Just Another Day Of Subaru Ownership

Is it just me tha gets tis all the time?

I was heading through from Glasgow to Edinburgh early yesterday morning to get my car mot'd. As the car was being laid up for a couple of months I'd left it with no fuel in it so I filled up ( v power only ), switched to the low power map and and off I went. Haven't used it in ages and decided a gentle 60 - 70 mph run would be best and allow me to watch the gauges.

I pulled onto the motorway and within 100 yards I have a fiesta zetec s right up my bunghole. He pulled out fast and came along side, matched my speaad and gave me the look. 3 seconds latet he was a spec in the mirror and I settled down for the rest of my journey.

Hadn't got much further and I was aware of something much bigger and much faster coming up behind me. It had its xenons on so was difficult to make out what it was until it too pulled up next to me and matched my speed. It was a 2010 RS6 and this guy meant business. Serious eye contact, blipping the throttle and driving in what sounded like 3rd gear.. Damm, why hadn't i put in scottimax and ran full power :tumbleweed: . Never mind. He pulled the pin and was off. I must say for a standard car it was really really fast. Just not as fast as a 11 year old subaru. He must have been thinking "Yes, no turbo lag" as he pulled away, 5 seconds later he was thinking "Damm, no turbos" :) .

It was good natured enough and he sheepishly came past me at 65mph and gave me a wave. I gave him the thumbs up and tried not to grin too much.

Anyway. Just passing Livingstone another car came steaming up behind me. A mkII golf gti. A red one. Looking totally standard. I was actually in the fast lane this time as I was passing some trucks but couldn't speed up due to traffic in front of me. When the guy in front pulled in front of the trucks I put my foot down a bit and had a look in my mirror expecting to see him falling back, He wasn't. Hmmmm.

Couldn't go too fast as there was traffic ahead so slowed down and waited for some more space. He was closing in fast just as the car in front pulled over so was obviously thinking the same thing. Again I put my foot down but while I was pulling away from him it wasn't as fast as I thought I should be. Did this several more times and was starting to think the car wasn't running as strong as it should be but 1.96 bar on the AVCR said otherwise. He pulled up next to me when we stopped at the bypass roundabout, and managed to talk to him for 30 seconds. Turns out its running 350 hp with a turbo vr6!!!. No outward signs that it been tuned at all.

So if your in the Livi Endiburgh area watch out because as I said to the guy, that thing is fooking fast.

Did you explain to him that although you had beaten him you would have beaten him by more if it was on the proper map?

I once couldn't get away from what looked like a standard 1.4 civic (that's what the badge said!) that was admittedly sitting on some nice wheels and had a nice stance. Turned out it was a turbo'd 1.6 with no interior.

I did mention it had more in it but always sounds like a cop out when you say that.

They weren't laughing at my efforts BTW just at the daftness of what we were doing. Much more enjoyable when it's all good natured.

my mate had a nova flair years ago with 2.0 and the looks you would get off people was amazing. never under estimate a street sleeper. does other people think because we have subarus we all want to race?

I'm quite easy to provoke if I'm honest.

The fact that I'm normally in my daily driver and HAVE to let things go mean if you come accross me in the subaru I'm far more likely to take he bait.

When I got where I was going I mentioned the road was full of nutters and was told about the modified show. Probably explains it.

Had similar experience on the way back from alford the other week.. Silver Corsa full of sub 20 y/o's (by the look of it) pull along side at 60mph on single carrage way, looking over with grins on their faces wanting a race.. WTF!! What they clearly didn't realise was the truck coming the other way!! As I slammed the brakes on only for them to "just notice" why I did that and they darted into the correct side of the road with not much room to spare. No wonder there are young drivers getting killed on them if they are playing that sort to games!!!

P.s. I was in the Ka!! :tumbleweed:

Just wanted to point out that despite the good naturedness in the origonal post there are complete and utter ar$3h0les out there using the same tarmac as the rest of us... :)

Good work mate!! Long as you're the winner it's not stupid.....

The only ones that used to actually annoy me were the ones that were clearly no competition, usually due to sitting an inch off my back bumper after every time I cooked them and then backed off. Pointless..

Of course these days I watch and laugh at such shenanigans from my rightful place in the the left hand lanes!! Not for long though.....

not had anything since the engines been fixed, but before it did get fixed, was behind a silver rx8 heading from sheriff hall to the gyle, was up along side it , and it kept throtling up to pull away by a few feet then take foot off gas again so id cach up though i was about two car lengths behind it and kept a steady pace, wasnt until he pulled into left lane to le me nearly pass and then cut me up that i started to get a heavier right foot, he tried pulling away and i stayed with him then he pulled into the left lane again and i over took him at which point he started to slow down ,

other than that nothing since the fixed engine , though i am heading down to eyemouth next wedensday so might have a few bites then ,

I don't mind a bit of good-natured banter, but I don't like anybody getting too close to me on any quarter, for any reason. Had a white classic tailgate me up a slip lane recently and then tear past within about three inches of the driver's side before the one-lane slip even joined the motorway. I might've been impressed if he hadn't driven like such a dork...

On one of the better-natured occasions I had a black newage STI follow me down a twisty B-road. He kept a safe distance but we were both clearly putting in a bit of effort to keep the pace up. However, we had to call it a day after about three miles when we caught up with a fire engine that was sporting flashing lights and a wailing siren :tumbleweed: (no laws were broken, officer!).

I honestly didn't buy the Scooby for competitive driving - the best times I have with it are on an empty A/B road. But I'm only human and, in a competitive sense, I actually find it's actually much more satisfying to pull away from drivers of more powerful cars on bendy roads when I'm in my wee 1.5 runabout - in that case it's more a measure of experience than the boost pressure of one's turbocharger :)

yeah have to agree, loved doing that to bmw drivers and so forth or the tighter bends in my 1.2 modded corsa, it only ran with about 120bhp couldnt tell it was a wee nipper from the outside, just a wee roof spoiler front splitter and a spilt oval exhaust on the back other than that looked prety normal, but boy i could go round the coners , see the bigger cars catching up with me on the straights but when it came to a corner sit out wide and cut to the inside of the bend without breaking and looking in the mirror and seeing the thing that was previously an inch off my bumper appplying the breaks bricking it and falling behind, just when it came to the tsraights if they i didnt have a big enough lead coming out of the corners , theyd catch up and over take , but id always be smilling that what they paid 3 or 4 times the pricefor their car jus got ripped apart in the bends by my wee car :(

Many years ago when I was in my late teens early 20's I owned a seriously tuned mini which I had just had properly set up with help from none other than David Vizard. (The Andy Forrest of Minis)

A Skoda pulled up next to me at the lights on Princes Street and I looked over and was delighted to see the other driver was up for it. I Should have taken note of the full Roll cage and the Decals the car was wearing.

I had just gripped second gear as the Skoda was disappearing round the corner at Carlton Hill!!!

Turned out to be a fully prepared Gp A Rally car!!!

If that happened I'm sure he'd give up taking on Subaru's all together.

Wilky - heard you had a mini. We weren't talking about cars at the time though.

No turbos? The current RS6s is a 580bhp V10 Twin Turbo. 0-125mph in 12.7 seconds.

Is it? Thought it was the V8 out of the RS4.

Like I said it was fast and from my point of view had no lag to speak of.

Might it have been an S6? The S6 was a naturally-aspirated V8 until 2006, after which they switched to the V10. Needless to say, still a very quick car!

You'd know if it was an RS6 - I had one runt past me once and the turbos were loud... even above the menacing growl of the V8 (this was one of the older models).

Seriously quick car in a straight line, if that's your thing (and they say the newer ones can take corners too!) :tumbleweed:
