discussed in the news recently of a fuel price stabiliser and/or the remote areas stabiliser. Blocking refineries for one day will have little or zero affect on the supply of fuel, especially if it is announced in advance, all the stations will stock up! You may get media coverage but it wont do anything.
  4. I presumed it was about fule costs, but I don't get why blocking a refinery for a few hours is going to do much good. If no fuel can get out than that will affect everyone, and that generally ends up hurting the actual campaign. The main cost of fuel is the taxes that are added to it by the government, not the cost of the fuel leaving the refinery (approx 50p per ltr) The protest should be aimed at the government, so maybe protest at the various parliaments in the UK or a different more specific withholding of tax or similar. IMHO
  5. I'm sure the Gleaner in Ullapool has Super (prob 97)
  6. What's the protest about and why is it targeted at oil refineries?
  7. From memory there is not a Shell station in Thurso, there is an Esso and Gleaner. Other Gleaner stations have super unleaded but I'm not sure what Ron it is. There are no Shell stations in the north west past Glasgow and north of Inverness area. There used to be but now most seem to be branded Gleaner, not sure if they still use Shell fuel or not though. I've used the one in Kyle for 'Super' and have had no ill effects. There is a Tesco in Wick but I'm not sure if it stocks Momentum/99.
  8. Well I got my Nokians in September and have had them fitted for a few weeks. They took a bit of 'scrubbing in' first few miles they were like driving on marbles in the wet, but have settled down great just in time for the snow. Now they are brilliant, nothing stops the car, using it as a snow plough to clear the top 6 or 8 inches off for everyone else!
  9. Goodyear ones, and yes I've tried them and they are great. Not tried any other aero blades though, so just a "great" compared to normal worn wipers.
  10. welcome, from another West Lothian wagoner.
  11. I have a set of 16's for a reasonable price if interested. Could include two part worn winter tyres too. PM if you want more info.
  12. I priced them at Costco this year and they were something like £165 each. Think I'll try for a set of Nokians. I also have a pair of part worn Bridgestone Blizzaks in 205 50 16 size (on Subaru alloys) if anyone is interested.
  13. Yes it could be a duff gauge, but it does seem to work at least to some extent, in that the temp displayed increased in circumstances you would expect it to increase in. As said, warm the car up and then let it idle for 10 mins or so, the gauge should increase again and then the fan should kick in before it gets too near the red. Of course it could be a conection to the fan* or the sender to the fan rather than the fan motor being faulty. In all the cars and stuff I've had over the years I've never had a rad fan pack in. (that I'm aware of! ) * have you had any work done in the engine bay recently, maybe the fan was unplugged for a reason?
  14. Honda Mugen; Track biased car, I believe, so wouldn't recommend it for general use and traveling to work etc. Focus RS; know a couple of people who have/had them. A bit of a 'chav' image and becoming increasingly popular. Of the two people I know that had them one still has his, the other sold it within a few months. Golf/Audi; are they not the same thing in different bodies? Add a Sciroco to the list for the full set. Evo; I'd probably opt for a Scooby instead. What about a Renault Megane R26 etc? Or, do you need much luggae space and 4 seat? If not what about a Lotus, Elise or Exige? Elise would be more live-able with day to day?? When you say high mileage, how many miles are you talking about?
  15. Sounds like my journey earlier this week, kept catching an Audi A6 (Tdi Quatro) through the bends, he'd pull away a bit on straights or uphill, same with a BMW 525i. I was in an Escort non-turbo diesel van! In the van you need momentum to get up hills and there is no torque to overtake easily, so it's all about smooth driving and keeping up momentum, good fun, but can be frustrating with slower vehicles through bends that pull away, even a wee bit on straights.
