scouk Posted March 20, 2010 Posted March 20, 2010 has anyone tried the toyo r888 on a road car ? I know someone local (non scooby) that ran them all last summer with good effect! although at the end of summer on the first cold wet day he wrote the car off by goign straight on at a corner!
steveairdrie Posted March 20, 2010 Posted March 20, 2010 needing some new tyres to Has anyone used VREDESTEIN ULTRAC CENTO. They seem to be getting some good reviews online and camskill are doing them for a good price. Steve
Robertio Posted March 20, 2010 Posted March 20, 2010 has anyone tried the toyo r888 on a road car ? I ran them on my RX-7 all year round. Brilliant in the dry, when damp they are fine when no standing water. In standing water they are terrible - point steering wheel in a straight line and hold on. In snow/ice they are horrific - sideways at 5mph on a frosty roundabout that you wouldn't think twice about on normal tyres and in an inch of snow it took me many minutes to get up the hill heading south out of Inverness, using all of both lanes to keep the car moving. If you have a powerful car that only goes out on dry days they are great, otherwise I'd be inclined to go with somewhat more tread. Normal tyres would light up at 65mph in 3rd gear, with R888s it would chirp through 2nd and 3rd was all grip in the dry, though I did have it start to spin the tyres at 140 in 4th in the damp (a touch concerning ).
andrew_forrest Posted March 23, 2010 Posted March 23, 2010 has anyone tried the toyo r888 on a road car ? My new 888's came with a warning not to store or use then below 0 deg C as the compound may crack and damage the tyre ! I had used them on the Spec c all winter before I read that ! Andy
hi_jac Posted March 23, 2010 Posted March 23, 2010 Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 winter and summer and R888 for balls out runs damp or dry
scoobywho Posted March 25, 2010 Posted March 25, 2010 Interesting info here!!Any Vredstein or Uniroyal users????? My 2p worth First off - non scoob! F1's - I made the mistake of fitting a full set of these on my IS250 Lexus. They were awful on this car! We had Dunlop Maxx before, and they were lovely. I presumed that the F1's would be great.... hated them so much, that the car was sold lol! Never again will i run with F1's! I had RE010's on my Integra - fantastic and very stiff! Pzeros on my Jag - lovely but very soft! Conti's on my Audi/Golf - again lovely and decent wear Michelins on my Boxster - no problem at all, maybe the tyre was too hard and didn't grip on the limits imo The Scoob - had S03's when i bought it - they were fine, no problems. Replaced these with a set of OEM RE050 Bridgstones - imo great tyres but not cheap. running 34psi front and 33psi rear. I like the sidewalls as stiff as possible - these are ok. I had a problem/emergency last year and had to have one of these replaced with a Kuhmo!!! Not a bad tyre in the dry, but in the wet I can tell it's not up to the job! Also - i feel that this corner of the car is softer.... i would not recommend a set. Cheap though they are!! Currently looking into a refurb for my prodrive rims and a full set of tyres - my short list is - all comments welcome. I want a stiff sidewall if possible as i do like to lean on them!! size 215/45 Z R17's Bridgestone RE050 - £98 Vredstein Ultro - £76 Dunlop sport Maxx - £86 Give me a shout over at auto Image 0141 333 0575 and i will get a refurb and tyre price
thefastone Posted March 26, 2010 Posted March 26, 2010 (edited) I think that tyres are very much horses for courses... John Mentioned liking Miclelans, and I've run on them before, hated them. Matty meniotned liking RE050s and I hated them too... Toyos were... ok... I wasn't amazed by them, but I dont think that they were a bad tyre... But I'm all for The Eagle F1s I've just swapped from GSD3s onto Assymetrics, and generally the D3s need to be scrubbed in for a 100 or so miles but once they are scrubbed in they are great! I assum the Assys are the same, although I only got them on the other day, and ive not had a chance to test them yet... Edit to add, that sometimes, what works for one car, wont work for another.... I've used all these on my 2 imprezas so theres not been too much difference in conditions... Edited March 26, 2010 by thefastone

Let me know how you get on with the assymetrics im thinking about getting them very soon Got the GSD3's on just now and never had any problems with them although there are on the limit now but i have had them on for just over 20K miles which is good
scoobywho Posted March 27, 2010 Posted March 27, 2010 I spoke to a guy from prodrive today and he said that the best tyre to get fitted onto any of the test scoobs was the continental sport contacts, I say anyone who has a big wad of cash can afford them on a scoob, they are way to expensive
marko72 Posted March 27, 2010 Author Posted March 27, 2010 Im glad my tyre question is providing much interest and debate lol
StewartyBoy Posted March 27, 2010 Posted March 27, 2010 Make it to The Arches Mark? Heard it was'nt that busy. Come on, what wheels have you got??
Phil MC Posted March 27, 2010 Posted March 27, 2010 So gents - is there a way/code or something to determine how stiff sidewallls can be? There is a two number code after the size which tells you. The higher the number the stiffer the sidewall. e.g. 225/45R17 93Y
marko72 Posted March 27, 2010 Author Posted March 27, 2010 Make it to The Arches Mark? Heard it was'nt that busy. Come on, what wheels have you got?? I didnt make it, but was still up back of 4 with the leg. Turned out my snapping partner could make it so think he went and done it so all good hopefully. I have new 18s tarmacs on my car in gunmetal and very happy with them, tyre choice inbetween choice and happy with that. Took it round to Hypertech last sat to show Dunc + Alex and they liked them on the car. Gonna go out for a wee drive right now in fact Funny though, since sat I think ive seen about 3 cars with the same alloys as mine, 2 were imprezas! Weird how you start seeing what you have as soon as you get it, car wise. Should be cool for tmw.
john_mchutchison Posted March 27, 2010 Posted March 27, 2010 here's my 2 bobs worth. since owning my scoobs ive had 4 sets of tyres, 1st were pirelli proxis, good tyres for general use, poor when pushed round Kh after a few laps seemed to let go too easy, 2nd toyos, very very good in wet, wee bit noisy in the dry when pushed round corners, were good round KH with little to zero degen and very consistent, 3rd set, Falken's, for the price i was very pleased with these tyres, good all round grip in dry and wet, poor in snow but what do you expect from a v grooved tyre, poor wear, 4th set, F1 assymetrics, only had a few weeks but so far feel really spongy going round long corners, find myself have to correct oversteer, adjusted pressure to 34 all round, still same. seem to have good grip on all surfaces but will know better next week. also have to say these tyres are 235/40/18 so they are 10mil wider than standard, dunno if this has anything to do with it. john
