BJM Posted December 3, 2009 Posted December 3, 2009 This is not a review or even to give you my thoughts on their perfomance. Some will know I fitted EBC Red Ceramic pads all round, along with turbo grooved front discs. Why not the rear disc I hear you thinking?. The rears are in the catalogue but 'not available yet. Also did MOTUL RBF600 fluid and stainless lines. Anyway fitted them about 2 weeks ago and they have been driving me mental !!!! The bl**dy noise of the things. SQUEEEEEEELLLLLLL! This only happens when i touch the brake gently i.e in the middle of town when theres 9 million peeps about going "oh nice shiny white car" then "WTF, listen to that, thats knackered" Before anyone asked I bedded them in the recommended way (theres a whole lots of ways recommended by different people). Oh then a couple od days later, I done it again. EBC says " this should go away in about 1000 to 1500 miles" 1500 miles sounding like a bus/train/squeely thing all in one. I don't think so sonny jim Tonight , the wifes at work, and I decided I had had enough. I have just been out and absolutly pounded the living organic resin out of them. Stopped let them cool for 15 mins, Then gave it some more. Done this a few times (was out for about 1hr30mins). One last shot of the way home I mabey over done it a bit and lost my brake pedal. Hmmm love the smell of cooked brakes in the morning. So I'm home now. If they squeak on the way to work tomorrow. You just might see me on the hard shoulder of the M8, wheels off, and throwing disc and pads about in a big tantrum. Rant over. Thanks If they stay on I give you a review in due course.
TrackScotland Posted December 3, 2009 Posted December 3, 2009 (edited) its something i think you have to put up with if you have aggressive pads... My old DS3000's were fun. They only squeeled when cold. They stopped when they hot. No squeeling with DS2500's, XP8's or XP10's so far. Have you tried any copper slip on the backing plates? Are the pads a good fit, and tightly secured with the locking wire/bolts? (dont know which calipers you have) Edited December 3, 2009 by TrackScotland

I fully understand that there is no perfect pad, i.e performance in the cold /hot, brake dust , wear , noise. But i thought I'd try the EBCs, but so noisy. The bite fine when cold BTW. I had an Elise a couple of years ago and you had to throw out an anchor to stop when they were cold, so scary. Edited December 3, 2009 by BJM
johns Posted December 4, 2009 Posted December 4, 2009 I never had any noise problems with the EBC red stuff ceramic pads, but the pedal response wasn't that great either cold or hot. My biggest issue with them was they only lasted 6,000 miles of normal commuting use (no motorways) before they were almost down to the metal and needed to be replaced I now have XP8s fitted, and the performance is good, cold or hot, but they squeal loudly when warm under light braking pressure and produce an unbelievable amount of brake dust. Wheels go from clean to jet black in under a week (250 miles), and the brake dust is of the type that is very difficult to remove easily (sponge and soapy water isn't enough). Pads are generally a compromise between performance, longivity, cheapness, noise and dust production. You can generally satisfy 3 or 4 of these attributes. John
st3ph3n Posted December 4, 2009 Posted December 4, 2009 For me the EBC pads have always worked fine on the WRX and lasted for ages on standard discs. What didn't work was their discs. They warped and cracked and generally were absolutely rotten.
johnnyr6 Posted December 4, 2009 Posted December 4, 2009 I personally found the redstuff pads to be pretty crap. Not the best feel and lasted 5 mions. The yellow stuff on the other hand were sooo much better. I would not put redstuff in an sti again. Johnny
colin_ross Posted December 4, 2009 Posted December 4, 2009 "oh nice shiny white car" then "WTF, listen to that, thats knackered" If you feel that way don't fit a twin plate clutch or a straightcut gea***t. DS2500's are pretty quite but they don't half give off a lot of dust, even when just pottering about.

Cant say the same thing about the discs they where obviously made of chocolate
BalliSTIc Posted December 6, 2009 Posted December 6, 2009 Like you mate, I found the stock 08 STi pads lasted about 5 minutes... well, OK 5K miles but not much in it! Afetr much umming and awing went for EBC yellows. Gd pads, but a bit hard on standard discs... a bit fadey on a long hard run and crunch a little when cold. Might upgrade the discs when dosh allows... no complaints on the yellows themselves though. Will watch this thread with interest.
Spaceman Posted December 6, 2009 Posted December 6, 2009 used a few sets on the wrx when i had it and they only lasted around 5k miles a set but never any squealling get them out and really smother the pad backings with copperslip the squealling is usually vibrations amplified so a load of copperslip dampens the vibrations and so gets rid of the squeal
scoobyterzo3 Posted December 7, 2009 Posted December 7, 2009 run them on the standard 4 pots and there not very good either hot or cold, think they maybe get glazed easily, also had green pads on rs and they squealed and were pretty crap, heard good things about yellow but never used them....
